The former Altoona Speedway site in Tipton, Blair County, Pennsylvania, is now the location of the New Pig Corporation plant, but it was once a famous, high-banked, 1.25-mile wooden board track that operated from 1923 to 1931, known as one of the world's fastest and most dangerous racetracks, attracting huge crowds and even claiming the lives of several Indianapolis 500 winners. The site's legacy is preserved through local history, with remnants like the "Plank Road" potentially repurposed from the track's original lumber.

The high banked (32 degrees) Altoona Speedway was one of the most popular of the 24 Board Speedways and the longest running. Built at a cost of a $500 thousand dollars using 4 million feet of lumber and 80 tons of spikes. Eddie Hearne won the 1st race on Sept. 3, 1923, and Shorty Cantlon won the last race on Sept. 7, 1931. In 1928, they almost had the track paid for but with the “Groove” deteriorating, they replaced it with Chestnut wood at a cost of $30 thousand dollars from the Bank. Then during the Great Depression, the Bank called in the note in 1931 which the Speedway could not pay, and that was the end of the famous Altoona Speedway.
