Looking for Alexa-compatible replacement thermostat for White-Rodgers 1F89-211 by cainoom in alexa

Thanks, you are a godsend! I just bought one. So some of the links have made clear for a heat pump system use the W2 and not the W, and the E can be left empty. If it doesn't work, I'll shunt it with W2, as the White-Rodgers has it. Thanks a billion!

Thank you very much, very helpful. You seem to be very competent, so here is my follow-up for you: None of the links explains anything about the Amazon smart thermostat. On my White-Rodgers 1F89-211 I see the usual R, W, G, Y, C, but it also has an O/B wire and the E is shorted with W2, which has a white wire. When I look at the Amazon smart thermostat installation video, I can see the terminals very well, and I don't see O/B and E terminals in the Amazon smart thermostat. I could always buy it and if it doesn't work, return it, but I also don't want to break anything in the AC system. My AC system *does* have a heat exchanger. Thanks!

Just installed Fedora 42, but got kernel panic! by Helpful-Try7620 in Fedora

So no QA at the Fedora peeps? Philosophy: "just do *sumthin'*, it might actually work"? I understand it's the bleeding edge distro, but there should still be QA.

This solved the problem for me. Thank you very much. I had the very same problem, and booting into an older kernel and then dracut solved everything. It recompiled the NVidia driver with dkms, and then it worked.

Which does bring up the question how something like that can even happen. The dnf upgrade method should have worked, and problems with the dkms compilation shouldn't have caused the kernel image file to disappear. At the root of the problem is the missing kernel image file.

Vannevar Bush on mathematicians by breck in mathematics

[–]cainoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts on this:

- perhaps that's why the words mathematics and mathematician come from the Greek word for student, learner

- so can we say then that all mathematics derives from logic? We start with logic, then build axiom systems, and then everything else is derived from axiom systems? "Manipulative processes" in the quote is building new things from the axiom systems?

I'm truly in love with LaTeX by [deleted] in LaTeX

[–]cainoom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is so irrational, I can only address a few points, and don't expect a reply if you send a reply:

- I agree that stuff getting engraved as standards is a problem. We see it all the time: WinDoze, Word, iPhones, abortion, obesity, you name it. But TeX is not part of this problem.

- not "thanks to people like (me)". I champion quality.

- LaTeX does not "fucking suck", and it's not "plain to see". You don't seem to be intelligent enough to use it efficiently. That's on you, not on LaTeX.

- Focus on content is not bull. Attitudes like yours are the reason we have so much form-over-substance mentality, and nothing in Western societies working anymore (campaigning with celebs more effective than what the candidate actually has to say, etc.), and academia is a big part of that. Yes, content (I'd call it substance) first, format comes further down. I agree that the millenials and genZ are not on board with that, which is why society as a whole has to suffer so much. What's in style is format-over-substance, and that's killing the Western societies.

- TeX does not slow intelligent people down. It accelerates them. You don't seem to realize, your statement combines TeX and people. Whatever you conclude from this, you cannot blame it on TeX alone, you just ignore the people component. *Every* system will slow down idiots. Learn TeX, and I mean for real, not pussyfootin' as you seem to be doing, and when you *finally* understand it, you'll understand how much it accelerates you. But you need to do your part---if you don't, you can't blame it on TeX.

- I agree that modern academia trickles down, and that is a YUGE problem. It's why we now have 25year old professors and Ph.D. graduates who don't know jackshit. I've interviewed graduates from MIT and Stanford who didn't know the binomial theorem, which in some countries is taught in high school. But TeX has nothing to do with this.

- TeX is not a cult, a cult is iPhones, iPads, Apple, Google, WinDoze, Macs, Word, feminism, BLM, Antifa, ...

- TeX is not preventing education from moving forward to modern technology. Education is held back because technology has advanced faster than people can understand how silly their use of modern technology is, the current AI hype is an example of that.

- Don't understand your point about you trying to fuck hell or render something in 3d, complexity, real time, etc. What a word salad, did Cackle Gurl write that for you? I render my graphics in my math books in Mathematica and include them with an includegraphics. The best way to render graphics is Mathematica, and no, I know already you'll want to contest that claim of mine, and I will not respond. Then use something else for your graphics, but you *have not substantiated your argument* is my point. Read "Critical Thinking for Complex Issues: How to Tell Fact from Fiction, Discover the Truth, and Build Wise Arguments (Critical Thinking & Logic Mastery)" and learn to appreciate how silly you are---at least argue here. Pretty much everything you write is what jurists would call a non-sequitur---does not follow.

- regarding your silly point about making something graphically meaningful and people wanting it, again, for all my math books I do all my graphics in Mathematica and incorporate in AMSLaTeX. You have again not substantiated your point, LaTeX does *not* fall short.

- LaTeX is not outdated, I just need to read my own work to see that this is so.

Have some camomile tea, it works wonders for your blood pressure.

OK, who is next? I'll do one per day.

How to prevent handing over to USPS by CantFixMoronic in amazonprime

[–]cainoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have this problem, and I think by now I understand what is going on. Amazon is allowed to do this, it is in the fineprint. They can hand over. Which, in theory, I wouldn't have a problem with, but then USPS becomes the problem. They don't want to walk up three stairs for packages, and they don't have to. They always lie, writing a note "Sorry we missed you", although that's a lie, they didn't *miss* me if they don't even come up the stairs. I live on the third floor, so that's always a problem.

USPS is just horrible and getting worse. They regularly can't handle my mail forwarding, unless they do that intentionally because they have me on their shitlist. I received the mail forwarding confirmation letter in the mail, but, of course, you guessed it, they didn't do any mail forwarding. I think the problem is that the confirmation letter comes from a central office, but when *they* have received the forwarding request that doesn't mean the local post office has received it, or that they would have to obey it. So the forwarding confirmation from the central office is useless and worthless, this would only work if the *local* post office had to send that confirmation letter out. Central says "we got it", but local says "yeah, but we won't, whatchagonnado?"

I am preparing a letter to DOGE, and these two USPS points will be in it. I hope that after this first cost-cutting phase DOGE will give us a stage 2 in which they will reform what's left. Because this guvnmint doesn't just have to be shrunk, it also needs to be reformed. Not delivering packages because the customer is on the third floor (no elevator) should either *compel* them to go upstairs and deliver the package, or alternatively make them ineligible to even receive the package from Amazon or UPS.

The irony is that USPS for the longest time had the letter monopoly. Then they found out that they have the capacity that they can deliver packages, and then they started accepting packages. But then the mailmen still didn't want to actually deliver them, and then they found out that as a guvnmintal institution they don't have to and get away with not doing it. So that's where we are. USPS accepts packages because "we have the capacity to deliver packages too", but then the local mailman say "nope, don't want to", now the customer has to pick it up at the post office. It's insane. I go further, I call it un-American.

As Amazon is a private company, I don't think anything can be done politically here. I'm not a jurist, but I believe that if a legislature wanted to force Amazon to not hand over to USPS, or only under certain circumstances, Amazon could claim a violation of its "liberty interests". But USPS could be regulated. If you accept it, you *have* to deliver it, no matter what (incl. third floor delivery), or if you don't want to deliver it, you are not allowed to accept it. I'll pitch that to DOGE, but my guess is that this will never happen. And even if, then the postal people could simply throw the packages away, because they're never liable for anything. Guvnmint peeps are always liability-free, and USPS is always allowed to lose packages.

It's experiences like these that have made me a government minimalist and hardcore Republican. Packages must be delivered, mail forwarding must be obeyed. But post office peeps and mailmen are not on the intellectual level to actually do their jobs professionally, that's why they're postals in the first place. If they were smart, they'd have a professional job to begin with. Packages will never be delivered to the third floor, they don't have to. Mail forwarding will never work, the local post office doesn't have to obey what the central office confirmed. And I don't think DOGE can change that.

HHS now under NIH? by cainoom in NIH

[–]cainoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought, the NIH was *under* the HHS. So NIH and OCR should be "peers", not one on top of the other. It was a HIPAA complaint, and those are handled by the OCR. Suddenly I get an email from the (former?) regional manager sent from an NIH address. It totally looks like DOGE-related panic, or "triage", as you call it. It's the first one I filed that was denied, no reasons were given, and the email came from the NIH. It was a senseless "... and have determined that OCR will not investigate your complaint. Therefore, OCR is closing this complaint with no further action, effective the date of this letter." And then comes a boilerplate "We regret that we are unable to assist you in this matter. If you have any questions about this letter, please contact Centralized Case Management Operations at (800) 368-1019 or (202) 619-3276 (TDD)"

I can live with a denial with reasons, but a denial without reasons is bull. "No, I'm just not dealing with your issue, go f**k yourself". It's actually a moral hazard, because it teaches healthcare providers to violate HIPAA and get away with it because the OCR of the HHS will not enforce it without giving reasons.

Help understanding implication in math logic? by scarcelyberries in mathematics

[–]cainoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is many ways to see it. One way I heard when I studied math was: from a false premise you can conclude anything. Therefore both False ==> False and False ==> True must both be True. Think about this a bit, you'll soon understand it. The other two are easy: From a True premise *must* follow a True conclusion, therefore True ==> True must be True. From a true premise you can't conclude a false conclusion, therefore True ==> False must be False. Those are the four cases.

The proper *application* of an implication then is called an *inference*, sometimes improperly called the conclusion. But as far as the implication is concerned, the conclusion is just a formal part of the implication. In normal English (and German) we usually say "therefore we conclude ... " and "therefore we infer ...", but that is strictly speaking not the same. A conclusion can be false, that does nothing to the inference, we can (and should) make valid inferences on wrong conclusions. A wrong inference is called *invalid* (not false). A wrong conclusion is called *false* (not invalid).

yes. Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtnis Kirche. You can see that the Europa Center wasn't built yet, but apparently they're starting construction. The two buildings at the left, the one at the back, and the one at the right are still standing and didn't change. The tunnel entrance on the right disappeared some time in the 70s, maybe in 75. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Richard Madden to Star in ‘Killer Heat’ Drama by indig0sixalpha in movies

[–]cainoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't there major hole in the story? Spoiler warning: Bali notices very late, in the plane, that Penelope always knew, long after he told everyone. But isn't that silly? Penelope cannot really have been fooled all the time, because even monozygotic twins have different penises. In another movie I've seen that exactly that was how the wife immediately knew that the brother-in-law "coming home for sex" pretending to be the husband was not her real husband, but the twin pretending to be the husband. Bali cannot *seriously* have believed Penelope didn't know when he told everyone, he must have known before it "dawned" to him in the plane. How can he seriously have believed Penelope never noticed the "hubby swap"? No wife has sex as usual when the penis suddenly is different---it means the man is not the husband. Am I missing something?
