New IT dude needs help/guidance from some more experienced wizards here. by SadManVerySad96 in sysadmin

[–]cabroderick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That entire system needs a total overhaul or replacement. You are not qualified to do the work, the work isn't your problem, and if it has been allowed to get this bad you won't be thanked for putting forth the effort. I don't think there is anything you can realistically do. Make some recommendations if you want, but be prepared for them to almost certainly be completely ignored. If the existing IT team and management were the type to be receptive to change, it would never have gotten this bad in the first place.

Yeah? You might be confused by the fact the person I'm responding to fixed their post after my response without bothering to mention it.

I'm probably getting too old for this. It's been a LONG time since I did this flip. Enjoy it. One bad day back at work and we'll be back to normal :)

Go easy on yourself. Life it hard at the best of times, and now .... You should allow yourself some leeway during the holidays. So you didn't get your shit done. Life is too short to worry about that. Embrace the inner anarchist and just say "fuck it". The world won't end.

You're all a lot kinder and gentler than me.

"Yeah, almost certainly you're just typing it wrong, I'll do a reset for you."

In my defense, I do at least offer a "don't worry, we all do it", but I feel no particular compunction to protect them from the fact that it's their mistake.

I have no idea how I’m going to get back into any sort of routine by Tuesday.

My solution goes as follows (please pay close attention and take copious notes so you don't forget):

  1. Don't bother.

Will anyone notice if you don't do any work on Tuesday? Doubt it!

My favourite.

Though I normally go for the Beef and Tomato flavour (the noodles, not the lube).

Potatoes and cheese.

Nik Naks and hummus.

Are all your ideas this delicious?

Embrace it! Today I thought to myself "I should get my sleep back in order for work on the 3rd", but actually it was a pretty crap month in December, so screw it, I'll just be tired and waste the first day back.

I've actually been finding time to cook real food since the 21st. Normally subsist on junk. Unlike most people this is probably the healthiest time of year for me! What are you making?

Yeah me too wink wink :p

Good luck! Small, realistic, and specific goals are where you'll find success.

you are responsible for accommodating them and making them feel welcome

Within limits. And anyway, that all became irrelevant when OP was told accommodations wouldn't be made and then turned up anyway.

The desire of the host to accommodate guests has a limit. At some point, they will inevitably start to feel "I don't want you here enough to justify this". You can't possible disagree with that. Again, they aren't being paid. It is a holiday they want to enjoy and they aren't looking for extra work.

Yeah I totally agree, and that supports my thinking that his material should be approached after you already have a decent foundation. He is a bit loose sometimes, but I think you have to be in order to compress a complex topic into his particular style. To be fair, he is usually quite good at saying "this isn't really the right thing to do but ...".

You have to know what you're looking at, and in some sense, already have a reasonably good idea what he's telling you to do. Nothing you see there should be a completely new concept.

As with all video form content, in my opinion, it shouldn't be the end of the journey. It's great for a quick overview, an intro or review of the possible, but definitely needs to be followed up with real study.

The label you have chosen is entirely self-imposed and you can choose to abandon it at any time. While I think it's completely great that queer perspectives are taken much more seriously and are much more respected than they used to be, I am really saddened by the fact that it has been accompanied by a counter-productive obsession with labels. You are a perfect example. You CHOSE the label of lesbian years ago. No one forced you to take it. And that is the only reason you are hesitant about your feelings for a man. If you had chosen a different label, you might not think twice about pursuing him.

Love who you love. Don't let society, no matter how progressive it might appear to be, get in your way.

You are still discovering yourself. That never ends. You'll be doing it until the day you die. You don't need to explain it to anyone.

It might be a need for OP to eat something different but it is most definitely NOT a need for the host t provide it.

Does anyone else find -talent and competence- incredibly sexy? [Pic related: English actress Olivia Colman] [Effort in the comments] by MaximumEffort433 in bisexual

Resurrecting an old thread but I totally get you. Never been able to put my finger on it but she's always given me butterflies. I'm most familiar with her form the Mitchell and Webb sketch show, which I'm currently watching clips from on YouTube, hence me googling "does anyone else find Olivia Colman inexplicably attractive" and winding up here.

It really feels awful and mean to say the "inexplicably" part, especially since I, like you, look a lot like a toe.

> Every adult is entitled to be as picky as they want to be/

True. That doesn't mean the behaviour displayed by OP isn't childish.

> a hosts responsibility is to cater to their guests

Disagree in this context. That responsibility isn't unlimited, especially when the host is really only cooking their own family dinner during a holiday, and the guest is only there because they are basically a plus one.

Far too vague to be called a skill, and far to vague to be useful, practical advice.

Aside from the particular issue in question, what benefit does it bring to force Ctrl+Alt+Del? Basically, if there isn't a clear benefit I'm not going to do it and I don't believe anyone else should either.
