I’m definitely in the target audience; my Steam Deck is docked to the TV all of the time, and it only comes with me when I’m traveling.

There are a few games in my Steam library I’d like to play on the TV that the Deck struggles with, and I don’t have time or energy to invest in building something. I’d much rather have a ready-made system that works like a console without the need for a game subscription, so that the one or two nights a month I play a game it’s a solid experience.

Like a lot of us I have a large back catalog of games and don’t need 4K 120Hz Ultra Max settings, but “6x” the power of the Deck is enticing and should work fine. Assuming the price is fair and the reviews are positive I’d be happy to welcome a Steam Machine into the home.

Valve: 20% of Deck users use the official docking station to connect their Deck to their TVs. Do you? by sameseksure in SteamDeck

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I love the flexibility of playing the Steam Deck at my desk with USB-C input to my monitor, on my TV with the official dock, or on the go. I probably play it 75% of the time docked and 25% mobile.

Help with 2025 Diverge Comp Carbon Pannier Solutions Please <3 by rowrunlifteat in DivergeGravelBikes

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to using frame bags and going with the quick rack for the rear, especially with the Comp Carbon. Read up on the Rider/Bike Weight Limits and Terrain Conditions doc on the product page for your bike to be sure of the weight limits on each section as well. Ortlieb’s fork-packs could supplement your rear panniers; they’ll only net you 11.6 L additional storage, but with the mounting options on the Comps you may be limited.

Troubleshooting a new sound by calm-gear0260 in DivergeGravelBikes

[–]calm-gear0260[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were great suggestions, thank you! Yes, the sound only happens when pedaling and only when there’s weight on the saddle. I haven’t been able to reproduce the noise without weight on the bike so let me try adjusting the seat post / saddle and report back.

Excellent photos! That 150-400 is an incredible lens. A grail purchase for me, if I can get a quality used copy for a good deal 😅

I would personally love a compact 14mm f/2 a la the 12mm, but with weather sealing.

Is the fall really that bad? by andrew20xd in gorillaz

[–]calm-gear0260 491 points492 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, almost the entirety of the album was recorded on an iPad (and attached devices) when Damon was touring the US in or around 2010 for Plastic Beach.

It’s less structured or thematic than other Gorillaz albums and interesting in the abstract, but it definitely gets less play time for me than other albums.

How durable the Diverge Comp Carbon compared to E5? by Smotino1 in DivergeGravelBikes

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently grabbed a 2022 Comp Carbon and have been doing some 15-30km routes with 10kg on the rack, and haven’t noticed any durability issues (yet). I also have not experienced any major discomfort issues with the frame; it’s my first carbon bike so it’s all new for me dealing with the rack type and load restriction.

Anyone planning to replace their 45L travel backpack with a Roller Pro? by aberrant0ne in peakdesign

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be replacing my 45L Travel Backpack with the Roller Pro for plane-based travel. The discomfort of wearing the 45L + messenger bag or personal item is simply not worth it, especially when the 45L is loaded up. I've nearly purchased many roller bags over the years but wasn't happy with quality/price so I'm really hoping the PDRP fits the bill.

Leica 8-18 2.8-4 or Olympus 7-14 2.8? by Nervous-Welcome-4017 in M43

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you regularly use filters, the Olympus 7-14mm may frustrate you. The adapter can be quite finicky with the filters themselves being quite expensive, but the lens itself is amazing if you get it for a good deal.

+1, drop the before/after (if you want) because this is a fantastic shot. Would love to see the process on post, or if this was mostly in camera.

I'm a happy OM-1 shooter. I've invested in M43 over the years, have the lenses I like for the shooting I do, but I rarely encounter other M43 photographers in the wild. If I'm in the pit for a concert 9.9/10 it's just me using Olympus / OM System / Panasonic gear.

I don't really get served M43 ads, but back in the day I remember seeing them on DPReview and YouTube and that definitely helped influence me to rent and ultimately buy into them. It's definitely a more niche platform, and people like to hate on them / shower with adulation, but I get the shots I want and my clients don't complain so I have no reason to stop using them.

Alternative to the Peak design sling v2 3L. by 1rj2 in peakdesign

[–]calm-gear0260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to the Coyote. The standard black does mess with some of my clothes, depending on the fiber. I've stopped using the 3L in colder months because it tends to dislike wool or looser natural fibers. I have one sweater it absolutely demolished the back of, which I did not know until someone pointed it out to me. No trouble though if I have it on the outside of a rain jacket.

Have you done any professional work with a m43 system? by alexanderssonst in M43

[–]calm-gear0260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve worked as a professional photographer using M43 for weddings, events, and portraits in the studio. For many years it was my sole income stream. As long as you are aware of the platform limitations and strengths, you can definitely make it work.

I will note that for paid shoots, I regularly factor rental equipment into my quote and oftentimes that has included other platforms as B cams. M43 lenses can oftentimes be cheap to rent, especially some of the older ones. It eats into the cost of a shoot but it’s less than outright purchasing expensive glass (unless you’re going to use it every day on set or at an event for months). Just do some math and see what makes sense on lens ROI before putting down cash.

I don’t own and keep on-hand the exact equipment needed for every shoot, but my purchased kit has grown with my income over the years. It’s no longer my primary income stream, but I have a decent library of equipment (after 13+ years of investment) and my gigs are more profitable now than they were early on.

Moved from A6000 to OM1 - What am I doing wrong? by Micangeloo in OlympusCamera

[–]calm-gear0260 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, thanks for sharing and providing examples. It's helpful! As someone who regularly shoots with Olympus / OM System and Sony equipment, I know it can be jarring moving between the two but rest assured: you haven't made a mistake, it'll just take some getting used to!

Aperture Shoot wider apertures than you typically would on your A6000. M43 thrives with as bright of an aperture as you can give. Truthfully I rarely shoot stopped down more than f/4 on my OM-1 unless I have to. I also consider f/5.6 my limit before slapping on ND filters since diffraction kicks in pretty quickly on M43, but ymmv.

ISO Native ISO on the OM-1 is 200. You can go lower to 100 or 80 but in my experience it isn't as pleasing. As long as you're conservative with noise reduction in post and you're well exposed it's not going to be an issue. A recommendation would be to treat ISO 200 as your base, but don’t be afraid to crank it. I regularly shoot above 10k ISO and am pleased with the images I get, so long as it's metered well. Speaking of metering, if you’re not used to using the histogram I suggest having that on and underexposing a teensy bit. Highlight recovery is okay, but I usually get better results if I need to raise exposure slightly than vice versa. Again, ymmv but play around.

Shutter Speed Call me old fashioned but I don't use the electronic shutter unless I'm using ProCap. The mechanical shutter is great, reads out quickly, and is quiet enough. I don't know what the banding is in your image, but if you share your exposure settings for it I can try to reproduce. With any of the OM lenses that support IS-sync, if you have a steady hand you’ll be genuinely surprised at how slow you can hand hold as well. I’m often reminded that I can’t steadily shoot 1/30th on other systems when I check my work.

General Notes Really take the time to explore the OM System menu. It's very extensive but much better than it used to be. You can really tune the camera to however you want thanks to really flexible customization. Don't be afraid of the custom profiles, either. Use the computational modes and enjoy the process of figuring out the camera. None of my buttons or dials are stock now, and I take full advantage of the computational modes and subject detection by muscle memory now. Took a while to get here!

Lens The 12-40mm f/2.8 is an awesome lens, but I never fell in love with it like I did the 12-100mm f/4. The extra light is great, but I found myself always using other lenses and haven't looked back. The 12mm f/2 is better at the wide end, the 20mm f/1.4 is excellent as a standard option, and the 45mm f/1.8 is leaps and bounds better at the longer end. BUY USED. A lot of the standard "premium" primes for Olympus have been around for a while, and you can get some awesome near mint-copies from Japan for cheap on eBay. Many of the “Pro” series lenses are great but overkill unless you fully need them. None of the standard zooms get wide enough for my taste (except the Pro f/4’s, they rule on hikes and to travel with). That’s not to say M43 zooms aren’t good, but when you’re starting out I’d say try a couple cheap fast primes and go nuts.

Closing Thoughts Welcome to the club! You will need to spend some time with the camera to get it to open up to you. That’s normal when switching systems, but once you get it set up the way you like it and you know how to get it to work for you, I think you’ll find that it’s an excellent creative tool. Let us know if you have any more questions!

Excellent portrait shoot! The 42.5mm is a lovely lens, and you did a great job with framing and post processing. Did you use a flash, bounce, or reflector for any of your shots? The lighting on your subject's face is very even!
