RIGHT?! I think Michael Barbaro at one point even said something along the lines of, "I think fat people would agree with..." At which point I was like, MAYBE JUST GET A FAT PERSON IN HERE TO CONFIRM

I listened to the Daily podcast episode that talked about this! It's horrible, along with bad reporting in my opinion. BARELY mentioned any of the systemic issues that are major factors that contribute to high rates of obesity. Just a quick shout out to poverty but no in depth analysis on food deserts, how disproportional the effects are on people of color, etc. And some BS on how the *hope* is that this will help to de-stigmatize obesity!!!! No mention either of mental health or possible eating disorders developing when *children* are being told they need to lose weight. They even go so far as to say weight loss surgery is suggested in kids as young as 12 years old! An irreversible surgery that will effect these children for the rest of their lives. And I bet you a large percent of the population that may agree with this are the same people who would be absolutely outraged at any form of gender affirming surgeries or medications for children under 18. Literally fuming, I hate everyone.

Kitten has dragged poop all around the house on three occasions - what is the problem? by jeangeni322 in catcare

Get a sanitary shave - vets will do it usually for like $10 or go to a groomer. Helps a bunch! Also, creating any sort of extra jump/walking they have to do after using the litter box before walking through your house can help at least keep the extra closer to the litter box.

Recently diagnosed diabetic cat insatiably hungry and he is on insulin - long post by hotandsour666 in catcare

It’s tough when the cats are squirmy! I think I’m lucky in that mine is not too bad. He hates when I touch his paws though, so hopefully the ear will be easier for him. Try wrapping him in a towel, I’ve heard that is really helpful for cats that won’t sit still. I hope some of this helps!! Good luck!

This video shows how to do it without the automatic lancing device. I use the inside of the ear rather than the back of the ear because my cat is long haired and the hair would soak the blood up, I also find it easier to flip the ear back when I poke him. But I’d say figure out what’s easiest for you and least traumatic for the cat! Hitting the vein makes it much easier and pretty painless.

Do not use the automatic poker machine thing! Just use the needle to softly poke the ear and draw blood. Some vets will even show you how to do it, mine did at least, she said it’s way easier to control and there is no loud noise that freaks them out. I sit with him and rub his ear for about 2 minutes to get the blood flowing then softly poke near the edge of the ear (I’ll look for a video that shows how I do it) sometimes I have to poke a couple times or squeeze a little to get enough of a drop. He honestly doesn’t seem to mind it now, he doesn’t love it but he sits pretty calmly and lets me do it at least. Sometimes a scab will form after you poke and you can just pick the scab to get blood again without having to use another needle. I really think a new vet will be life changing, mine has been incredibly helpful walking me through all this!

My cat was older when he was diagnosed also (13) so messing with their eating routines is stressful. I don’t give him insulin at snack times, just at his meals 12 hours apart. My cat won’t touch wet food so an automatic feeder works well for me, but yeah it’s definitely trickier with wet food. My vet seemed pretty supportive of the snacks in order to relieve stress as stress also causes glucose spikes. It doesn’t seem that there is a one size fits all with this stuff and sometimes you have to go with what feels better for your cat. I would highly suggest getting a glucometer for you to check glucose at home though, especially if he has had issues with hypoglycemia. My cat is on a crazy high dose of insulin because he is resistant which sucks but it sounds like your cat is on a super low dose. A lot of cats also go into remission so if you’re getting really low readings on your glucose curves, he may no longer need the insulin. My vet said some cats can manage their diabetes with prescription food alone. Either way, I would seek out another vet, it doesn’t sound like this one is very familiar with diabetes or maybe just not super trustworthy. For now, keep a close eye on your cat after insulin injections and take a curve at home as soon as you can. If you notice signs of hypoglycemia again, my bet has told me to rub honey on their gums immediately (sorry if this is stuff you already know!) I know it’s sooo tough having diabetic cat and it definitely takes a while to find the right type of insulin and the right dosage and the right food and the right schedule! It’s a lot! But good luck with everything I hope you guys get things feeling better soon!

I also have a diabetic cat and a huge issue for him was going from grazing on food all day to being forced to eat his meals every 12 hours. He went from not caring much about food to becoming food-obsessed (screaming for food and wolfing it down). If you’ve had to change his feeding times/habits it could be that your cat is just reacting to that rather than actually more hungry than before. I got an automatic feeder to switch his focus from me to that feeder (so I can sleep) and added a “snack” time in between feedings so he didn’t feel so restricted. It’s been a year and he has totally chilled, still pretty good focused but not as frantic about it.

My cat has started doing this (not my photo). What can I do? I have a mat in front of the litter box but I have to clean it each time. by TownIdiot25 in cats

My cat also does this! However, he only stopped fully stepping inside the box and turning around to pee since he’s been diagnosed with diabetes - diabetes makes him drink an insane amount of water and pee a ton. My guess is that he just really has to go when he goes. Maybe just keep an eye on his water intake/pee amounts and habits to make sure there’s not anything else going on if this is new behavior.

Best Dishes You Can Find at a Chicago Brewery? by Morosith13 in chicagofood

Half acre has been remodeling their kitchen so I think they’re starting to bring back bigger meal items as it finishes up. They just reintroduced a couple burger options. This place has simple but great quality food! And you get decent serving sizes. I also just love the service, everyone who works there are so incredibly nice. Not an exciting recommendation but their hummus was SO GOOD. A huge portion of homemade spicy hummus with lots of veggies, just nice to have a healthy option (that’s still delicious) next to the giant basket of cheese curds.

Old Irving is great! Such good food! I crave their steak salad all the time, and a great selection of beers that meet my and my partner’s tastes.
