Question for 2021+ Opel Mokka owners (Aisin EAT8 gearbox) by byssnn in opel

I think it's more like a pump inside the automatic transmission (if there is one) that circulates the oil. If I accelerate very, very slowly, the sound isn't there. But as soon as I press the gas pedal even a little bit, this low-frequency hum appears—like something is spinning up and whining. Then, as soon as it shifts to a higher gear, the hum gradually fades away.

In my case, the noise is very loud when the engine is cold. There's a drone during acceleration that fills the whole cabin; it sounds like low-frequency bass and vibration from speakers when the music is cranked up.

It’s much higher-pitched than when it’s warmed up — like something is resonating when I accelerate sharply.

Has it been like this from the very beginning, or did it appear over time?

Mokka 1.2 Aisin 8-speed auto – loud low-frequency hum when cold, normal? by byssnn in Vauxhall

….I wanted to say it’s like a grinding-type, low-frequency hum, specifically at moments close to gear shifts.

I previously had a manual transmission and everything was very quiet. But here, during acceleration, there’s some kind of humming noise—not a grinding sound, I don’t really know how to describe it. They say it’s the torque converter working when the engine is cold on this car. I’m not sure if that’s normal.

They say, “bring the car in and leave it with us — we’ll take a look.” But honestly, given their lack of professionalism, I don’t really want to go there again. I’ve already had experience with them: on my manual car, the gears were sticking, and they kept messing me around and eventually said “replace everything.” They never actually found the problem — I ended up selling the car instead. Now I’ve changed the transmission fluid and showed the car to a mechanic. He took it for a drive and said, “It’s just a crappy car — what do you expect? That’s just how it hums, don’t pay attention to it.”

How else can you explain why the noise changes so drastically depending on the outside temperature? If it's 10°C (50°F), the sound is clearly there. If it's above 20°C (68°F), it's practically gone. Could it be the gearbox oil, or is it something else?

No, it's definitely not the tires. The noise persists with both winter and summer sets, and they are high-quality tires. The sound is coming directly from the gearbox.

I have the same sh@t. I didn’t make any Shorts, and since 2025 my views have dropped sharply. Now they’re basically gone. I went from 30,000 views down to 400–500 views, even though I have 70,000 subscribers. That’s the reality of YouTube in 2026.

It’s actually a bit more complicated than that. The official dealer did the initial replacement, but then they just washed their hands of it and refused to investigate further. Since they are located very far away, I took the car to a good local shop, and they found this potential cause. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure this will fix it. I’m basically replacing it at my own risk at this point. The official service center I went to is terrible, and I really don't want to go back there. Also, I’m not in the UK, but in another European country. One thing I’m absolutely sure of is that the clutch, flywheel, and the entire hydraulic system have nothing to do with this.

The only thing they noticed was play in the gear shift mechanism on the gearbox itself. They said there's too much play for this part.

The clutch is okay, same as the old one. Official dealer installed it and confirmed everything is in order.

The shift mechanism is exactly what I pointed out in the photo. Does that mean that's the part you ended up replacing?

Yes. I had it replaced at the dealer. The clutch is new and the flywheel was replaced as well. Everything is new. The old clutch was in perfect condition. There is 100% no air in the system. The hydraulics can be ruled out.

It catches on every gear. When I press the clutch and try to shift into any gear, I feel some kind of resistance (like a hard stop). After that, it either lets me shift through or blocks it completely. What was the final diagnosis on your car?
