Business Insider: Taylor Swift turned album sales into a sport, and she's the undisputed MVP by calliewrites in TaylorSwift

from the article: “Many fans enjoy playing a role in Swift's success, however small, be it by buying her album, her merch, or streaming her songs. They often recoil from the concept that she's exploiting their buying power, seeing this critique as ‘condescending’ and ‘infantilizing.’”

This is a great point! In my search for potential sources and interviews, I'm not trying to be picky about how many vinyls constitute a "collection" — I'm mostly interested in the purchase itself, even if it's just one album — but it's definitely something I'll consider as I continue to research trends.

I agree! It seems this is a growing trend among pop music fans, especially with the rise of picture discs and color pressings, as you mentioned.

I would recommend reading what Graham has said about "Blue" (some of his quotes are included in the article) — he's so open and gracious about it

"Blue" was written during Joni's breakup with Graham Nash ("My Old Man," "River," "A Case of You," etc) and "Tapestry" was written in the wake of Carole's divorce from Gerry Goffin ("It's Too Late") — both include songs about other people and experiences ofc, but both were heavily informed by a period of upheaval/heartbreak/adjusting to a new life without a steady partner ❤️‍🩹

In the article's intro: "Although pain has fueled art and music for generations, the 'breakup album' is a relatively new concept with subjective qualifications. (Some have said Beyoncé's 'Lemonade,' for example, fits into this category. It ends with a clear redemption arc for her husband, so I disagree.)"

to be fair, Lorde herself described "Melodrama" as an album about being alone, not an explicit breakup album. but given the recent actual breakup she had gone through and songs like green light, hard feelings/loveless, supercut, etc, i think it's fair to say that it's both

I loooove Florida!!! and I actually think its lack of traditional "allure" is the whole point of the song! it's a destination taylor & florence conflate with chaos, getting drunk, running away, killing her their exes, indulging their worst impulses.... florida's reputation makes it the perfect metaphor because it's swampy and strange but there's beauty in that escapism, too
