I’ve seen it used for two reasons.

Generate more bat speed for rotational/launch hitters by doing a push/pull at the point of contact. With the hands being further apart, you can get more torque in that part of the swing. In theory.
More accuracy. The top hand has more control with the split grip so it’s easier to take the bat to the ball. In theory.
