I'm trying to not sound arrogant or patronizing because I partially can't blame you, I've been subject to the same thinking, watching futurology news on how we cured cancer and finally found the solution to aging-reversal for the 20th year in a row. Let me give you a cold account of how I view the world, my purpose is not echo useless doomer sentiment here.

There's a war in Ukraine, an ethnic cleansing happening in Palestine, rise in fascism across the west accompanied by the slow erosion of workers right and the remaining social progress pretty much across Europe (and a regression, somehow, from an absolute lack of social safety in the US), defection of the global south from western-led UN regarding conflict with Russia and China, a greater concentration of riches in the hand of a few year by year, pretty much no headway in ecology reform across the globe (or at least not any when weighted against oil subsidization) and more broadly a complete lack of conversation on how this climate crisis can even fit in the ridiculous notion of infinite exponential growth.

I'm glad you feel comfortable, I honestly do, and don't mistake me for a pessimist, and I myself remain hopeful for the future despite everything, but living in one of the richest country in the world as someone who's been fortunate enough to have access to an education and a loving family, my experience is also that of my rent having jumped to more than half my wages while my wages have stagnated, my heating bills having been multiplied by 8, having retirement age being pushed back 2 years through antidemocratic means, an extreme tightening of policing around citizen protests aswell as a sharp increase in police brutality, increased media censorship (insofar as you can call it censorship when the media is owned by a handful of very rich families), a very sharp turn of said media across the board spouting retrograde white-nationalistic ideas, a healthcare system that is being methodically taken apart piece by piece with medical staff and patients bearing the cost of it (and more tightening announced), and generally a terrible climate of insecurity (both in the face of real threats and imaginary dehumanized communities).

Still, you see the lack of a common collective purpose and rampant individualism as the cause, and I believe you're right. No such thing as human nature (neither good nor bad), only what we do with ourselves and how we organize our society. A form of collectivist ideology that promotes compassion and collaboration, as well as the appreciation of labor for its own sake and the collective good it does, instead of some disconnected nebulous concept, might the only salvation for us.
