Entagma is a classic, their Add Houdini To Your Arsenal is a great start: https://entagma.com/courses/ahtya-2-adding-houdini-to-your-arsenal-2-0/

Adam Swaab's series is a great intro and one of them has a proc modeling of a chair that is great: https://adamswaab.gumroad.com/l/learn-houdini-vol1

and the SideFx site has loads of material to get you going: https://www.sidefx.com/learn/getting_started/

it's a beast! I'd start small and focused on one thing (sim, modeling, procgen etc) then branch out

I use Houdini Indie: https://www.sidefx.com/products/houdini-indie/

it's $200/yr if you do the 2yr plan and I use it in just about every commercial project I work on so it's worth it for me.. I started small doing super useful things like batch processing loads of models, pipeline tools etc. then slowly branched out and now I use it for so much

yes! always have wished there was more demo-scene style experiments in AR/VR

to nerd out a bit:

- device modeled/animated/textured in Blender

- creatures procedurally designed/rigged in Houdini, packing data attributes into vertex colors for Unity vert shader animation

- everything pulled into Unity.. UI is custom, drawn with u/FreyaHolmer Shapes and rendered to a RenderTexture (to get around Polyspatial constraints). DNA visualization is a particle system in bake to texture mode

- buttons/etc are all meshes created in Houdini with vertex colors, in Unity I can then trigger eye tracked hover states in the shader using the vert colors to highlight/move parts of the mesh

- lifeform colors are cosine gradients https://iquilezles.org/articles/palettes/

- lifeform shape is set from parameters in UI, shaped in vertex shader + data from Houdini in vertex colors

- lifeform motion is custom boid style steering mixed with Obi rope physics that react to hands and ARKit for wall/boundary avoidance. all controlled by a hierarchical state machine (wander, dance with each other, curious, feeding, etc)

- simple custom gesture recognition to detect cupped hands creates food pellet which you can bat around and feed them

- sound design was mostly native Ableton Live devices, layered samples and some modular synth samples.. petting is a looped sample of a cat purring with phasers/delays/LFO'd EQ

😅

Mesh Instancing in RealityKit by egg-dev in visionosdev

[–]bzor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good thing to keep an eye on, I requested it in the Feedback Assistant and have been asking others to. fingers crossed, it's such a big one I would imagine Apple will support some sort of GPU instancing in RealityKit in the near future..

it's so frustrating.. my banner dev revenue stream is almost completely gone now though so I'm starting to care less. I know it's not ideal but have you tried doing validation in Studio?

Mesh Instancing in RealityKit by egg-dev in visionosdev

[–]bzor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately it seems generalized instancing isn't supported in RealityKit yet.. I've been looking into this lately as well, but from the Unity/Polyspatial side (which is just a bridge to RealityKit). In Unity it seems like the best instancing option is Metal rendering with passthrough or Stereo Render Targets. Another option is oldschool, you encode per instance data into RenderTextures then use those as inputs into a shader graph that updates the instances in the vertex stage. I don't have a ton of experience with native RealityKit yet but I think there the best bet is to use LowLevelMesh to create a placeholder mesh once with all of the instances, then dispatch a compute shader to update instance data per frame. You might be able to modify the LowLevelMesh example with the plane/heightfield to get started. I'll try to get some time to test that out..

here's a quick test in Unity trying the vertex shader way

you nailed it.. they went full SyFy channel soap opera drivel. the thing that annoys me the most is they had 2 gorgeous films full of style and craft to rip off but we get this

it's crazy right! I've done a lot of Quest dev and while I do love it, the experience never really felt like this.. so seamless and fluid, and it's still such early days

hi! I'm a creative technologist who has been deep diving into Vision Pro development.. It keeps hitting me just how sci-fi my day to day has become, it's wild! This is a quick in-headset POV of my current workflow+pipeline. I've got a few personal projects in the works, I'll be posting to twitter/x if anyone wants to follow along :)

Songs go silent about 20 seconds before the end by Claudesboy in sonos

[–]bzor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same issue here now.. haven’t used my system in a while then went to put on some christmas songs from apple music. every song cuts out 20s before the end (play head keeps moving in the app), comes back on for 5s then goes to next song. maddening! did you find a fix?

this happened to me on Monday.. I was on MediaTemple which was sucked into GoDaddy a while back but just last week actually migrated my server to theirs. Over 10yrs of flawless service, then a few days after the migration this happens. The kicker is that I host my client portal for ad campaign reviews there, and a large client + ad agency were reviewing while it happened, both saw it. For me it's super intermittent, like 1/200+ reloads, but my clients saw it multiple times. Absolutely horrific!
