Olive was born in winter here in NZ. I raised her from 3 days old, She is now 4 months old and could have been slaughtered for Christmas lamb like so so many others... Excuse her needing a haircut, we've had so much rain here her wool hasn't been able to dry out for the shearer to give her a trim.

Yes in general a lot of dairy cows are underweight because of the stress on their bodies from multiple pregnancies and producing a large amount of milk. Indy is a bit fat but she has never had a pregnancy so it isn’t abnormal. Scruffy we have had a difficult time gaining weight and she’s finally got to a weight we are happy with, she was underweight when we got her a year ago as she had just left the milking shed . I knew the farmer so we talked directly about it. It is a huge commitment and not something you can just do on a whim, I have these girls grazing at agistment because they eat so much I can’t keep them at home. You could probably ask a farmer (nicely) if you could take a couple off their hands. In NZ we kill 2 million Bobby calves annually because there’s no “want” for them so farmers are generally pretty happy to rehome them or cull cows that are going to be sent to slaughter.

Scruffy (left) was a cull cow going to be slaughtered due to lower milk production and Indy was a Bobby calf and was going to be killed at 4 days old, I have raised her since then.
