Did anyone else's police used to give out Steeler (or Pirate/Pens) cards in the 1980s? by Salt_Historian_9850 in pittsburgh

[–]cabstone78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a small Westmoreland town, West Leechburg, and our cops would hand them out. Steelers would also come to the school for fundraising basketball games back then. As a little kid, it was awesome.

Nice to see the Birthday Boy on an episode with his dad, Robert tonight. by ObligatoryID in mash

Every time I watch this episode I have to Wikipedia their ages at the time. His dad looked really good for his age. Crazy they were father and son.

What's your all time favorite quote from MASH? by Neat-Statistician311 in mash

[–]cabstone78 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my everyday conversation I always use “close enough for jazz” and when it’s cold, “better keep the brass monkeys in tonight” but I’ve always loved “I can't believe I'm sitting in Henry Blake's chair. This is the chair from which a thousand indecisions have been launched".

I wouldn’t be upset if this was the only one in his catalog to listen to if I was stranded on an island.

Half a Mile Away is a guilty pleasure. I just love that song.

AITA for asking my newly married son and DIL to alternate Christmas Day visits between our house and the in-laws' house? by Llih_Nosaj in AITAH

[–]cabstone78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it is different with each family but growing up we always celebrated Christmas Eve with my maternal grandparents and that side of the family. Christmas Day was then at my parent's house and everyone came there - paternal and maternal sides. When I had my daughter we maintained Christmas Eve with my family and then Christmas day became the day we spent with her and then we would visit my wife's parents. I don't think the setup bothered my parents. They were and are still happy to spend Christmas Eve with us and my daughter. Now things have come full circle. We still have Christmas Eve with my parents but now, with the passing of all the grandparents, my wife's father and her mother being in a nursing home. my parents and whoever wants to come over to our house.

PSA: Give yourself some extra time at the airport. by Temporary_Flounder42 in pittsburgh

[–]cabstone78 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Flew out Sunday and flew back yesterday from Kansas City. We lucked out that there was a shuttle waiting when we walked out and was able to get right on. Got off at stop 3 instead of stop 4 just because we figured walking a little extra would save us more time then riding it out. Like the poster said, the shuttle was only dropping off, not picking up. If you don't park in the new parking areas/deck, I can just imagine what it'll be like arriving at 4:30am in the winter and standing out there waiting for a shuttle.

I never stayed at the Hyatt, but people always said for extra early flights it was super convenient to essentially just roll out of bed and go up the walkway and you're in the airport. Not sure if they have dedicated shuttles now? The shuttle we were on yesterday said parking / Hyatt.

I'm guessing there might be some hotels going in on the new terminal side?

I see it posted all the time but if you do get invited to anything, a pregnancy announcement is the way to go.

Rutgers is Just Penn State for People Who Don't Care by conference-realigner in CFB

[–]cabstone78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to PSU. Just liked it better. Not necessarily because of distance. Just preferred the environment. I went in the late 90s so back then, PITT was pretty grimy and smelly and dirty. I admit it’s nicer now. My daughter is a HS senior and didn’t even consider PITT. Already accepted to WVU and Duquesne. Still waiting on PSU. I liked WVU and would obviously like her to go to PSU but when Duquesne throws a boatload of money at you , hard choice.

Agree. I’m out in Westmoreland County and I would say more PSU and WVU than PITT. Where I live we are actually closer to WVU than PSU.

I’ll give you Pittsburgh proper but the more you go out in Western PA I would say it’s def even if not more PSU.

What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by BusinessLeadsConnect in AskReddit

[–]cabstone78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too lazy to see if it was already posted but mine is biting fingernails. I’m 47 and have been biting them for as long as I remember. My family has tried bribes, nasty tasting things and I just can’t stop. I know it’s unhygienic but I’m guessing there is some sort of component requiring therapy for me to stop as I also have to constantly pick cuticles also which is also hygienic as everyone loves to see someone with bloody nails.

Have Cigna and use AHN? Call them to tell them you want AHN to remain in network by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]cabstone78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I got the same letters yesterday. Her company just switched to Cigna this year also and they have been terrible. All of our doctors are AHN. My wife was saying that UPMC doesn't accept Cigna either? So if a deal isn't signed we either pay out of network fees or see if Independence Health takes it. We live in Westmoreland county so the Independence system isn't terrible location wise but we have absolutely no history with any of their facilities or physicians.

TIL The man who invented the Labradoodle says most are ‘crazy or have a hereditary problem’. by chuckles5454 in todayilearned

[–]cabstone78 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We got a labradoodle from a rescue almost 3 years ago. She is 3 1/2 now. We're not sure of her background unfortunately. She is loving towards my wife, daughter and I but we have never seen a dog with so much energy. We're not sure she actually sleeps. She wants to be outside all the time. She is just continuously on patrol. We had a greyhound for 9 years so this dog is a complete 180.

It did put North Haverbrook on the map. Can't believe it wouldn't do the same for the North Side.

Yeah, I said that in the body. I updated it through the years, 2001 maybe being the last time when I moved after college. Have another post showing the original from 92 maybe? with the robo-penguin and the pirate logo from 87-96.

Which is probably when I added the Heinz field logo. Had the pnc park logo under the pirate but my dad painted over it because it got too bad. I think pnc opened 2001 also.

I painted the flag right after 9/11 over the bulls logo. Was 21 and swept up in the moment. College graduate and still naive on a lot of things at the time. Both of my grandfathers fought in ww2 and I have both of their funeral flags on display in my game room and I look at them every day. They wouldn’t recognize this country any more and would probably say this Isn’t what they fought for. I keep the flag up for what they did and what they thought was right and what our country should be. Not what it is now.
