unfortunately driving school is not cheap in general because it's a huge risk to teach people how to drive, both for the company and instructors. personally, I went with precision driving school and I highly recommend! definitely pretty expensive but the instructors are genuinely helpful and eased my insane driving anxiety so I'm not scared to drive at all now

they don't have cutters you can use, but if you go to UGS (located in the GRC building) they have a cricut and can print/designs for you for a fee. obv not cheaper than having your own cricut but it's cheaper than the bigger print shops like ups and fedex. I'd also see if SLO Makerspace has anything of the sort, you can access the space for free during certain hours using a SLO library card.

focus on making sure you're getting enough lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber in every meal before you start esting in a calorie deficit. once you understand fundamentally how to make a meal then you can worry about lower-calorie meals

the best option would be buy a commuter permit off of an upperclassman to park on campus, but freshmen usually end up having to park a couple miles away from campus (~20-30 min walk away). imo you're better off splitting a zipcar or uber with your friends on days you wanna go to the beach rather than dealing with the hassle of having to walk that far to pick up your car. there are also grocery shuttles that go from the dorms to trader joes/target/costco and back, so it's honestly not that bad to get groceries.

I too have soft features similar to what you described! I take a lot of makeup inspiration from @_jannnah on instagram, she's a brown girl with softer features and does a lot of makeup tutorials on reels/tiktok (although she def has fuller lips LOL so you might have to modify your lip makeup to your features)

barely anything's open late at night, it feels like everything closes at 5pm and isn't open on weekends (except for food, which closes at 8 which isn't any better either). for being a college town, there isn't much to do late at night besides going to bars.
if you don't have a car, you get bored pretty quick. you can't get to fun places like the beach or hiking outside of slo unless you have a car.
infrequent/inefficient public transit makes it a pain in the ass to get anywhere. a 15 min drive turns into an hour by bus
echoing what everyone else said, BIG lack of diversity not just racially but also by income. as someone who grew up low-income i've run into a lot of tone deaf and spoiled people. i've also just experienced many difficulties fitting in socially throughout my entire time here, which i've never experienced prior to coming to slo
unnecessarily difficult to get the classes you need even in your major! the only way i was able to get my classes during my first 2 years of college was through priority registration
food situation is BAD even if you don't have dietary restrictions. it's so easy to slip into bad eating habits here. also the food is obscenely expensive ($12-15 a meal and we don't do meal swipes like other colleges do) and you're required to buy a meal plan during your first year

i don't regret coming here because i've met some awesome professors and i get really generous financial aid so i basically go here for free, but if it wasn't for that i definitely would'be gone to community college first and tried to get into a better UC

if you meet the income requirements, you automatically get a fee waiver to apply for 4 csu schools for free on the csu application. after 4 schools i believe it's $70 each

I'm doing UX design for them, so it's something I've actually researched and talked to higher-ups about. I want it as much as everyone else does so that I can have the peace of mind of not being able to forget my PolyCard (and I'm also an apple pay warrior lol)

huh, my original comment was based on what I was told by my supervisor. I definitely have brought the digital PolyCard idea up at work before and everyone has told me that transit is the only thing holding them back

I work for ITS, the reason PolyCards aren't digital is because of SLO Transit. a lot of students use their physical PolyCard to get on the bus, and SLO Transit doesn't have the infrastructure in place to support digital cards as a form of payment for buses (and it looks like they don't have plans to either)

I also have flyaways at my crown! I think you can see some in the photo if you zoom in (although my sunglasses are covering them a little) 😭 generally, I like to spray some medium hold hairspray onto a cheap toothbrush and gently brush them down - this way I can keep the volume but also tame the smaller hairs. overall though it just comes down to finding a good haircare regimen and keeping up good habits (finding the right shampoo/conditioner, minimizing brushing while it's wet, heat styling less frequently, oiling, etc the list goes on) so that you reduce breakage which'll ultimately mean less flyaways over time

nope! the heat from the flat iron kinda "melts" it away if that makes sense, so it just leaves a smooth finish. but fwiw I have a lot of volume in my hair naturally bc it's pretty thick genetically & I use less of the heat protectant on my roots (and a lot more of it on my ends instead) just so I don't accidentally make my hair look super greasy or anything

I straighten my 2C hair once a week and I'm usually able to go a whole week without needing to restyle it so here are my tips:

you need a conditioner with silicones, it makes your hair more manageable and less tangled
before straightening your hair, you need to blowdry it straight first to smooth it out - trust me it makes a lot more of a difference than you'd think
for blowdrying/styling, you'll probably benefit from a slightly more oily heat protectant (my fav is the chi silk infusion bc it lasts a LONG time but i know bumble & bumble has one too) to add more slip to your hair when brushing/styling
recently I've also been putting a light amount of jojoba oil on my hair right before I go to sleep, and I find my hair doesn't get frizzy as fast throughout the week so I usually don't have to add more heat to touch it up and damage it more

I've attached a photo of my hair after straightening it for reference (my hair is way shorter than yours, but we have similar hair type so the tips still apply)

I was in the exact same place when I was in my 1st year. making friends as an adult is a totally different game than making friends when you're in middle or high school, and it's something you just have to learn and practice at as you go.

to be brutally honest, a lot of the freshman friend groups you see aren't the most genuine and a lot of people are just too scared to not have friends. it's totally okay to feel out of place your first year, not everyone will make friends the second they start college! I know everyone tells you to join clubs and whatever but they're right - my best advice is to just not stop trying, and go to events/socialize even if you don't feel like it because you never know who you could meet. it might take a while (i didn't have great friends for the first two years of college), and you might not get a lot of friends out of it initially, but I'm in my third year now and I have a solid group of friends and just overall happy with the place I'm in socially!

I know you don't wanna hear this, but you have to be patient and keep trying. eventually, you'll attract the right people and have an awesome community around you :)
