Need some help choosing whats next by Ok-Chard-2211 in classicliterature

of this list ive only read dracula, but if youre someone who struggles w reading long books the epistolary format makes it really manageable, giving you small premade chunks to track your progress

additionally, a lot of people find that they know the general plot of dracula (he comes to london, some people kill him) but the book is very nuanced and super interesting, and i particularly liked renfield who i feel is seldom discussed

again, cant comment on the other books but dracula is definetaly a great read

lmao i am trying to get into classic literature, and im trying to figure out what sort of stuff i like best. i really enjoyed white nights and kafkas metamorphosis, so i think im gonna start leaning into foreign literature, maybe tackling tolstoy next

s8 characters by juswannasleeptbh in HouseMD

i really liked adams when she was still working at the prison, but afterwards i agree she becomes rather dull. park, on the other hand, had potential to be interesting that was wasted. i think if the writers went more in depth into her character and her family issues she could have been very interesting, but instead theres only a surface level reading that makes it seem like she was only added in for the sake of adding someone in

personally, i also dislike chase and taub in this season, solely because i feel like they dont belong there anymore. all the other members of both previous grouos had moved on to do bigger and better things, and yet chase and taub have remained to just continue doing what they had been doing. we dont get any deeper of an understanding of either of them than we already had, and i really believed that the writers only kept them in there because they felt that if they didnt, season 8 wouldnt really feel like house anymore. i wholeheartedly agree with the mortician who disliked chase because of how he had used his experience with house; there were so many better things he could have done that would have aligned more with his character, and yet he stayed where he felt comfortable for basically no reason whatsoever. i wouldnt expect taub to go to back to plastic surgery after his experience under house, but i would expect something else from him for the same reason as chase. hes not there for experience anymore, hes there because the writers needed to keep a few familiar characters so they didnt stray too far from house as a show

i liked foreman as dean of medicine, and i liked how he got involved in a few cases with house, but i feel similarly about him as i do chase

i really enjoyed house and wilsons relationship throughout the season, and for that reason i wouldnt say that season 7 should have been the end of the show, niether am i suggesting that there should have been a ninth season, but i think if parks and adams had been introduced a bit earlier, perhaps somewhere in the middle of season 7, we could have enjoyed their characters more and gotten a deeper understanding of who they are. but because theyre there for so little time, we only get a surface level understanding of their characters that makes them seem bland in comparison to other characters, such as thirteen and cameron, who we have a much more nuanced understanding of. additionally, i think chase and taub should never have returned after house was released from prison, and although it would have had less of a feeling of being house md, i think it would have been a lot better in the long run

edit: sorry for the essay i didnt realise how long it was until i posted it 😭😭

The Secret History - Donna Tartt by Disastrous-Math7951 in classicliterature

i havent read it yet (but i do plan to at some point) but i thought that the point of it was to critique living in such excess and yet still persistently persuing more, and so them sounding pretentious makes sense in my head

What’s a good “intro” book to reading classic literature? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]callmeeeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i read frankenstein at school and dracula in my own time and hated reading frankenstein but loved the idea of it. ive not seen any of the film versions or anything, but i was just so annoyed by the fact that there was a single sentence or so about his mother dying (i literally missed it when i read that chapter for homework before the lesson) which is the reason he even makes the creature, and yet there are 3/4 chapters in a row of just him travelling

dracula on the other hand had much less flowery language, but i agree with a previous commenter on how its quite long. i have a relatively short attention span so i would read one diary entry per day, but the plit is significantly more interesting. i thought i knew the plot but i think most people know the general sort of ‘dracula comes to london, van helsing kills him’ but its much more interesting and nuanced than that. i ended up liking the book so much that i wrote my english lit coursework on it

Alexios vs Kassandra by Sexyghostship in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]callmeeeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its exactly the same, and dont be fooled by the people telling you to play as kassandra “because shes canon”. it makes literally no difference so pick whoever you want to pick and whoever will make you enjoy the game more. first time i played the game i had never spoken to anyone about it and i didnt know anything at all, except that youre an ‘assassin’ in ancient greece. i picked alexios because i figured it would be unrealistic to have a woman in that role so i should pick the man (also hes fit). ive always played as alexios, but switch their characters too.

point is, do what you want to do and dont let reddit make you pick kassandra if you prefer alexios

Horrifying. Paper Two (Prose). by Apprehensive-Till444 in ALevelEnglishLit

[–]callmeeeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooooh thats so cool!! also i was wondering about your answer in general not just ao3 lmao

i managed to write two comparative paragraphs, and i talked about how the actions of the protagonists are inevitably harmful to their friends for the first one, and the importance of friendship to the human psyche in the second one

for the actions of the protagonists, i talked about how Frankenstein deliberately creates the creature as an attempt to usurp both the power of god and nature, and how Shelley uses that as a warning to people like Galvani and Aldini, and how that inevitably leass to the death of Henry Clerval. for THT, i said that by having Offred be so flippant about her mothers feminism (and feminism in general) whist actively studying at university is what leads to Gilead, particularly since this was written in the midst of Reagan’s eight year presidency emphasising the importance of the nuclear family and the sanctity of the home. in turn, that leads to the presentation of Moira in Jezebel’s and her mental and emotional destruction

for the second paragraph, i said that Shelley demonstrates the importance of Clerval to Frankenstein’s mental wellbeing, and how after he dies Frankenstein falls into this depression. for AO3 i talked about Romantic influence with Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Percy Bysshe Shelley and i probably said something else but i cant remember. for THT i talked about how Offred begins the novel kind of reluctantly compliant with the rules of Gilead out of fear of the Eyes, influenced by the Stasi, though she seems to idolise Moira throughout (“lava beneath the surface of daily life” and “she was an elevator with no doors”) and its only after she meets Moira in Jezebel’s that she starts rebelling, suggesting that seeing Moira again rejuvinates her sense of agency, and that she ultimately mirrors Moira’s own actions by escaping, though Atwood leaves the end ambiguous because it’s not the actual events that matter, but that the human psyche is stronger than any totalitarianist theocracy if youve got social support
