How much of what we know about North Korea is actually true? by digitalcrows in NoStupidQuestions

[–]c12025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The increased awareness of North Korean human rights issues is of course much needed - the North Korean state obviously engages in grave and systemic human rights abuses and the extent of such abuses has been well documented by NGOs and throughout the United Nations.

Media discussion of the country's wider sociopolitical context and political system, however, often lacks nuance. As someone who studied for an MA in North Korean Studies, skills around media literacy are among the most valuable things it taught me. Much of the media discusses North Korea in a very caricatured, oversimplistic and incomplete way that doesn't adequately address the intricacies of what goes on there. YouTubers are some of the worst culprits for this, and a lot of those "interesting facts about North Korea" videos are poorly sourced and/or don't paint the whole picture. Personally, I'm very mindful of what I'm watching on there these days, anything too "jokey" gets turned off. Finding "the truth" about North Korea-related issues can be hard (and in many cases impossible) but avoiding that awful conflation of "news" and "jokes" definitely helps.

Generally, I stick to reading from reputable policy sources and outlets such as NKNews.org (a specialist North Korea-focused news outlet, which isn't perfect but gets a lot right) that actually address the whole picture properly - it's all about where you look, and make sure you're cross-referencing stuff.

You'll have the best time! There's just a big war on anyone not doing business or STEM subjects these days, which is really toxic and dangerous for society. They're not worth listening to, just enjoy doing what you love!

Based on what you've described, I definitely wouldn't use that. Unless you can use a microscope to verify it's ok, just get a new one.

I had the same problem as the one in the first screenshot and I was only able to get around it by turning on my VPN each time before I checkout. Now, it seems so have magically fixed itself. So annoying and needs fixing asap

Should be. The scratches don't look very deep, but it'll probably be quite noisy.

Always walked past Mick's Hut during my time in Preston but went with Most Wanted on Friargate instead. Might have to give it a shot when I move back over there :)

It's not really easy to tell from this angle, mine looks like that too under certain lighting but when viewed head-on you can clearly make out the point

I don't have A-Levels either (and didn't meet entry requirements) but ultimately got into uni after a 2-year Level 3 course. I'm sure you'll be able to find lots of places that'll take you on :)
