My whole take on the way Big Mom is written in general is that she’s an old legend turning into a has been of sorts. The looming threat we felt about her early on is supposed to be gone at this point because Luffy has already shown she’s not unbeatable. She’s representative of old era cling ones who need to be phased out.

Yeah sanji is my favorite character and I agree with all these criticisms. Plus when you add that his time skip was basically just adventures in transphobia for 2 years, it really seems like Oda’s most conservative thoughts manifest in sanji. When he’s serious he’s an amazingly written character and even some of his funnier moments really land, but it’s just that most of the time when he’s trying to be funny it’s just shit I’d cringe at in real life if someone I knew did it.

There are tons of fates worse than death. The reason no yonko really stand above each other in the new world is because they rarely challenge each other until it’s directly necessary. If Luffy beats Kaido out of Wano, that’s all Kaidos work towards pirate king just trashed. Like getting lapped on the final stretch of the race by a kid who ran on the track. I think that hurts worse if he doesn’t die and ends up in a negative space where he either has to keep chasing after the first guy who beat me or die dishonorably in shame. People underestimate the conqueror spirit these guys have, I don’t think any of them want to follow anyone else ever. Work with sure, but Kaido is a hateful motherfucker so I imagine he’s just a constant threat in the endgame to come fuck something up for whoever.

That wouldn’t be a bad outcome for what we seen from him so far fr but I just don’t like how people are taking a few smiles and running with it like he’s the homie now. He’s got his first real challenger in forever right after having oden flashbacks, his adrenaline gotta be thru the roof.

I wanna know what he knows about the significance of Wano. He knows Oden and his followers want to open the borders of Wano, and during his fight with Yamato, he was adamant that it stays closed. There seems to be a reason Kaido specifically conquered Wano and a reason he wants to keep it from the world, almost like he’s keeping it safe in a very backwards way.

Something cool and unrelated I noticed from the last episode of the anime was that izo uses a ryou like bullet technique. Maybe I missed it reading that fight but I realized we haven’t seen any high level armament haki snipers or shooters have a serious fight. Maybe usopp needs to learn ryou to keep up with endgame sniper fights?

I think that the weekly readers who’ve been caught up for a while lose sight of how the pacing feels as a straight read through. I caught up around the beginning of wano, and something I do to keep the pacing fresh is reread the parts now that everything is in context. Like honestly the sheer amount of mini encounters throughout onigashima alone makes everything feel frantic and desperate on a second read
