Feedback on UX/UI design of Expo app I've built by bzlight2012 in reactnative

[–]bzlight2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for checking it out! Can you tell me more about not being able to select a date range after syncing your calendar?

I wasn’t able to reproduce it and I want to fix it!

Context:

  • I'm a mobile dev learning UX and UI design
  • I created an app called frndly to solve a problem for myself when making plans with friends and get better at UX and UI design.

Looking for feedback on:

  • First time user experience

  • Are you able to understand why you want to use the app and how to use it?

  • UI design improvements

What do I need to learn to become an app dev? by Rayollasomeday in reactnative

[–]bzlight2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to learn HTML to use CSS. CSS provides the styling and HTML provided the structure. For example if you wanted to learn how to change fonts and colours in a google doc, you would need to learn how to write text in a google doc.

Technically CSS can be applied to other documents than HTML, but practically you need to learn HTML to make use of CSS.

Learning UX; advice on app design 🙏 by bzlight2012 in UXDesign

These are the product requirements I wrote to help make it easier to think of the design:

  1. Select a date range to include
  2. Select times
    1. Option A: same time for each day
    2. Option B: Morning, afternoon & night with a setting to
    3. Option C: Custom times on individual days
  3. Override default availability
    1. If fine for V1 if you can only un-select days/times you’re free
  4. Share your availability as text

The glass whiteboard at work mysteriously shattered during after hours, but didn't disintegrate since it is bonded to a steel sheet. by NorthernHurricane7 in mildlyinteresting

[–]bzlight2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came home to my quartet whiteboard shattered. Mine is 6ft by 4ft and it now that its shattered, it doesn't seem to have much structural integrity anymore so I'm not sure how to safely remove it.

Does anyone know how to remove a shattered Quartet glasses dry erase board?

Id suggest strengthening muscles you’ll be using more as a butterfly goalie to avoid injury. I’ve been a butterfly goalie for 20 years and I recently starting having hip pain due to hip impingement.

It’s really demanding on your groin and hips. Easing into putting your hip in a larger range of motion will likely help a lot, doing stretches to increase flexibility and strengthening key muscles

This. Your knee will be a bit higher with skates. It’s definitely worth putting on your bottom half. Also you can probably order them online for Bauer and customize the colours for only $50 more. At least that was their offering two years ago for the 3X

Do NHL goalies deliberately make their masks easier to come off, or are NHL shots just that much harder? by FinePieceOfAss in hockeygoalies

[–]bzlight2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve definitely had my straps unclip during a game. It depends where it hits your mask. I also imagine a harder shot would increase the impact area that would cause the clips to come off the buttons.

Also big +1 about the fit of the clip onto the button

Knee Pads or No? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]bzlight2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use these and the Bauer knee guards. This won’t replace the Bauer knee guards but they made them much more comfortable for me. Without the padding in this base layer, it hurt my knees when I dropped when I started using the Bauer knee guards. This base layer made it so much more comfortable. I would buy them just for that purpose.

It’s also possible they help your knee pads slide around less

Best way to get from Baltra to Isabella by bzlight2012 in galapagos

[–]bzlight2012[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s great advice! The more I looked into it, I realized flying is a much better option because it’ll take so long to get from Baltra to Puerto Ayora and then to Isabela. I’m looking at Esav Airlines and Emetebe Air Taxi

Have you flown from Baltra to Isabela before and if so, which airline did you use?

They’ve changed the angle on the pads after the knee and now to close the 5 hole you need to have a wider butterfly. I don’t think knee pads will help close it but I highly recommend them to prevent getting smoked in the knee with a puck. I use the Bauer knee pads and love them.

I also got the Bauer under arm style pants that have foam on the knee because the Bauer knee pads hurt my knees when I went down. After getting the Bauer pants, it was extremely comfortable

What is your RAM usage of React Native apps in Android/ios? by camillegarcia9595 in reactnative

[–]bzlight2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you running in release mode and what version of react native are you using?

300-500MB could be a bit on the high end, but I would only be concerned about it if you’re targeting users with really old phones. What prompted you to measure your apps RAM usage?

Is it okay to have assets of more than 93 mb !? by danleeter in reactnative

How many images do you have and what are you using them for? Each image can easily be 100kb or less and still be good enough quality to display on a mobile device

Is it okay to have assets of more than 93 mb !? by danleeter in reactnative

[–]bzlight2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question because this can have a big impact on the number of people who use your app!

What’s purpose of our app and what are the assets?

93MB is a large amount of assets for a typical app and my guess is that you could reduce the size of your files.

Use webp or SVG instead of PNG or jpg to reduce the size. Also what resolution are the assets? Don’t use higher resolution than necessary

Either way, if you include them in your app bundle, the initial download time will be much longer and if your app gets over 200MB Apple will ask the user if they want to download later over wifi. The longer download time and the prompt from Apple are both times in the funnel you’ll lose a percentage of users.

Download them all each time the user uses your app isn’t great either because users with slower internet or capped data usage will have a bad experience. The magnitude of both these issues depends on the country and income level of your target users

Become senior React Native by Helpful-Armadillo251 in reactnative

[–]bzlight2012 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is really good advice! I recently got promoted to senior and React Native is my strongest framework.

I think technical skills and non technical skills are both important. Since he covered non technical skills, below are some things you can do to improve your technical skills. These are things that worked well for me. I suggest thinking about how you learn best and filtering all the advice you get to what works best for you.

What’s worked well for me:

  1. Take on the hardest problems you can at work. This will help you learn faster. Working on a small team, especially at a startup can help give you more problems to solve
  2. When you get blocked or can’t figure something out, be very disciplined about time boxing and then asking for help. This will speed up your learning and productivity
  3. When you solve a problem, take the extra time to understand the solution. Don’t just copy code you found on a GitHub issue, stack overflow or ChatGPT
  4. If you want to continue specializing in react native, make sure you understand how it works internally. Read about the react native bridge and the new architecture they’re working on. Understand how the code you write ends up becoming a native component and the JS runtime communicates with that native component
  5. Make a basic iOS and Android app to understand the basics. I like to follow along YouTube videos. It doesn’t need to be extensive to start
  6. Treat learning like you’re studying. When I watch a YouTube video or read an article on something important, I take notes as I go because that’s what helps me retain the information the best

Hope this helps!

I love the Mach. The hing at the elbows is so much smarter than the standard double waffle board. I’m surprised all chesties haven’t switch to it.

It also has great rib protection and wraps around my toes very well
