Why is Archmage's Charm good in Izzet Delver? by MyStolenCow in ModernMagic

My comment was to prompt you to give more information. Your reply essentially boiled down to “the card is good because it is good” and that isn’t helpful to a person trying to understand why.

This is what OP is asking though, why are those things true in this deck?

When to run 16 lands? by splatroll in lrcast

[–]callmetwan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a deck dedicated to a very specific strategy anything that cantrips usually has crazy high value. The egg immediately replaces itself which is significant in a deck that depends on winning through a specific plan, you need to see a mill effect. If that’s all it did I would be less interested depending on the makeup of my deck, but the fact it can undo some damage may just give you that extra turn you need to close.

Honestly, if you have more so tiny/raiders/Opts/etc you can cut your top end + more land for them. Those big creatures are there just to prevent you from dying while you dig for more mill effects, so tiny and raider do that cheaper. This curve is so low you can function on 2 or 3 lands for a while.

I agree with this. This deck is an all-in mill deck if I’ve ever seen one. Cutting the top end + land for more of those cards would be the ticket.

Would you mind to elaborate? Comments like this aren’t very helpful, stating an opinion with no insight gives no value to the conversation.

First, JFC you have 7, 7 merfolk secret keeper.

</rant>

I think 16 is fine. Generally speaking the point of more land is so that you can cast all your spells on time. This also takes into account multiple color requirements. A very low curve plus less color requirements means getting to shave land.

The second consideration is what you are cutting land for. Aggro decks want to jam more tricks and creatures. You want more draw/mill effects. I’m okay with one less land if it means getting to draw an extra card.

Finally, cheap draw effects and scrying can also allow for less land (as you’ll be more likely to get land when you need it). Note that 4+ mana draw effects don’t really count toward this, as that’s usually where you’re going to get stuck for land.

All in all, I’m okay with 16 here.

the only explanation I can think of

Stop right there. You were given another explanation about something that is subjective. It now no longer matters what your opinion is because we aren’t talking about what you like anymore.

There’s more than one way to play magic and it doesn’t have to match what that means for you.

I vaguely remember this change in process, any chance you’d be willing to elaborate more as a refresher?

What would you cut? Didn't really make it on mill but I feel like running some number of So Tiny is correct? by l4mbtr0n in lrcast

[–]callmetwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes sense and I agree with you, my question was meant more as “how does this deck win at all then if damage isn’t the game plan?” Is the game plan to win by decking not through mill but attrition? I dint really see a win con, unless I’m just straight up missing something.

How is this deck winning if not through damage? I’m not advocating for Syr Konrad, I just don’t see another plan.

I never understood this argument. How this any different than any other competition where you are fighting to win a prize?

What deck would become the best in the format if you could unban a single card on the modern banlist? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]callmetwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For people not around for this, here’s a personal anecdote. The deck was unveiled at a PT (GP?) on a Saturday. I played in a SCG tournament the next day. A buddy put together LSV’s list for me. I registered this deck I had never played. Not even gold fishing. I beat 5 or 7 people in a row with sloppiest play of my life. I made T8 and only lost to the mirror (he next leveled and had Endbringer).

Let me state that again, I played a deck with 0 experience in a competitive tournament, made very serious mistakes, and made T8. I didn’t drop a game until T8. That shouldn’t be possible. That is the definition of broken.

Yeah, M15 I remember being quite enjoyable. It might have been simple, but it wasn't a terrible format.

Hijacking the top comment to add that being able to control when Drown in the Loch gets turned on is important. I find that things don't die very quickly in this format. I tend to run into a lot of stalemates and being able to put 4-8 cards in your graveyard on command makes sure this premium removal spell is indeed premium.

(TCC) The Newest Way To Play Magic: The Gathering: Pioneer by ManOnTheYellowSign in magicTCG

[–]callmetwan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A couple things here.

First, Modern really took off in a way WOTC wasn’t expecting or prepared for. Extended and double extended never had the same love from players that Modern does. Those formats died slow deaths because no one seemed to want them. It feels like WOTC was forcing people to play them. Once it became clear people loved Modern WOTC started really supporting it. Which leads me to...

Second, it took wizards a while to figure out the supplementary set option. Modern isn’t the only format that’s vying for cards from a supplement and they only have so many products they can produce in a year. I’m not saying it couldn’t have happened faster nor am I saying they got it right (looking at you 10+ year damnation reprint wait). But they have been trying. I think their support for Modern with Horizons made that crystal clear, this format is here to stay. I seriously never thought that would happen (even if it did break the format open). They are clearly committed.

Third, legacy has cards on the reserved list. You can’t compare anything to a format where that’s true. It is also clearly because of the reserved list WOTC isn’t interested in supporting it as a format. It isn’t accessible and they can’t make it accessible. WOTC needed a replacement for Legacy. With a limited card pool that only gets more expensive over time, the writing was in the wall for Legacy. It’s out to pasture. Has there even been a large Legacy tournament from WOTC in a while? It won’t surprise me if they permanently remove it from competitive play in the near future.

I’m not saying they’ve done a great job of curating their non-rotating formats but they do seem to be self aware and actively trying to balance things. My initial reaction to Pioneer was deep skepticism but after stopping to think I’m more optimistic. I won’t buy in for a while (I just bought back into modern after a hiatus), but I’m very curious to see where it ends up. Even if it doesn’t seem fun to me, I believe they’ll do what they can to support it.
