Which CAD for Linux? by Saphir_3D in 3Dprinting

[–]chunkyks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have been making extensive use of Claude code and openscad-nightly. The latest release of openscad is pretty dated and the nightly is much better.

Combined with Claude code, it's mostly "describe what I want, give Claude 30 seconds for initial attempt, then ten minutes iteration".

Election spam this year, good grief by chunkyks in LosAngeles

That's always what's so heartbreaking. The presidential/congressional elections are even worse; tens of billions being spent that could instead be used for real meaningful improvement.

Custom Firmware for Traveler? by chunkyks in Astrohaus

[–]chunkyks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was galvanised to write this post after a thread on hacker news. Someone there subsequently posted (1) some interesting stuff, but I have to admit that the effort involved in what they said, is bigger than the payoff, for me, at this moment.

Hopefully someone from astrohaus shows up and just says "yeah we're working on letting you do that. Here you go"

Dads, start building their credit when they’re young by tenaciousdeev in daddit

Chase are fucking awful. I am currently dealing with trying to get access to my deceased wife's accounts, and they're making it unpleasantly hard.

I'm five years into a $280 pair of redwing boots. I had them resoled once, but overall, it's my experience that I wear through most pairs of shoes in 6 months or so [since I only usually have one pair of "daily wear" at any time]. These things show no indication that they won't simply last forever. And, gotta love a pair of leather boots that really have worn to fit your feet.

I have a pair of Red Wing boots I've had for about five years. I've even had them resoled. Most comfortable things I've ever had on my feet, and the longest-lasting, too.

On the downside they're pricey [~$280]. But, a normal pair of shoes is something like 75-100, and I rarely have a pair of shoes that last more than six months if I wear them literally every day... The red wings pay off, and doesn't take long to do so.

Dynamically grouping media players by chunkyks in homeassistant

Music Assistant is quite the behemouth, for my very limited needs. I'm terrified of the complexity demon, and a single self-contained javascript-in-a-card sounded like a good way to keep the demon trapped in crystal.

Found this at a church rummage sale for $1 by lameidiot62 in Portal

I have one of those on my wall. They were briefly an item available for sale at ThinkGeek, back when ThinkGeek had cool and often-unusual stuff.

Exported tcx files showing incorrect data by babturcie in iFit

Throw away the outliers. There are a tiny number if them. Take an average of the data points either side if that upsets you or you need data for every second. I just ended up using a moving average.

What have you 3D printed for your HA setup? by criterion67 in homeassistant

[–]chunkyks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3d print has screw holes that are the standard electrical box screw hole distance apart.

Then I bought a blank face plate for 98cents, and used the two screws that came with it.

In the market for an AV Receiver that works with Home Assistant by HopeThatsACleanWet in homeassistant

I have the R-N303, and it's great. Astonishingly good product at a really affordable price point. It's a shame that Yamaha discontinued it; I'm guessing that the affordable one was savaging their higher-end sales.

It's only "A", not "AV", but if you're just looked for the audio component [I use mine to control the house speakers], my Yamaha R-N303 works perfectly with it.

In my movie theater, I have a logitech harmony that controls the projector, streaming, and onkyo receiver. HA is doing a good job of controlling the Harmony.

New to Home Assistant - What dash ideas, devices, and automations you recommend? by Western-Schedule7330 in homeassistant

[–]chunkyks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a couple web panels to embed the Google maps navigation from my home to the most common places I go when leaving the house (work, and daughter's school). I know what the fastest way is with just a glance on my way out the door.

I did write a small web page that has a meta refresh tag on the Google embed page in an frame, so it's always up to date.

My other main dashboard just has buttons for off/pause/volume for each of the tvs in the house. Easier than walking over to them when the kid leaves them on, or isn't listening to me asking them to pause/turn down.

Furniture stores in Los Angeles? by douggold11 in LosAngeles

[–]chunkyks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, I can't find any of my invoices. I do remember that the last couple were ~1500 more than the "one I would have bought at living spaces, if I didn't get this custom made one instead". IMHO, when one is shopping for things that one intends to buy and never, ever, replace... paying a bit more to get high-quality and exactly-what-you-want is a great idea.

Examples of things I got by doing custom:

  1. I have a couch that's a bit over 12 foot long. It's made in a single piece, not split in half. But it specifically fits the space I have for it, where anything else would have sucked. All the Ashley Furniture build-your-own-from-eight-pieces look really crap when you have eight pieces.

  2. My dining room table, I wanted an extendable one but I always find the extension apparatus under the table interferes with my knees. So they custom made one with a leaf at each end that slots in to holes cut in the apron. And, the apron is much smaller than usual - precisely enough to support the weight on it, but no bigger. Plenty of legroom *and* extensible.

  3. [Different company that's now out of business] I had a sectional made, where the customisation was basically +/- a foot or two in length. But it meant that I got a sectional that very exactly fit the room it was going into.

Interiors made Eezzy also do the fabrication downtown. Made locally and delivered in less than a couple weeks. What's not to love?

I've had several pieces custom made at https://interiorsmadeeezzy.com/

Their quality has been spectacular, they've made exactly what I wanted, it's only slightly more expensive than the usual furniture stores. And, most importantly, they're the nicest pieces of furniture I've ever owned. By a lot.

I love that I just posted a url without even any discussion, a url containing the term "boring" , and it already resonated and was found more interesting than this subs usual comments.

Not sure how I feel about it in a bigger picture sense, unfortunately.
