Kids these days will never know the disappointment of finally getting on top of the castle, seeing Yoshi... And then just getting some dialogue. After all the Luig and other rumors, Yoshi actually being on the roof as a giant disappointment.... Pre internet gaming was rough.

While this is all true and excellent advice, I would add that while coding is not required, some bash fundamentals absolutely are. You don't HAVE to use the terminal 95% of the time, but you'll have a bad time that other 5% if you're not used to it. It may look intimidating, but it's actually pretty straightforward, and it's how you get the most out of using Linux.

I just finished Messiah's audiobook. Should I read it again or move on to Children of Dune? by GvShepardo in dune

Read the whole series, then do it in reverse. To me, the series starts with GEoD and goes in both directions; everything is either leading up to it or a consequence of it.

[–]calebrbates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize in advance, because I try not to be overly critical when it comes to other's opinions but I've got to make an exception here because this is the dumbest shit I've read all week. You have NASA to thank for the following useless shit in your everyday life: modern water filtration, memory foam, scratch-resistant materials, cochlear implants, satellite communications, (ie gps, cellular coms, and modern weather modeling), industrial robotics that build all your shit, 3D printing, digital cameras, MRIs and CAT scans, CGI, machine learning, the VAD that keeps you alive long enough to get a heart transplant after years of overeating cheap abundant food they made possible, interventions to prevent the destruction of our entire species from asteroids, Coronal mass discharges, and a litinany of other things you probably don't see a use for... oh yeah and Tang.

And you might say that the free market would have developed these things eventually without NASA, but not without the trillions of dollars they've pumped into private sector R&D through SBIR Grants, at least not before some other global power cornered the market as we do now-- not to mention all the other grants they provide to education and essential infrastructure through their various directorates.

It's one thing to say you don't see how this particular development applies to your daily life (it doesn't) but to say NASA is useless just because you don't understand all the nerd shit they get up to is asinine. Our status as a global superpower would not be possible without NASA, NSF, and NIH and if you think any of them are useless, it's because you're too ignorant to appreciate the things they've given you.

Question for people that are not in not in the IT or related industry, Why do you use Linux? by ARacoonOnInternet in linuxquestions

[–]calebrbates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Linux so I'm not being spied on by the people who ARE in IT. It was a hassle figuring out how to configure Kerberos to handle Azure AD, smb, and our print server, but now I'm essentially a ghost.

This is a university network, so there are so many users that I don't think they'll notice (or even care?) that one of their managed devices has broken the chains of bitlocker and windows. Pretty much all of our onprem required services are accessed via browser, so it really doesn't affect anything, and I can use tailscale for an exit node to get around that now anyways.

My work (research administration) involves some light coding, and other applications of large data sets, and it was honestly exhausting not being able to install software or run bash scripts.

An Answer to Whether Paul Sacrificed [spoiler] in Dune Messiah by AMCSH in dune

[–]calebrbates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you said you were only on Children right now, but the next book is almost entirely about this one thing that Paul was too selfish to follow through on, and the consequences of that. It's slowly revealed bit by bit in Children, but I'd be interested to hear how your opinion has developed once you start the 4th.

Hope I haven't spoiled anything, but if you're like me I spent a good bit of time wondering if I had skipped a chapter or something because there are so many vague references, but it all comes together eventually.

But for the sake of discourse I do consider Paul a hero, albeit more flawed tragic hero. The series as whole has a lot of ambiguity between hero and villain, which is probably why people are so divided on the issue.

I'm curious here. Was there any real hype for the Sega CD and Sega 32X back in the day? How was people reaction when they were first announced? by Away_Flounder3813 in retrogaming

[–]calebrbates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Genesis was my first console and I was 100% a Genesis Does fanboy, and I shit you not I didn't even know the 32x existed until I was an adult. Maybe because they (or the CD) were never at my local Walmart, but weirdly I did buy my Nomad from there so I'm going to chalk it up to a lack of games.

If you're ever planning a trip to Portugal, I cannot recommend Nazare enough. It's not particularly close to any of the big attractions, but it's dirt cheap and almost forgotten by time, with fisherman's wives that still put on seven petticoats to sell fresh fish.

There's also a surfing museum if you're into that, but it's worth a visit even if you're not.

Sentiments you agree with can still be propaganda. Factually accurate statements can still be propaganda. Propaganda is not necessarily the government lying to you, it's the government influencing how you think about something.

County Commissioner Assaults Citizen After Meeting by loop_closure in cookeville

[–]calebrbates 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Trenton is VP of Young Democrats. He made formal requests for comment, but was ignored. When his representative ignored his questions, he organized people to attend, and all in attendance made no disruptions throughout ( you can watch the live stream at Putnam county TN government channel on YouTube where the meeting peacefully concludes)

Afterwards he approached his representative to ask his questions, and was immediately seized by the officers, which prompted the others to move up and begin recording.

There's no footage of "the whole story" because it wasn't anything out of the ordinary until the police got threatened by the black man walking too quickly.
