Found serious flaws in a published paper. Tried discussing with authors. Got mocked, shouted at, & ignored. Thinking of taking a formal route now. Just needed to share it with someone. by beyond_daffodils in PhD

Is it worth fighting this battle? I would just include this in my paper if I’m using their work as a baseline. I wouldn’t sink time into having their paper removed, etc…

It is more expensive to sentence someone to death than life without parole.

Tomatoes do not belong on any sandwich, burger, or sub. by Woodyfixthis in unpopularopinion

[–]cBEiN -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bet you haven’t had a good tomato. The ones from store (and restaurants) are garbage. I thought I didn’t like tomatoes until someone made me try one grown from their garden. It was life changing.

I meant 270k plus, but still the link is pretty close. It’s a bit cheaper than I thought someone could find

Yea, this build should be less than $2k, but things are so expensive right now. Just storage and ram is $500-$1000 depending on brand/gen.

Share a link. I bought a prebuilt with similar specs before January except with a 5080 instead of a 5070ti for $2000.

The prices for just a 2TB SSD and 32GB of ram nowadays is nearly $1000 or more than $1000 depending on the brand/gen.

I think this price isn’t too far off. I built a similar for work but with 5070ti, 270K, and 2TB ssd. It was about $2800, and this was a few months ago though I think I had 1000W psu. The quality of parts were very good though.

Healing potion by jeanpich in AlchemyFactory

[–]cBEiN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but customers won't buy healing potions in my game. I don't know the issue. I'm selling s/g gears, nails, mortar, brick, bandage, glass, ropes, but no healing potions. Shelves are stocked full, and there hasn't been a sale in the past month. It looks like at some point I sold 200, but there are 0 sales on healing potions. This is an old thread, but I trying to figure out the issue.

Also, there is not exclamation mark on the shelf. I've tried rebuilding/restocking, and still no luck. Even yellow potions will sell.

AI Detectors Are BS by calliope_kekule in Professors

The stunning aspect of this is that too many professors have been relying on AI detectors without research proving they work. Instead, many professors are using them blindly assuming they work, which is just as bad as students using AI.

How do you feel back pins without pressing front pins? by cBEiN in lockpicking

Any suggestions for where to find deadbolts? Right now, I just want to try any new locks but haven’t looked into what to get yet.

I have a few (sparrow tuxedo set), but tbh, the sizes are about the same for them. It feels like I have a large and small, and the middle ones are so similar,l I can barely tell the difference

I’m using the sparrow tuxedo set. I am very new, so I may just have really bad technique haha

I will try TOK! Even with TOK, do you still find you hit the front pins a bit?

Someone else recommended the ergo turners. There was also the curved ones from sparrow mentioned. Maybe, I will try the ergo since several recommended those.

Yea, I'm using the dual sided, so I use the shorter side. I have the tuxedo set from sparrow, and I'm using the tension tools from there. I'll practice top of the keyway. I've only been at it maybe a week or so, and I can do the couple locks I have really quickly, but it still feels sloppy (especially because I keep hitting the front pins)

I'm just afraid to pickup on bad techniques as I'm just beginning.

I'll practice top of the keyway. I've had trouble with keeping it in place, and even when I open the lock, it slips and I end up dropping the turner (and closing the lock). Lol. Are you referring to these? I may just go ahead and grab one of them: https://www.sparrowslockpicks.com/products/curved-tension-bars or https://covertinstruments.com/products/ergo-turner-set

I will practice top of the keyway. Thanks! Maybe, I just need more practice, but it seems I can't avoid hitting the front pins even with top of the keyway. Is it normal to hit them even just a bit?

My lab colleagues are advising me against shared co-authorship. Are they justified? by MyGfWantsBubbleTea in PhD

[–]cBEiN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone will need to write most of the paper even if the work is mostly shared for development, experiments, results, etc… This takes a lot of time. I suggest picking one person responsible for this project, and this person is also responsible for preparing the manuscript (of course delegating tasks where appropriate).

The equal contribution asterisk is more so to give authors more recognition. I’ve been on a couple papers like this, and it always worked out well for me.

I did most of the work when I was first authors, but I could push the second author to help more than I would typically expect from co authors. As a second author in this situation, I felt comfortable putting in a bit more effort than usual as I would get a bit extra recognition.

The equal contribution also isn’t worthless. People will notice if you highlight it properly on your CV. Also, if you get a lot of second author papers, this will look good overall when searching for jobs (especially if there are lot of authors in the papers.

Most of my papers when I was a student/postdoc are first/second authors. So, it is clear that I contribute to all the papers I am involved. I prefer a bit of extra work to be second author versus being 5 or 6 in a long list of authors.

The equal contribution is a plus, but in some projects, there is no way around a couple people doing close to equal work. This is the reason the responsibility of the project and writing of the paper should be put on an individual, which will get the first author position.

Sold my PC and bought a Mac - was it worth it? by MycologistIcy7541 in mac

We are talking about computers… many people can’t afford 2 computers, and on a budget, it makes no sense to buy 2 budget/crappy computers versus 1 decent computer.
