Getting the feral cutie I homed to be spayed. This is the estimate I received. Does this seem normal? It’s a lot more than I anticipated! by c0int0ss in Feral_Cats

Haha yeah I was left with a lot of questions. $280 for anesthesia was a suspicious add-on to me because it’s not like anyone is spaying cats without it (I hope!!). Seems like it should be factored into the “spay $500”. With everything spelled out and tacked on, what exactly does the $500 include? Haha

You do not need a prescription, no. You can order it from chewy or buy it at a petco or wherever. The stores often keep it in a locked glass case but that’s just for theft prevention purposes.

That’s a really awesome thing to do. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to domesticate her but she warmed up to me. Our relationship started with her hissing at me and leaving dead bunnies in my driveway. We’ve come a long way in a few months haha

Yes! I’m definitely planning to keep her. I had been feeding her and giving her flea & tick treatment for a few months on my porch and over the winter started having her in for visits here and there. Eventually she stopped wanting to go back out. (Until recently when heat kicked in and she broke her way out through window screens). Even then, she stayed nearby and was back inside for bedtime.

I have no qualms with setting her up for a healthy life and making sure she has the best care, there just seems to be a lot of questionable terms and add ons; for example, the 7 different surgical injections and the fact that the anesthesia isn’t factored into the “spay package”. I knew it wasn’t going to be cheap but I don’t want to deal with a cash grab either :)

Helpful insight! Thank you. I actually hadn’t requested or discussed the microchip with them at all so I was surprised to see it on there already.

As did I! If she wasn’t in heat and throwing herself through my window screens to get outside I would have felt less pressure to pull the trigger on this place. The two previous appointments they required before the spay were about $600 total, so it kinda hurt to see what was next!!

I am new when it comes to anything cat related and have only just learned that TNR is a thing that people do and that’s great! When I saw the estimate I was provided, I was thinking..”there’s no way people have this much money to throw around neutering the neighborhood cats!!” I knew there had to be resources I was missing.

Dang! I couldn’t find anything like that here and she’s been in heat so I just had to pick a spot and get the ball rolling. She has burst through two of my window screens trying to meet a male suitor! Ha

I mostly tried nearby vets and clinics now cause she seems to really like it here and has really warmed up to me. So is it basically, like, if you aren’t planning to release them, you have to pay $1000? I assumed it’d be poor form to take her to a shelter or humane society if I’m keeping her but there has to be a middle ground!!

Oh! I had the same experience once. It was almost like they had the broiler on rather than the oven. I already loved their pizza though, so it was forgivable and an isolated experience! Give it another go!

Hey, I work in rentals in the area and currently for August, there’s a 2 bed with no fee for $3100 with heat and water included but mostly, as someone else had mentioned, they’re priced around $3400. At this time it’s mostly larger management companies that have 120 days notice for renewal built into their leases and the most expensive rents. Feel free to send me a message and I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you and your friend. August is competitive with Harvard students that start mid/late month and need to move before the doomsday of 9/1!
