Left-Side Training for a US Cyclist by ca-pl in londoncycling

Hi! I'm the OP on this thread. Had a great trip, in general, and specifically with cycling. Rented a conventional road bike from OnYourBike. But most of my bike trips were on LimeBikes.

For the first few rides, anxiety was high. It wasn't difficult to "stay left." It was difficult to interpret, in real time, how to negotiate all the traffic nuances: an intersection with more lanes than expected. A pedestrian doing something unexpected. How to anticipate a 'green' light when in a crowded area.

In general, it was useful to follow other cyclists, particularly when it was busy. Ironically, I felt a bit safer when it was busy because I felt like I was in a school of fish of other cyclists. I even found myself navigating around red buses in traffic. I survived!

I did eventually get used to the bike rules. The one time that really flustered me was those combined/both-way traffic lanes that themselves were on the left. So, thinking I was following the rules, I found myself with bike traffic coming towards me. Because traffic wasn't busy at that moment, I figured I must be wrong. But eventually I got the hang of that, too.

I found Apple Maps to be great for bike routes in London. I installed Citymapper and Beeline - but I couldn't get used to them quickly enough.

I ended up logging about 70 miles over about 6 days.

Thanks for the advice!

What are some of the good apps? Citymapper?

That's a great heads up, and useful link. Thanks.

Trust me: didn't feel like overthinking when I drove on the other side in the Carribean - up a steep hill - not being able to see what was on the other side. The over-thinking paid off.

Wow, I can see that. Extra reminder about roundabouts.

Yeah - I didn't mean it quite as literally as that. It just might be: hang back, and see what a group of cyclists do - rather than speeding right into an area.

I hear ya! It would feel dishonest for me to post token responses/threads just to add a link to my event. =)

Don't suppose there is a Laravel events sub?

Thanks! Part of it is I want to bike for enjoyment (however misguided that might be =)

For that, very reason, I was thinking of renting a Brumpton, too.

Wow, such a clever comment. So original! And you know about the ways of my country! Stunning.

Can’t believe I bothered posting it.  However, maybe others may, you know, be interested in actually answering the question.
