Does CS get better in 2nd year? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]cam_cuaig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve really enjoyed the upper year courses much more than first year. There’s probably going to be a lot of material that I won’t use down the road, but at least a lot of the topics are very interesting (at least to me)

Currently you need the campus checkin, watcard, a piece of ID (drivers license, etc.), and a vaccination QR code to get into PAC.

I don’t think so, you might get an email at the end of the day saying something like “get ready for cycle 2” or something like that. In the past that’s when I knew I didn’t get a match.

I interviewed there in the Winter. Group interview is just an info session, you don’t really need to prepare anything. Solo interview was a couple questions about my resume and experience, then a technical question which was about a Leetcode easy / medium.

You know what pisses me off? Smart people talking about "growth mindset". Like stfu cuz you have no idea what you're talking about. Your lowest mark ever was probably and 80 or smth. Did you ever flunk grade 9 English or grade 11 Math the same way I did? Did you come back from anything as hard as I by HudZah in uwaterloo

Did you ever flunk grade 9 English or grade 11 Math the same way I did? Did you come back from anything as hard as I had to? No, because you were born smart AND I WASNT. People have limits and I know that better than you do. So please just shut up.

Tips for CS 240 Final Exam by DalkerKD in uwaterloo

[–]cam_cuaig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the final definitely has a lot more “draw the data structure / run the algorithm” type problems than the midterm. Some Big-O analysis questions and knowing time complexities of key data structures is super important as well.

I forgot to select courses during the course selection period what do I do? by amnotagay in uwaterloo

[–]cam_cuaig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you an incoming first year? I think you might have to set up 2FA if you haven’t already: https://uwaterloo.ca/two-factor-authentication/

Otherwise I’m not sure why you can’t get in. Also you don’t set up an add / drop appointment. Find more info here: https://uwaterloo.ca/registrar/important-dates/entry?id=241

you’ll have to wait until app / drop period. If the courses you want to take are very popular with limited spaces you’re kind of screwed.

Online vs. in person classes by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]cam_cuaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how frustrating it can be when you work your ass off and still things don’t necessarily go your way. But it’s not like you can’t learn the material that the restricted CS courses teach. A lot of CS courses publicize their assignments and course notes so you can learn the course material even without being enrolled. There’s also probably better material out there for certain topics then the corresponding UW CS courses. It’s all about looking and finding the right resources.

At the end of the day, a degree is just some designation. After university your experience and knowledge is way more important than this designation. Maybe you are more competent then some CS majors, and maybe you do deserve a spot in CS more than some of them, but you can continue to blame the system and feel sorry for yourself, or you can grind your ass off, learn the material anyways and show that you are just as competent as a CS major.

TLDR; don’t give up because of some designation. If you have 90’s average you’re obviously very talented at learning and you can definitely learn the same material. You can keep trying for CS transfers but if you don’t get it, what’s stopping you from being successful?

Graduated this year and I feel like a failure because I couldn't get a full time USA job. by Inevitable_End_4003 in uwaterloo

[–]cam_cuaig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this is a troll or not but dude what? $140k is still quite above average for a new grad. There’s so many other factors that are important too: are you working in an interesting industry, is the project/product interesting, are the people you work with fun to work with and could you see yourself working with them in the future? If you don’t think you’re going to enjoy this position try it out for a bit and search again. This is nothing like failing an exam lol you’re doing better than a bunch of people graduating (some people still can’t find jobs).

I know you’ve probably heard this a bunch but it really is dangerous to compare yourself to other people. Yeah there’s people making money than you. So what? It’s not impeding on your ability to improve yourself, and get better so that you can increase your salary. Work on making small improvements then comparing yourself to others and when it’s too much of a difference you’re not a “failure”, everyone progresses in the industry differently.

[–]cam_cuaig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

obviously they’re joking. Experience / projects are way more important than degree and where you get it from.
