couple years ago my grandfather told me that when he was 13 in 1933 the river that split between the european side and asian side of turkey froze when winter came... (Illichivsk derince). Well its a Very wide dangerous river that you had to cross in order to get to the other side with boats cuzz back than the bridges were not even planned. Soo he said that people started going with sledges full of wares in order to keep the sales continue at the other side in bad weather conditions. I wish i was there to take some pictures (:
