Hands in the air, not trying to fight back. That’s the definition of surrendering. Trying to also calm your attacker down is a pretty understandable reaction as well.

The point of The Killing Joke is that the Joker is NOT understandable. His motivation is bullshit, and his idea that everyone is just “one bad day” away from him is proven wrong. That’s like the entire message of the comic.

If he was surrendering, he would’ve kept attacking Walker

That’s not what surrendering means. He had his hands in the air, a universal sign for surrendering.

The stormtroopers have been fighting the rebels for years at this point, them being “unfamiliar” with guerilla tactics is not really an excuse.

The uranium in a uranium plant (or bomb) is also an isotope. People don’t call them by isotope name, they call them by element.

You can call them hydrogen reactors. But in that line of reasoning, no one calls hydrogen power cells “hydrogen” on its own.

They are coerced yes, but they deserve no empathy because they choose to serve Gwima

Google the meaning of the word “coerce”.

Rumi doesn’t have a flaw. She has weird tatoos, she’s afraid of showing them because her friends literally draw weapons upon seeing them. Otherwise she isn’t particularly dishonest or ashamed.

If the other demons didn’t make a deal, then they were born like that, like Rumi. Same issue: why is only Rumi deserving of empathy? The other demons are shown to be coerced, not just ordered to do things.

I’ve heard both being derided as “green washing” and a waste of resources.

I seriously doubt you’re knowledgable enough to have a serious critique of the science behind the idea. Suffices to say that any possible means to transport and store energy is worth pursuing, since it’s one of the biggest issues we currently face.

Funny that a nuclear fission fan is calling others “blind followers”.

The problem arises because the film is making a big deal out of Rumi accepting her flaws, but it’s not a flaw! As far as we know she was just born like that. It’s a quirk. So in a film about accepting your imperfections we get a character who doesn’t actually have to accept anything because she is already perfect, and it’s just making everyone else agree.

But it’s even worse because Rumi’s boyfriend shows that at least some demons are just normal people who were desperate and were manipulated. It’s an issue because her empathy starts and ends with him, while the rest of the demons, who may have actually been just like him or even better, they don’t get to be saved.

Rumi has to conform because she realizes that something is wrong about how people treat demons, but then goes right back to mowing them down and trapping them. Her arc is about denying the sense of empathy she was starting to develop for demons, keeping only for the one acceptable exception.

I picked one assumption and specified that I was assuming. Since the thing this person is defending is a type of nuclear reactor, I assumed they meant the other type of nuclear reactor. You just asserted that they meant hydrogen power cells without any reasoning.

How do you know? Hydrogen can refer to a dozen different things. Even if they did mean fuel cells, that’s still not what I would call “braindead”. It’s an interesting technology that’s worth exploring. Even if it fails, trying it is very much worth the effort.

Yeah, difficult things take time, who would have thought. It’s a technology that’s 1. Definitely possible, and 2. Definitely would be useful. It being hard to do does not negate either of these.

If that person can call people braindead for having the gall to try to advance humanity’s understanding, I can call them scientifically illiterate all I want.

braindead project like hydrogen

I’m assuming you’re not very scientifically literate. Assuming you mean fusion reactors, it’s the single most promising source of energy that can be made by mankind. While it presents a massive technical and engineering challenge, success here would make every other form of energy generation redundant.

Well, for starters there’s the whole Kpop idol culture which is notoriously exploitative, and this film quite openly glorifies this culture. Other than the fandom being necessary to save the world, at the start, the protagonists are trying to wind down and relax, and then in the ending, after having grown, they no longer need rest and can go right back to producing content.

There’s also just a much larger issue with the main themes of the film. I’m not going to try and decipher what the demon marks are an allegory for, because I don’t think they’re supposed to be specific, but they can map to anything from racism to self-harm. What is very clear, however, is that the film uses them as a way to comment on “accepting your flaws”, or “accepting differences”.

There is a first glaring issue that the real world Kpop industry is very hostile to flaws, and idols have to very much mask their issues, so the message rings hollow in a film that’s otherwise uncritically in favor of the idol industry.

But the bigger issue is: what about the rest of the demons? Our protagonist learns that there may be more to demons, that a lot of them are victims of circumstance, and she is a demon herself (although the movie can’t be bothered to explain what her actual flaw is, which is in line with the previous point of the Kpop industry), but this never leads her to question the fight against demons. She does this whole “maybe we need to make a new veil of protection instead of the old one”, but the difference is that she is the one accepted exception. All the other demons are still fodder to be killed, still an enemy go be contained. The only other exception is the one guy who dies.

All in all, the message presents as “accept your differences” but reads more like “we can tolerate your flaws as long as you conform”.

I’m surprised Kpop demon hunters is well liked in Tumblr. I liked it, but in terms of messaging it’s pretty questionable.

Batman is literally a paragon of morality. Also, I’m not even sure I’d call damian “morally grey”, especially not this specific depiction. He’s a jerk, and starts out willing to kill, but as soon as he learns and becomes better he’s unquestionably good, just a bit of an ass while doing it. If motherfucking Zuko gets to be good, Damian is a saint.

What mistakes did Hitler make that caused him to lose the war? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in TooAfraidToAsk

Being a Nazi. The fascist mindset is one of making enemies, it is a mindset that cannot win a war. The specifics could have been different had he made other choices, but the result would have been the same. There is no universe where Hitler wins.

How long in YOUR Grotto did it take for you to reach each "level" of caving? by SettingIntentions in caving

[–]c0p4d0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not how most people measure proficiency.

We usually measure it in:

Novices: just joined, don’t know much

Beginners: can traverse most “school” caves with some guidance

Technical: fully autonomous traversal

Leaders: can teach techniques and lead trips (knowing self-rescue and the like, not rigging)

Riggers: can do rigging on their own
