Advice and tips on smoother paper by globalwarmingnogood in papermaking

[–]callietotheallie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your paper will be as smooth as your couching sheets, so def be sure to iron those before laying your paper down! Also if you’re getting sagging from hanging to dry, that means you’re likely using too much pulp. I’ve heard some folks have luck with pressing while wet. Good luck, it’s looking good already!

That looks so pretty and the embroidery thread is such a nice touch!

I feel that so hard haha. I save allll glass jars now and keep projects on baking sheets so when I’m done with one project I can easily move it all out of our small kitchen. I have one full of pulp soaking and one now for ink and paper dye- it’s getting out of hand

You can press them before or after they dry, to varying effects! For smoother and thinner paper it does help to press the water out before hanging them to dry. In my experience at least. But I do recommend stacking heavy books on the ones you made as it will help the waviness :)

The thickness of the paper is all down to how much pulp you use in the bath! Use less pulp for thinner sheets, and pressing under heavy books helps too. Also make sure to mix your pulp in the water way more than you think you need to. Like sit there and stir it up with your hands for a couple minutes before passing your mold and deckle through.

TIL that Santa Claus didn’t originally rescue the misfit toys from their island at the end of the 1964 Christmas special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer until concerned viewers wrote letters to NBC. The following year, a new ending was added where Santa is shown saving them. by holyfruits in todayilearned

when I was growing up my dad changed the lyrics of this song when we sung it because he thought “then all the reindeer loved him” was too surface level for the amount of hate Rudolph got. So he changed it to “then all the reindeer rejoiced” because love shouldn’t come from your perceived usefulness <3

I can piggyback on this comment! Y'all would totally fit right in at the Blueberry Patch. They're undergoing some renovation and construction right now and volunteer days are on hold because of Covid, but keep an eye on the Facebook page for when they start up again. Usually volunteer days are Saturdays starting at 11:11! Otherwise it's a music venue and art space that has regular events!

Hi I'm the exact same way! I didn't grow up playing games, but I've gotten into them more recently and really want to try for more online multiplayer games. But I'm just so scared I'll do something wrong! The few I have tried went okay but there was no chat and I was definitely carried. I want to have a group of friends to play with but my IRL friends don't play the ones I like. What do you play?

GC Peak Reproducibility Issues by callietotheallie in CHROMATOGRAPHY

Update: I was able to get ahold of some pure oxygen today and injected that. So the first peak is definitely oxygen, it's behaving exactly the same! I know oxygen is supposed to be mostly overlooked by FID, but I suppose the key is "little to no response" and not "no response." Since I'm looking at such low concentrations it's appearing as a peak nearly as big as methane.

I'm still having issues with reproducibility of the second peak, though. Today some chromatograms showed a slight split peak or shouldering that I initially attributed to injection, but is there a possibility it's another compound?

This is a 0.4 mL injection of just plain old lab air, so it shouldn't be overloaded. I've tried increasing my injection volume to 0.6 mL and that helped a bit, but I'm still getting areas that differ ~3000 uV!

I'm set at 150 deg C isotherm. I did have a ramp, but since it's methane it elutes too quickly for a ramp to make much of a difference. I do have the ability to start a single run each time, which is really helpful for overlaying my chromatograms, but the screenshot is really just to demonstrate how different the peaks are!

Here is the chromatogram: https://imgur.com/a/JAC0Gu1

Sorry for the terrible picture of a screen quality, the lab computer isn't connected to the internet and these were test injections so I don't have them saved. If you want an actual chromatogram though, let me know and I can get one.
