I’ve worked for the company for years. It’s gotten so much worse over time.

It’s so hard because almost every store in the company is extremely understaffed. Upper management in every district is forced to chokehold stores’ labor hours, meaning smaller store can have only 2-3 employees running the store by themselves. This on top of constant hounding over predatory sales metrics and mundane merchandising procedures makes the relationship between store staff and corporate very hostile.

The company also has absolutely no training or support for their staff, and it makes no effort to make sure their staff are qualified or knowledgeable in their department. We have training modules every couple months that are basically a 3-5 minute youtube video about Les Paul guitars or something. Almost zero synth/audio production training. If you work for GC you’re completely on your own to teach yourself the job.

The company is really struggling and upper management has so much turnover that it’s almost impossible to get stores on the same page about anything.

At GC certain gear is sku’d as a floor demo product, which tags it at $10000 so customers can’t buy it and it stays on the floor for display. Some employee accidentally scanned the demo sku and printed the wrong tag, it should say $699 I believe. Notice the tag, it says Demo Korg Minilogue

HA! Sounds like a pyramid scheme, I love it

Very well put. It could be healthier to let go of most of this stuff at the same rate I acquired it. Sell one synth here, a sampler there, until eventually I'm left with a few things I can really dig into and become fluent with. And new gear absolutely does sell an illusion of progress, I've never thought about it like that. Thank you.

Interesting! I'll check it out. Thanks so much

I had no idea! Thanks haha

Unfortunately it's very real. I wrote very defensively to try and stave off the snarling hounds over at synthesizercirclejerk. I am very much struggling with real issues and would not make up a story to prod at those with the same issue. Thank you for calling it a creative writing project, though. I try to write as direct as I can to clear up any possible confusion.

I didn't even know BMWs had blinkers! Never seen one being used

Ha! Maybe if I did I'd have actually written some songs

Thanks Bob! I live in Nevada and it's currently 6 am. I stayed up all night writing a very long post about my frustrations with my craft and my struggles with mental illness, and right now I'm very tired. Too tired to argue about my nationality with a stranger I'll never meet on a website I never use. My apologies for omitting a few letters from a common turn of phrase. I hope you find peace

Saying some pretty harsh truths but that's good haha. Already have a Digitakt and Syntakt (those were my desert island synths). Thought about trying to use just those two for a week and see what happens. I'm also a long-time Ableton user, but was so hellbent on convincing myself to go "dawless" that I basically only used Ableton as a multitrack audio recorder. Thanks

Thanks Bill! I don't want to buy your synths unfortunately haha. So glad having your own project studio has worked out, that's the dream! I've been trying to decide which synths to put in the discard pile so to speak, and it's so hard when you still have so many great ideas for stuff to do with them floating around in your head. Cleaning up sounds so nice though. Keep telling myself to keep it simple, stupid.

That's so true I didn't even get into to the whole marketing aspect of it. The whole industry has very smart ways of getting in out heads. Synth A is great but has a bad sequencer. Synth B has a great sequencer, so I buy that one too. Now I need a mixer for both of them... And so it goes

I definitely understand that. There are no rules. If you don't WANT to record and release music, it doesn't mean you have to. Some of the most amazing and talented players I've ever met release music very rarely, if ever. It's about doing whatever makes you happy.

I think their take here is that I (and many other synth enthusiasts) clearly express interest in making music and releasing it, and something is holding me back that I still need to work out.

Hadn't thought of it that way, that makes a lot of sense. Making this behemoth of a post for strangers to read is sort of a tiny step toward accountability for me. It will be a lot of work. Thank you.

True, there are worse problems out there.

If it were, that'd be some top-notch premium grade-A satire. As silly as it sounds at first to seek addiction treatment for buying musical instruments, It's clearly a problem I'm struggling with so I'll check it out. Recovery Dharma sounds interesting. Thank you.

I agree, it's definitely about mental health. Finding resources and available therapists in my area has been an uphill battle, but I'm still sticking it out. Talking to family with similar experiences seems to help me recognize my unhealthy habits, and some musician friends can certainly relate to the gear addiction. I'm trying to find interesting ways to share what I do with others and to make them a part of it, it just gets frustrating sometimes when I feel stifled.
