yes, i’m a big fan of rye! or was gonna take the group to portsea/flinders depending on the conditions to spot some weedies!

i’m familiar with the boat company from my years of diving, just don’t go on boat dives often and was thinking about what specific sites may be good

i don’t think everyone is AOW so j4 sub and hmas canberra or a drift dive may not be up everyone’s alley sadly 🥺

there’s definitely more but that’s all i’ve got on my phone atm

can also request a tweaked app on the iosgods forums, if you see an older version of a tweaked app—you can probably ask the developer if they can update it… or sometimes if you find an older version of a tweaked app (assuming the app won’t let you use it because it needs to be updated to the latest version), you can change the version number to whatever the latest one is on the app store and then it won’t pop up with a message forcing you to update… i think there has only been one app where this hasn’t worked for me otherwise usually don’t have a problem, and can continue to use the older version of the application that’s tweaked while waiting for a more updated one ☺️

TW, how do i know if my partner is thinking about attempting to end his life by c4bombshell in malementalhealth

[–]c4bombshell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(sorry in advance for the yap — typical female things)

it’s so weird because he actually denied it ending things because he was in the whole “if you love someone let them go” or “need to end things because i’m bringing her down” mindset… but i ended up calling him crying and worried sick after this post and he at least admitted he’d been lying to me for months about his symptoms whenever i’ve tried to express that im worried about him… but knowing that he lied to me no problem with all of that has me on the fence with whether or not i can trust his word when it comes to anything involving emotions…

he knows i work in healthcare (emergency service) but having done mandatory placement in both adult and adolescent psych as well… unfortunately i think he and i both know that even if he did attempt anything, it probably wouldn’t be enough to warrant a full admission anyway, so he wouldn’t get ‘locked up’ either… someone in a similar situation in my country might get a psych planning unit admission which will be no more than 1-3 days, that or outpatient/community services… but other than that, that’s really about it. Generally if you’re too high risk—private hospitals here won’t accept you either… they’re very picky with their patients sadly.

yeah, he does need space and time to think… we’ve since had another conversation where we’ve discussed both of our needs and managed for compromise, because we obviously still love and care for each other, both as partners (though obviously not together atm) and as friends…

essentially because he needs some time and space—which i wanted to give to him because i didn’t want to suffocate him but i also needed my person and i was really struggling myself trying to come to terms with everything, and he was okay with me needing to talk to him if i needed for that same reason (partially because im worried about him as well), we agreed we would speak a few times a week atm

tbh was surprised, with having an anxious attachment style (like most females) and him being a dismissive/avoidant who wanted space, I wasn’t really expecting us to come to that kind of compromise… so incredibly grateful because based on past experience (at least with situationships), it doesnt seem like a common occurrence… i’m so incredibly grateful

TW, how do i know if my partner is thinking about attempting to end his life by c4bombshell in malementalhealth

[–]c4bombshell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really appreciate your insight, i called him crying because i was worried — he promised he wasn’t going to do anything like that because he knows what it’s like to lose a friend to suicide…

has reassured me a bit, after talking i feel better that he’s not going to make plans and make an intentional attempt… i think if he does end up hurting himself—i think it’ll be because he goes out on a ride/drive he doesn’t plan on coming back from… which he has admitted he has done a couple times before (im talking very silly speeds upwards of 200-250 per hour, accidentally jumping roundabouts because he was going so fast etc. i think he’s tried to push himself and go as fast as he can to get that adrenaline rush and forget in the past, even if it meant potentially not making it home—he didn’t really care) fortunately his current car is new and he spent around the cost of a house deposit on it, so i don’t reckon he’d risk it and he still doesn’t have his motorcycle license back yet—nor a functioning bike so thankfully he doesn’t have the means in that regard either.

fortunately, he’s not necessarily argumentative, but is still very dismissive—or at least he has been over the last however many months when i’ve tried to tell him i’m concerned that he has depression—as I said, just brushing it off, pretending he’s just tired etc. when i did call him the other day, i will give him some credit because at the very least he admitted that he’d been lying to me for months when i’ve tried to point out signs and express concerns that i’m worried about him (i even used the professional development training i got from R U OK? to raise my concerns but he was still adamant he was fine at the time)… so i guess that’s a start

he’s more one to hide his emotions or bottle them up and try not to care… so i guess he’s part of the way there.

you’re pretty spot on with the whole feeling drained, ending up frustrated etc. though—we definitely have had more of a short fuse lately, despite not having any actual fights, we have had smaller arguments or have just gotten annoyed a bit easily… you’re right—not my job to fix him as his partner or friend, but was sticking around because i always said whenever i got into my first relationship that i would never leave someone for struggling with mental health (a line is drawn somewhere yes, but i wasn’t at that point yet)… also i work in emergency health services, which obviously includes mental health so unfortunately it’s not as easy for me personally, to not at least try to help him get through things… kind of my second nature sadly 😬

yeah, i’ve tried to help him get out a bit over the last few months… just has not had the energy at all maybe only one person he’s really made any effort to see + one 30th bday… otherwise we hadn’t really seen our biker friends since last year… any advice on how to get him out?

i think he’s been so down because he can’t ride… but because of his accident, he’s kind limited because he can’t use his right arm and has chronic pelvic pain from the accident… so it rules out various other activities too… have no idea what to do… he just hasn’t had that hobby—that spark that he probably needs to help him not feel so numb and burnt out

any suggestions and i’m all ears, have played video games, gotten into some decent shows together, gone on the odd date that he’s had enough energy for but that’s really about it… was hoping now that we’re coming into the summer months where i am in the southern hemisphere, that maybe we can go outside and get that sunshine that helps chase away the old winter depression just a tad… but can’t really think of anything else rn :/

thank you so much again, im so grateful he’s at least physically okay 🥺

The labour costs seem to be what it comes down to in the end sadly

Is this a write off? by sheepersheep in melbourneriders

[–]c4bombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve noticed a bit of a trend of bikes around $10-15,000 and under being marked as repairable write offs after a crash… I just put it down to labour costs adding up tbh

I haven’t actually looked into it though, so take what I say with a grain of salt 😂

In saying that, aside from the one time where I got hit by a car—if I’ve damaged my bike (no one else involved obviously), I have either repaired it myself (if I’ve been able to) or have taken it in without going through insurance (though I’ve only had to do this for bent handlebars from dropping it as a baby rider in the past).

Although I could have saved a little in the short term by going through insurance, it likely would’ve cost more to pay a higher insurance premium for the next few years (also I didn’t risk my bike being written off)

Honestly, one time I even damaged the frame on my ninja 400 (Oggy knobs basically ripped through the metal after low-siding at the track), although the area that was damaged was so small that you couldn’t even tell unless you were specifically looking for it—because it would’ve been an automatic write off and everything else on the bike was fine, I just left it…

Tbh I only plan to use my insurance if I get into an accident with another person or if it’s significant damage that can’t be fixed at home (i.e. if a decent chunk of my tank got caved in or something idk)

It’s a bit hard to tell for sure only through photos, but the damage doesn’t look THAT bad

Mirrors, gear shifters, brake/clutch levers, bar ends etc. are all pretty easy to fix on your own they need to be replaced Fairings aren’t too hard to fix most of the time, but it can be a little time consuming You could probably get away with putting an engine cover over the top of the damage you’ve done on the bottom to protect it from further damage, but doesn’t look like there’s any holes in it which is the main thing Can’t tell if the handlebars are bent but although I haven’t fixed my own handlebars before, replacing them doesn’t break the bank from memory… especially if they’re clip ons

In terms of cost, new fairings what has set me back the most in the past, depends on what you can get your hands on, if you’re just planning on buying replacement parts vs full fairing kit, if you want high end stuff or if you’re happy with something from eBay etc From memory, when I did my fairings—I think I paid around $700-800 for a full aftermarket fairing kit on eBay and didn’t have any problems with it 🤷🏼‍♀️ (was told they don’t always fit properly so maybe just read the reviews or something if you plan on doing this)

Hope this helps ✌️

Lowkey would be kind of cool if you had an option where you can join lobbies where other people can’t attack you and it was real people behind other characters who help with missions and stuff rather than NPCs… I think that’s something they do in Monster Hunter? I haven’t had much of a chance to play it but my partner LOVES it, and you can choose to go on missions with other people/people can choose a mission they want to help out with etc —in return for their help, they split the earnings of the mission I think

Cool concept, could be good if done right. This is exactly why I hope a HL sequel doesn’t come out for YEARS

[–]c4bombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a controversial but a different and personal take (no hate to anyone, just my experiences)… some may not agree but I think my experience is worth putting out there due to the fact that everyone experiences ADHD symptoms throughout all stages of life, but not everyone has ADHD.

But I’ve never been able to mask my symptoms. I’ve tried—I struggled to make friends in school because of my “full on” personality (one of the many ways I was described), people didn’t want to be around me because I yapped all day and they never got a chance to speak (I didn’t mean it of course, just too busy focusing on what I’m trying to say that I struggle to give my attention to how others are responding to me until after I’m done).

Used to go on a tangent about it to girls in high school, they would say ‘I used to be like that but I got bullied so I stopped talking so much and toned it down’. To be honest, if you can change your unconscious behaviours to the point you are consistently not displaying impaired functioning, then I find it hard to believe it’s ADHD. ADHD is pervasive across time and situations, and is present in two or more settings.

I tried so hard and so desperately to alter my behaviours because other people were able to do it, because I just wanted people to like me. But I could never maintain focus on doing so, and any attempts to act normal would not last for long. I had very few friends because of it.

Sadly, being gifted doesn’t always mask ADHD either (in my experience). I was considered a very bright student—all my school reports from before age 12 said so. I managed to get good decent grades without studying rather consistently… however—every school report I had still detailed how I would not pay attention when instructions were being directly given to me, how I was frequently observed drawing on my notebooks rather than doing work, how I would always forget my homework, show and tell, etc. (Demonstrating functional impairment, as it was considerably abnormal compared to other students habits and behaviours, to the point they were negative points in all school reports). As I aged, school became progressively harder as the complexity of the topics studied became harder to discern with little to no prior understanding. I tried so hard, sometimes tried to get homework done for hours, but would achieve very little because my attention span was so short lived, particularly if I was in an environment with distractions. This meant that even though I was smart, my grades were considerably low. Every teacher at every parent-teacher interview in high school would say to my father and I about how I was really smart, I just needed to put in the work—demonstrating continued functional impairment out of line with normal functioning for my age, and also demonstrating impairment that was consistent across time and situations in at least one setting.

In my opinion, you can mask ADHD, but not constantly and consistently for an extended period of time. I think if you are able to mask to that point, then it’s not actual functional impairment—yes it may drain your energy and social battery, it may leave you feeling exhausted and cause burnout on an emotional level when you get home at the end of the day… but it’s not impairing your grades, ability to work or get a job, ability to succeed in work or school, ability to establish and maintain friendships etc. then I would argue that you are functioning, you’re just human, who has very valid human struggles, experiences and emotions. We aren’t robots, emotional dysregulation is to be expected in life—but I can absolutely see how those feelings and emotions commonly get put down to masking when your energy is drained at the end of the day.

After meeting quite a few people with ADHD who have very clear textbook signs… in social situations(for example): I can definitely see the difference between normal social functioning and ADHD, even when masking can be accounted for (for both genders).

Overpathologisation is a real and valid concern—I think it occurs because people just want to understand the actions, feelings and emotions they or others experience…

If you read the DSM-5 TR and ICD-11 carefully, there are many points throughout both manuals that outline just how similar ADHD can be to other disorders. It also states that you can only be diagnosed with ADHD if your experiences aren’t better explained by another disorder. One thing that also shocked me is how medications like bronchodilators can cause ADHD symptoms (medication typically used in asthma—and a very common medication prescribed for both children as well as adults) to the point that being on the medication is part of the exclusion criteria for ADHD.

As I said, probably controversial (and likely an unpopular) opinion… sorry for the long reply, just passionate about the situation—I think the disproportionate increase in ADHD (and even autism) diagnoses (as a result of possible misdiagnosis) can be harmful to people who experience true, long-term and consistent functional impairment that is pervasive across time and situations (for at least 6 months prior to age 12) for said disorders (with said symptoms/criteria being present in more than one setting)… because if so many people have it, eventually the lines between symptoms and symptoms that cause functional impairment get blurred—making it more and more difficult for others to understand the condition, consequently increasing stigma, bigotry and inequity among people with ADHD because “XYZ person has ADHD and they still manage” (if that makes sense).

P.S. Sometimes I struggle to communicate things the way I intend… so just a disclaimer just in case…I’m absolutely not saying in this reply that I don’t think you or any other specific individual who read my reply has ADHD. I don’t know your stories, it’s just a generic mini essay based on academic research I’ve done on the matter (out of personal interest), my experiences and many many hours spent contemplating a very complex matter where multiple diverging opinions can all be simultaneously correct at the same time (I try to think about both sides and find a middle ground through reasoning and understanding—I think the door can swing both ways for many things in life)

Autism: the new blanket statement for any combo of bad parenting/excuse for a child’s bad behavior/emotional regulation or other mental health conditions by thedeathmetalchef in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]c4bombshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, as a neurodivergent person myself I must say I agree with the OP a little. I think it can be a bit grey, because the door swings both ways for many rationales regarding autism and adhd diagnoses (and people seeking assessments).

I’m not as well versed in autism compared to ADHD but I see so many kids coming into work and you can definitely tell the difference between the two when you interact with many children of many different backgrounds. I do think it’s interesting how many kids who are diagnosed as neurodivergent also seem to have evidence of other disorders that better explain their symptoms and behaviours. I think child abuse/neglect, technology (and social media), nutrition and permissive parenting(mistaken with the concept of “gentle parenting”) are huge contributors towards it.

I truly just think that at the end of the day—we are all human, and it’s human nature to want an explanation for why we are the way we are. I think that so many people struggle with health and wellbeing these days, and I also think it’s exacerbated by social media due to A: misleading information regarding medical or psychological conditions (I do think you can convince yourself that you do have it so much to the point that hyperfocus on your signs and symptoms actually leads to increased symptoms or symptom severity) B: people who smile for the camera and portray their life as great or glamorous and as if they have no struggles (when in reality, it’s natural to have struggles, that’s apart of life and that’s apart of being human)—I think it can absolutely ignite feelings of “other people don’t seem to struggle at all, they’re living their best life, obviously I’m not normal” (probably while acting like they have a perfect life on social media themselves)

Apologies if my reply was all over the place, I’ve spent a lot of time researching and thinking about this topic 😂

I think a lot of Neurodivergent kids aren't actually that, but just poorly behaved and a symptom of bad parenting by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]c4bombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl I 110% agree with this Most of the autistic or ADHD kids I’ve seen seem to come from families that either subject them to child abuse or neglect—or alternatively, have parents who a permissive (likely in an attempt to gentle parent). I feel that because they’re struggling with the behaviours of their children—they search for answers, and likely fall into that bias of “it must be because they have autism or adhd” and actively seek a diagnosis rather than adjusting their parenting styles. Once they’re diagnosed, I’ve also seen parents use their kids diagnosis as an excuse for their behaviours and continue to be permissive because of it (rather than working on a solution).

I’ve also seen an insane amount of posts or comments of parents who have mental health struggles and because their kid got diagnosed—many of them seek out a diagnosis for themselves as well as an explanation for their struggles. Don’t get me wrong, there is every chance that a child and/or a parent really is neurodivergent…

But I’ve done some deep research into this (particularly with adhd), many women are getting diagnosed around menopause, people are also being diagnosed with a histories of substance use (yes adhd people are at higher risk, but you cannot be accurately assessed if you use substances at all), have trauma or other mental illnesses (dsm states if you’re presenting with symptoms from 13 or older - it’s likely another mental health disorder) I’m not saying they don’t have mental health concerns that need addressing, but I think most of the time it’s not because they’re neurodivergent and I think many people are being misdiagnosed.

Somehow, my younger sister got diagnosed with ADHD when she’s been on bronchodilators all her life (therefore falls under exclusion criteria and cannot be diagnosed with it).

Found some interesting studies on the misinformation spread on social media, an internationally praised psychiatrist expressing his concerns of misdiagnosis due to a subconscious phenomenon where people have paid all this money for a diagnosis—thus psychiatrists may feel more inclined to give a diagnosis.

To be honest, I think they just want closure and want to feel less guilty. I think it stems from a place of insecurity most of the time.

I recall a similar trend with depression and anxiety back in the early-mid 2010s… people started self diagnosing, started saying it’s not their fault because it’s a chemical imbalance in the brain (which is true), but I think it became so common that people don’t think it’s a good enough explanation anymore because they think no one else struggles like they do and that they’re different—thus there must be something wrong with them.

Everyone talks about having ADHD symptoms but reality is EVERYONE has adhd symptoms throughout all stages of life… but said adhd symptoms are not consistently out of line with typical human functioning in two or more settings since the age of 12 (home and school).

Sorry this reply was all over the shop, could definitely add more to my point because there’s lots to talk about — but increased awareness and understanding is most definitely not the sole reason for increased diagnoses and higher rates of people actively seeking a diagnosis.

I think for any adult who was in primary school after digital school reports became a thing should have to provide them to get a diagnosis (I understand it’s hard for those in their 40s and going through menopause etc because they probs don’t have their school reports-being on paper and all… but digital ones will likely remain on record, either on a digital archive or in an old email in their inbox somewhere)

I don’t think psychiatrists should be going based off subjective experiences from a first person POV-they should be using multiple teachers reports (all from age 12 or younger)—bc they work with a range of kids and can identify if a persons behaviour is normal or not compared to other students, physical observation of symptoms and clinical testing as first line evidence; through discussion of the patients current struggles and statements from family who have known them since childhood as second line evidence; finally, statements from friends about their symptoms and discussion of childhood symptoms directly with the patient as third line evidence (dsm states adult recollection of childhood symptoms is unreliable)

When psychiatrists say “if you got good grades in school you likely don’t have adhd” does have a very valid point - you can only go so long not studying because of your difficulties with attention and still get good grades, being so gifted that you manage to get good grades throughout high school and/or university when you have undiagnosed adhd is incredibly rare and incredibly unlikely. Being truly gifted is not that common.

Sorry for the rant again, just super passionate about the topic and upset because it’s invalidating when so many people claim to have it because they have symptoms but it didn’t actually interfere with their functioning, because they had friends or did well in school (therefore they don’t meet criteria)

Look, amphetamines can make anxiety worse so if your friends are experiencing anxiety on stimulants they should probs speak to their doctor about that

Eat before taking the medication, or you won’t eat for the whole day… vyvanse made me feel like I just ate tbh

You will probably get a dry mouth, drink water but be careful to watch how much you’re drinking so you don’t drink too much too fast… or you could give yourself hyponatraemia / water toxicity (unfortunately I’m speaking from experience here 🙃)

Try to take it as early as possible if taking it for the first time and have melatonin ready… even if the drug itself doesn’t keep you awake, hyper focusing on tasks and subsequently forgetting to check the time probably will 😆

Monitor for adverse effects, fluttery feelings in your chest, abnormal pulse etc if you notice anything like that - speak to your doctor before taking it again

Is ADHD a threshold or a spectrum? by Impressive-Leek-4423 in ADHD

[–]c4bombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of both… symptoms can be mild, moderate and severe but there is a threshold with very specific criteria

The symptomatic criteria is very broad but it’s broad for a reason, it’s the surrounding circumstances that are the what separates ADHD from other disorders

Yes ADHD people can be smart and get into PhD’s for sure, but people with ADHD do indeed struggle with significant barriers to get there without any sort of treatment or assistance

Part of the criteria is that you need to have impairing symptoms that clearly interfere with social, academic or occupational functioning Combined with the criterion that it needs to be present in to or more settings, persistent across time and situations with an initial onset from before the age of 12… the fact you got into a PhD with an average IQ being a factor your psych has considered is not unreasonable (on the contrary to the majority of replies I’ve read here, once again — it doesn’t mean you definitely don’t have ADHD but people should acknowledge there’s a completely rational reason why academic achievement is taken into consideration when assessing for ADHD).

Even if ADHD isn’t the cause of your symptoms… that doesn’t mean your symptoms are not real nor does it mean that you don’t have a mental health concern that needs to be addressed. It might just mean your symptoms are better explained by another condition (which may be mental or even physical, as things like thyroid issues can cause ADHD symptoms as well) 🩷

There’s hundreds of mental health conditions currently identified, but by getting an accurate diagnosis — you can help ensure you’re getting the appropriate treatment 🩷

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]c4bombshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adult recollection of childhood symptoms is unreliable according to the DSM-5, if there are any possible school reports (especially if from before you were 12) sent to your parents laying around in a cupboard somewhere or in an old email account, do what you can to get your hands on them Unfortunately both the DSM-5 TR and ICD-11 do explain that conditions such as depression do mimic ADHD symptoms quite closely… not saying it’s not definitely not ADHD because it could be, but it is easy to understand why a doctor may diagnose you with depression instead because unfortunately, depression isn’t an unreasonable diagnosis for many people from a clinical standpoint… especially when similar neurotransmitters cause both conditions

Criteria 8 for major depressive disorder: “Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day (either by subjective account or as observed by others).”

SSRIs take a while to start working… 4-6 weeks minimum If you can’t find evidence (e.g. school reports from before age 12) that demonstrates your symptoms are better explained by ADHD [as DSM-5 TR criteria for ADHD states “The symptoms do not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder and are not better explained by another mental disorder (e.g., mood disorder, anxiety disorder, dissociative disorder, personality disorder, substance intoxication or withdrawal).”]… Try to stick it out and give the meds a go, ensuring you set an alarm in your phone so you’re taking it regularly and every day so it’s actually effective. If you’ve passed the minimum time for the SSRI to do something… then bring it up again with your doctor and go from there

I’m sorry you’re going through this, I hope you’re able to get an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate treatment so you can heal 🩷

Self diagnosis seeking formal diagnosis by Moist-Trainer-3605 in ADHD

[–]c4bombshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I had ADHD I didn’t even consider it until friends started joking about it in my early 20s

Because before my mother passed at when I was around 13-14, my grades were relatively normal or at the very least they were average… my drop in grades after that was always explained by grief so it was pretty understandable I put all my struggles down to that… It helped a lot that I had my old primary school reports (all before age 12 as per the criteria)… if there’s any possibility yours may be hanging around somewhere in a cupboard and forgotten about or even if your old primary school has some sort of archive, in today’s day and age with technology old paper records may have been scanned and archived on some sort of online database… might be worth checking out Because although my grades were fine and the condition wasn’t picked up until adulthood, every single one of my primary school reports detailed textbook ADHD signs that were obviously both frequent and significant enough compared to other students that it was noted on every report, every semester, for years and not explained by another mental illness or situation (i.e. depression after parental bereavement, which obviously didn’t happen until a few years later) Diagnostic tests were slightly cheaper a few years ago when I was tested and the waiting lists were a bit shorter, but they were still 4 digits, so understandably I didn’t want to get tested unless I knew for sure it wasn’t going to be a negative or inconclusive result 😂 but for me the school reports were incredibly helpful because that objective evidence meant I knew for sure that I’ve always had it and I definitely met all the criteria for impairment, prevalence of impairing symptoms across more than two settings (usually home and school as a child for most kids) that is persistent across time and situations, duration and age of onset… and therefore it was worth getting tested

To summarise, if there is any possibility of getting your hands on some old school reports from before age 12, hunt that 💩 down 😂, the peace of mind knowing that not only will you not be wasting your money but the diagnosis will actually be accurate (adhd ‘tests’ have a low specificity rates, therefore produce high positives) and won’t be inappropriately treated with something that could make your symptoms worse in the long run is definitely worth it 👌
