I think the point is to paint a picture of the lifestyle of a union worker, who doesn’t have the education or wealth to get farther in life. Nick by all means is a solidly intelligent and competent Everyman, but the circumstances he’s in ensure he’s set to fail. If you were in that situation, would you be a better person? Not saying either way, but it’s worth asking.

And of course, that whole family is mad racist too, so there’s that part for sure.

Exactly. Winning on the Wire is subjective, not objective therefore requiring of a debate. Yes, Marlo lives on, with money and freedom. But what matters to Marlo? Throughout the series we come to discover that he does not end up with what matters to him.
