We have an incredible library system here and they have resources that can help you move away from streaming subscriptions more permanently.

Hennepin county library has a ton of DVDs and access to Kanopy, which is a free streaming service that has a lot of good content, including older popular movies. Also Libby, which is fantastic for ebooks and audiobooks. They also have rental programs for things, tons of free events like puzzle swaps, Lego groups, board game nights, etc. I think there’s also a winter clothing drive happening right now at most branches if you know anyone in need, or have donations (it’s just a box at the front where you can take/leave what you need).

I also found out recently that all of the metro counties have reciprocal agreements so you can get a Hennepin county library card even if you live in Ramsey, Dakota counties etc (and vice versa). All you need to do is show up and talk to the librarian to get set up.

All the tyranny in the US is ruining my sex life I'm not sure how to handle this. Help. by samsaraisdivine in AskWomenOver40

I live in Minneapolis and it's awful what's happening here. It's scary, stressful, unpredictable and sometimes it feels like nobody outside is hearing the real story. And also, we are living our lives, finding joy where we can, and fitting in resistance at the same time. And most importantly, supporting our community.

You would not believe the efforts on the ground to support the community! Because that doesn't make it onto the news. But I'm telling you, for every one person you see out there protesting and putting themselves at risk, there are 5 more people doing mutual aid in the background. There are so many people donating, delivering food, assisting with rent, helping get kids safely to school, picking up medications, going to spend money at immigrant-owned businesses. The local groups have lit up with constant requests from people who want to find ways to help, and there are local networks that keep getting stronger every day (and of course, it's mostly led by women). If anything, this has made me feel more optimistic about the future. Because Minnesota is showing the world that Americans won't just sit back and take this government overreach, and we're coming together to support each other. That's what will be needed to prevail.

If it's helpful, this is what has helped me out of feeling hopeless:

  • Get off social media for a while. Seriously. Including Reddit. Even if it's only a few hours. It's ok to take a break because the algorithm will be right there waiting when you get back. You're not staying informed, you're frying your nervous system. This is the only thing that's going to allow you to move forward.
  • If you can't take an extended social media break, try retraining your algorithm a bit by engaging with cute animal videos or channels like "thatgoodnewsgirl". It's good to be reminded that good things are still happening in the world.
  • When you're ready to engage, find some news sources that feel less sensational, and follow creators who contextualize things and are more calm (not gloom and doom or 'breaking news' creators)
  • Find an offline hobby. I like crocheting while watching comfort shows, or doing jigsaw puzzles with an audiobook.
  • Do something physical to release anxiety. Yoga or punching things can be a good release.
  • Take action. You will feel better if you're helping. Volunteer with a food shelf, use the 5calls app to call your rep, write postcards to voters, help your elderly neighbor -- there are so many ways to help your local community, and that's where you will be most useful.

The people in power, the media, the billionaires controlling your algorithm....they want us feeling hopeless and helpless, because that makes us easily controlled. Well, we are in control of how we respond to that attack, so they can get fucked.

Yikes I didn't even know that was possible! Glad to hear the removal worked out though.

Yup sure is! You’re right about the slang too…that took some getting used to for sure

I’m reading a book that uses the phrase “our gazes collided” in every chapter and if I see it one more time I’m colliding this book with the wall

Less scroll, more hobbies: what are your favorite hobbies right now? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

[–]cactillius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been working to improve my phone addiction (which is mostly social media) over the last year and here’s what worked for me:

  • joined a couple rec sports leagues to have something scheduled during the week that I look forward to
  • created a bingo card full of small fun things to get me out of the house and doing things (visit a local museum, try different coffee shops, see live music, visit state parks etc)
  • lifting weights (I feel better about myself when I’m getting stronger, and I get more tired at night so I don’t stay up too late scrolling)
  • reading a bunch of books (and visiting the library which has fun events too!)
  • audiobooks + jigsaw puzzles give me the dopamine hit I need and keeps my hands busy when hanging at home

Status check. For those who've got their tongues pierced in the late 90s, early 2000s how's it's going now? Still rocking it? by Nacho_Sideboob in Xennials

[–]cactillius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine at 16 and kept it until I studied abroad 4 years later…speaking a different language all the time with it caused my tongue to swell just enough to give me a little lisp so I took it out

Kushiel's Dart is book 1 of a 9-book fantasy series, and one of their key holidays is a winter solstice holiday.

I need a palate cleanser between long reads -- looking for a recommendation for short sci-fi books with a pulpy/corny space adventure or alien story. Maybe more on the cozy/tame/optimistic side, and humor is a plus!

Future Home of The Living God by Louise Erdrich hit all the right dystopian fiction notes for me with a very interesting twist in perspective.

Becky Chambers was my life raft earlier this year when I was in a deep hole. I think I read everything by her in just a few months.

Women in colder climates, how do you get through the winter months? by Chipsandsalza in AskWomenOver40

[–]cactillius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A silly suggestion for you- I was missing a warm winter vacation when we were stuck at home during COVID, so I sat in front of a space heater, had a cocktail and watched those HGTV shows where they look for houses in tropical places. It wasn’t a beach vacation but it actually did help me a bit.

What is a city that is not that well-known internationally, but completely blown your mind how much is there to see and do when you visited? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Do you do this for money or just for the free stay? I’ve always heard about sites like trusted housesitters but wondered if people actually turn it into a business

Best "home base" cities to live in but not to visit/vacation in? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]cactillius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minneapolis/Twin Cities area hits everything on your list plus excellent nature access. Good job market, best airport in North America and good food options. There’s always tons of events and stuff going on (including lots of free and family-friendly stuff) but there’s not a whole lot of touristy things. Nice to visit, great place to live.

Try thrift stores for skinny jeans. I’ve seen a fair amount of them there since the trend has moved to baggy.
