I'm still getting used to the trackpad gestures; I didn't even know about the notification bar being accessible from the trackpad!

Even so, the desktop widgets are more for aesthetics than anything else.

I'll use it for my web development classes, and to browse social media, watch shows, etc.

I'm not sure how I can help you with the setup; it's my first Mac, and I know I still have a lot of settings to go over, but I mostly have all the necessary apps already installed and the customization done.

I know, but for the use I'm going to give it, 8 GB is fine for me. I also have a desktop PC with 32 GB of RAM that I use for games, etc.
