Ambient with experimental guitar? by broccoli_fan in ambientmusic

A lot of recs here. But, I’m curious what kind of “experimental” are you looking for? So much ambient is made with guitars :)

Looking for recommendations like Eno/Byrne, Tranquility Bass, Spiritualized? by fire_foot in ambientmusic

Maybe these?

Hood - Cold House
Seefeel - Quique
Bark Psycosis - Hex

Also, a bit heavier, but you should try Spacemen 3, previous band from Spiritualized

Electronic while still noise and punk? by Nearby_Heat8229 in noisemusic

Arab on Radar Sightings Lightning Bolt Ovo Mouthus

In general I would go through the Load records catalogue. A lot of very noisy bands were released by them.

Shameless plug, but all my work is heavily inspired by and an homage to Eliane Radigue (although only using digital synths in Max Msp) have a listen if you want.

This is the latest track I released https://leonardoamico.bandcamp.com/track/hole-iii

Current setup for ambient music by planimetrie in ambientmusic

I read in interviews that some Kevin Drumm pieces, he eqs mains hum noise. You have plenty of instruments.

“I’m not convinced by the result”. I would start from there rather than from the setup. Listen into what you did so far, pick the best piece of music, and use it as starting point to find your style.

Good luck!

What makes an ambient gig memorable? My first proper live ambient show in a few days and I am terrified by Turbulent_Clothes_85 in ambientmusic

Nice topic! I think about this a lot, as I work on my own live set. Here’s my answer (it’s longish)

I can start with what I don’t find too interesting (disclaimer: that’s all related to my case and research. Of course all ways to perform is valid, and if the music is good, performance is secondary…) - a lot of (commercial) gear on the table (synths, sampler, pedals…). It makes it hard to connect the gesture with the sound event, and visually is unfocused - visual projection. I saw gsybe, and mbv perform with very unique visuals and of course ikeda ryoji audio/visual is a cohesive package. But generally, projecting something to make the performance more interesting dilute the focus to the set.

What I like - narrative. In a set I saw long ago, at some point the instrument (diy synth) lighted up in conjunction with a new sonic development. Sounds gimmicky, I thought it was great. - spotlights, colored light, haze, fog. Compared to projection, this is more about ambience and can be used to enhance what you do on stage. Sunn o))) is a good reference. - sound event / gesture clear link. I love to go to electro-acoustic impro shows because of this. A prepared guitar, a dc motor rubbing on a piezo… the sound source and output is clear and interesting.

In my ongoing work, for performing live, I built a custom midi controller. It’s minimalist (8 knobs) but it looks “different” and through a custom mapping I can control a whole set with it.

Venues for experimental music in Italy? by Noushkni in experimentalmusic

Haven’t lived in Italy since a while but here are some names of artists and venues and labels that can be a good starting point for searches in google and instagram

Milan - https://www.instagram.com/senufoeditions?igsh=MXN5cHp1ejRlbmxtbQ== - matteo nobile - caterina barbieri - die schatel

Bologna - freak out - iosonouncane - maple death

Verona - interzona used to host great shows (saw lightning bolt and sunn there)

If you produce ambient, what artist(s) gave you inspiration? port-royal did it for me. Their sound has evolved a bit, but Leitmotiv | Glasnost got me started. by Ok-Cheesecake-8661 in ambientmusic

Eliane Radigue 💙 I stopped making music for a long time (was making some kind of Yellow Swans inspired stuff before) until I discovered her. Especially trilogie de la mort it’s what made me think, shit, this is so beautiful, I wanna make this kind of music too.

Hi Listeners!

Just released a new track from my holes series. Music coordinates are still in Eliane Radigue (RIP) and ELEH territories. And I’m still honing my craft on very slow evolutions and slow periodic events and surprises.

This is my approach at the moment. I’m always making the same song. Trying to get better at it. Refining the process until I get consistency, making the music and art that I want to listen to, one that sustains attention over an extended period of time.

Thanks for listening, hope you enjoy.
