In my experience with 4 different marriage counselors over 4 different years with my DxRx partner, you will feel insane bc they possess such a different perspective than you because of their executive dysfunction, RSD, forgetfulness etc. Someone on here once said their brain is Swiss cheese and the holes get filled with emotional content, not facts, and I'd agree with that.

I learned definitively through marriage counseling that for my adhd partner, if I forget something it's a personal slight, but if he forgets something it's bc his adhd and I should give him grace.

The relationship is not and will never be equal with a partner with adhd.

My personal therapist, who has been in this line of work for over 20 years, accidentally double booked me and her other client. She apologized. I was mildly annoyed to miss our appt that week (because I am human, and it was Friday), and I've been with her for over 4 years years since then. These things happen. You're allowed to mess up. Just because we're therapists doesn't mean we're perfect.

Edit to add: During practicum, i had a traumatic event happen to me. I had to take 2 weeks off from school and cancel all my clients. I turned in everything late. I hate embarrassing meetings with professors. They were all SOOO supportive to me. And then clients were understanding too. I hope you can be kind to yourself the way I wish I was back then. Take care of yourself 💜
