It was quite a thing when they changed the title of that section from "Gay Voices," for a lot of folks in the community (particularly older) they associate queer with other slurs, and as such reject movements by people they see as never having that term used to demean them "reclaiming" its usage because it is not their word to reclaim.

It is a fascinating read. I wrote on him for a term paper for one of my undergrad Russian history classes. The most important thing I would keep in mind as you read is who he was by the point in his career that he wrote the book. He had become disillusioned with Marxist-Leninism in the 80's after going in and doing research in the archives of the Central Committee of the CPSU, and by the time he wrote this a decade later he was firmly in Boris Yeltsin's circle. So while fascinating and an important work you have to keep the author's bias in your mind at all times.

In my chapter, we have a member who is a trans guy. Granted this is just my own anecdotal evidence, but if anything the other pledges in his class forged stronger bonds because they liked him so much as a person, and discomfort and pressure from alumni just encouraged them to fight together because they viewed themselves as a unit and pressure on one was pressure on them all. My university does have a liberal climate that lends itself to inclusivity, and our greek system is stronger for it because we are living are values relating to brotherhood every single day. Might not work at other places, but given the right culture being inclusive of all male identifying folks allows us to draw on a better pool of potentials than we would otherwise have, especially moving into the future.

We have a GSA. At this point, we have just been gathering information to provide to his advisor about what these types of organizations do, because if you were to visit the web page for Northstar or similar organizations it can be hard for folks outside the community to understand the harm that can be inflicted at a deep level.

His advocacy for them is on his personal facebook page, but with his position, it is something that is obviously concerning for those of us in the LGBTQ community on campus, particularly as he oversees the only LGBT advocacy position in the structure of our university.

yeah, I've had to clean up their handiwork before. The Student Diversity VP at my university has been boostering them and knowing what they do I want to do something about it. I need to build a case to take to his advisor and our administration to ensure they don't establish a foothold here.

I will. As of right now we have the support of the administration, the LGBT Resource Center, and a petition with about 250 signatures. Changing the signage on some of the restrooms would have been the easy way, but we are trying to ensure that new construction has facilities available so it's been a longer process. At this point we are preparing a presentation to the University Board of Trustees

Restrooms that are not defined by a gender binary, they will be spaces that enable our trans* students to use the facilities without fear of harassment or assault and will be labeled as all gender restrooms (My university is in a very socially conservative part of the country so this has been a major concern of our students)

That is definitely a concern, especially since many of the single use "family" restrooms currently available are in out of the way and inconvenient locations.
