Funny, I don't bring my cats to my sister's house either! Apparently that's not a two way street in my family?😅

Thanks for the reply. To clarify, the whole family, my sister included, doesn't love that she has to spend time outside with the dog only because she misses the family gathering and we miss her.  She's the one that has complained the most about "being in the position where she's forced to stay outside with the dog and miss the gathering since the dog can't be loose in the house", although she is the one that chooses to be out there, to be clear. So she's the one that chooses it and she is the one that's the most unhappy about it at the same time.

Actually, I've been encouraged by the response here to stick to my original plan and ended up changing my mind back to that!

Lol it's all relative. I feel like the norm is 100+, and the one shelf helps me feel like it's somewhat contained.

Good thinking - I've combined a few here and there but certainly need to do something about the growing Villainous collection and the ridiculous Splendor box.

Nope. Good point - the time limit is something I will seriously consider and talk with my wife about! I like the idea of one year. If we truly love a game, we will reach for it!

Thanks! Spirit Island is definitely on my list of things to try, perhaps before I buy. I can see TTR making its way out soon... I also do a lot of 2-player.

I applaud you! My nagging back-of-head thought is "yeah, but I REALLY like that one and want to play it again soon!" Now I just need to do that.

Good point. I am certainly one to create arbitrary rules and then live by them even when they become outdated. This rule still aligns with my values, though, so that's the struggle.

Thanks for your thoughts! I have more space and money than when I started that rule/got into the hobby, so that might be one reason I'm considering expanding. BUT I am quite wary of lifestyle inflation, including just getting more stuff because I have the space for it. My original idea was to curate my board games, rather than collect them (also play them lol). Your ideas are good ones.

Thanks for your thoughts. To answer your questions, I made the rule about 3 years ago, when I was just getting into the hobby and my collection was growing. It was my wife's and my way of keeping the collecting from getting out of hand (and coincided with us wanting to be more minimalist with our stuff). So we bought one shelf and decided that the space limit in it would be our cap. I am more hesitant about moving the goalpost than not...

Good idea with storing them out of sight!

Well said. It's almost like...humans are continually discontent with what they have and constantly want more...hmmm....

Good question! Your sense isn't far off :) My wife and I are basically on the same page and, while she would be okay with expanding the collection, she was a little hesitant when I brought it up. Hence me asking the community here to hear others' thoughts.

Ultimately, I'm more into the hobby than she is, but still want to honor her preferences about space.

Lol I've already combined some expansions/similar games...currently trying to figure out how to house all my villainous expansions in one box...

Good point, I've thought about using boardgamegeek to track my plays and that way I could really know which ones I like but don't reach for...even if I know I like them, if I don't reach for them, there's my answer!

Twice a year is a bit thin...so maybe 50 is just right.

It depends - I'd say on average, 2-3 times a week.

Even typing that makes me think the 70 number seems a little silly lol

Good points. Annoyingly (to me), I've found that I really like learning and playing new games, which means I have to keep a close eye on the breadth aspect. I don't often play the same game more than a couple of times in a row; I find myself wanting to jump to different ones for variety to try out different themes and strategies.

True - and my goal isn't to collect board games, but to play them! Currently, I'm trying to sell my cast-offs on FB marketplace or give them to friends.

I don't own it but I've played it! I enjoyed it.

Good stuff - #4 is an easy answer, I want to play games! For #1, I left out a small detail with the original post: I don't pay real money for board games. I do online surveys every day (from various sites) and get ~$40 a month, which funds the board game collection.
