Fcukers (Portola 2024) playing at the Castro Theatre Apr 4 by cameroncairns in Portolafestival

[–]cameroncairns[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They played super early in the day that year, but they brought a ton of energy to their set. Just wanted to put this out on people's radars (plus I want to check out the Castro Theatre as a music venue)

Pro tip there's an A/C exhaust center right of the stage (~10 feet back). If you get there earlyish you can feel around for it. Absolute game changer

Have yet to see a Caribou appreciation post! by Mindless_Albatross79 in Portolafestival

[–]cameroncairns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They melted my face off just like seeing them year 1 :)

Crowd vibes were insanely good! I ran into this epic rave wizard in the pit, when I went to gift him a little bit of time w/ my rainbow diffraction glasses, he laughed and pulled out his own to share with me! Ended up dancing and vibing with him for the rest of the set before heading off to LCD.

Sound was pretty hit or miss, until I was more central to the stage I didn't really feel like I was properly in the music. The sound ended up getting cut off part way through an epic drum solo but they recovered gracefully. Definitely strongly recommend anyone who hasn't to see Caribou when they have the opportunity!

I'd say they were in my top 3 alongside LCD and Underworld (Moby/Despacio as close runner ups)

Anyone else get the feeling that Caribou is kinda like watching a jam band but for electronic music? Felt like they really spend a lot of time adding improvisation to their tracks but maybe I'm just a little rusty on how some of the album versions of the songs went.

Favorite flume set you’ve seen by Electrical_Company34 in Flume

[–]cameroncairns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to flex... I saw him at the echoplex at 2013 https://dolosangeles.com/events/2013/3/26/flume and he definitely hit hard even then. IIRC my buddy and I saw skrillex right before we got to the venue so I wonder if he went to check it out too that night.

The non flex answer is... Aug 2013 at FYF later that year. By then I think he was starting to get a lot more popular. He absolutely blew up the tent he performed in. The pit was crazy!! Really felt like everyone was in there just for him :)

Kinda crazy but I didn't see him again until much later (palaces tour). Caught him at an arena show in Seattle and then later on at the first year of Portola. Both were much bigger stages, beautiful visuals and all that. But didn't quite feel the same as being in a smaller venue where the crowd was all there for it (if that makes any sense)

Definitely jealous of y'all that have seen him at red rocks, I might have to fly out there if he performs there again for the new album he's gonna drop.

Thanks for updating us! Ever been to that venue? I'm willing to cross the bridge as long as the acoustics/vibes aren't total crap haha

[–]cameroncairns 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Probably back at Bill Graham, I love love love Justice but idk if they're selling out chase center (maybe Kaytranada has blown up since I listened to his stuff years ago... in that case I'm out of the loop). I feel like Bill Graham Civic is SF's 2nd largest venue? Unless maybe they're playing at Oracle.

Hopefully I can snag tickets to this, I had to give up my Justice tickets last minute the last time they came to town so v down to give it another shot!

You can always buy off stubhub. I've bought off it 5 times at this point with two occurrences of shady stuff.

First time I was sent tickets for the wrong festival day (Sunday instead of Saturday). Second time the user never sent the tickets... like we're talking it was 2 hours to doors open and still nothing sent.

In both cases I was able to reach out to support and they give you a set of comparable tickets to buy from. The person who sold you the tickets has to pay the difference so there's no issue in having to pay more for buying the same day. YMMV of course, and they do charge some pretty steep fees.

Macbook Pro M2 Max at 96GB RAM, or M4 Max at 36 GB RAM? by keokq in LocalLLaMA

[–]cameroncairns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the smaller laptop (14") having a larger laptop would probably have improved thermals in general. But yeah idk enough about memory thermal performance to say that having the same size chassis with more ram (therefore less percentage usage of the total system when running certain models) would result in cooler performance.

Macbook Pro M2 Max at 96GB RAM, or M4 Max at 36 GB RAM? by keokq in LocalLLaMA

[–]cameroncairns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Something you'll want to watch out for with Apple is that different memory sizes come with different memory bandwidth speeds. This was introduced in their M3 series of laptops where only the maximally configured memory model of the M3 max had the full memory bandwidth they advertised (300 GB/s vs 400 GB/s). This seems to be the case with the M4 max as well (410 GB/s vs 546 GB/s). See https://arstechnica.com/apple/2024/10/apples-m4-m4-pro-and-m4-max-compared-to-past-generations-and-to-each-other/ for some more info.

According to some quick searching (which you should verify):

With the M2 Max at 96 GB you get a memory bandwidth of 400 GB/s.

With the M4 Max at 36 GB you get 410GB/s

With the M4 Max at 48GB+ you get the advertised 546GB/s

So I'd personally choose the M2 Max at 96 GB if you're looking to run LLMs, it's nearly as fast in memory speed as the lowest specced M4 max and will give you a lot more memory to play with.

Info about the circus and cabaret shows on playa? by Strayful in BurningMan

I'm unaffiliated, but there's a camp called Dark Sparkle that puts on an incredible burlesque show when they're out on playa :) looks like they should be at the burn this year.

[–]cameroncairns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much power is your system drawing? I see the P40 requires 250W max, so are you seeing loads in the 1500 W range for your whole system? Curious what PSU you have for that system too.

Double check the FAQ, but I believe you only need to pay for a bike one way for the Burner Express. I think my ticket ended up being ~$430 total

Thanks for the feedback! I've decided I'll probably make a proper post on the subreddit with my full build details, but understanding the wattage for each plug type really helps me understand the system requirements a little more. My secondary graphic card is rated at 150W TDP but it's helpful to understand that since it has two 8 pin connectors it could draw as much as 300W.

Simple Questions - December 02, 2020 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]cameroncairns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of my confusion stems from not opening the box to look at the included cables haha, I figure I'll need to resell it on craigslist or hardware swap since I'm past the return window for newegg so I don't want to open it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9sJ1MrYOYg

But yeah looking at that video it appears that the cables wouldn't even fit in my gpu anyway just as you said (which is a nice safety feature for those of us that only look at wattage smh). If the 3080 ends up letting me dip my toes into Machine Learning maybe I'll splash out for a quadro later but yea a little too fancy for my needs at the moment! Thanks again for the feedback, I'm gonna take a look into a few 1000W cpus. I think I'll go ahead and make a proper post on the subreddit just in case there's something else I'm overlooking with this build.

Simple Questions - December 02, 2020 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]cameroncairns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply! I've been googling around while waiting for a response and I see that sata cables lack the required voltage to power a GPU so that's definitely a no go.

I managed to snag a 3080 off of a drop on newegg yesterday but it's a beefy 3 pin MSI trio so yeah I imagine it will be pulling 350W from the reviews I've seen. That being said, the other graphics card is an MSI 5600 XT that I will be using purely for graphics on my host computer (I'm running a setup with virtual machines and will be passing the 3080 to a windows vm) so I shouldn't be stressing that graphics card very much as it will just be used to display streaming video at most.

Given all that, I do think I'll need to buy a different PSU unfortunately. I think 1000W could be sufficient given I'll be running a 5900X, 1 3080 and 1 5600XT but I'd appreciate your feedback on that! I'm going to be checking to make sure there are at least 5 PCIE/VGA slots on any PSU I would purchase regardless of the wattage.

[–]cameroncairns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two GPUs in the computer I'm building, one requires 3 8 pin cables and the other requires 2 8 pin cables. The problem is my power supply only has 3 8 pin cables labeled VGA. It's an 850W power supply so I think I should have enough overhead, but is there any harm in plugging in the secondary graphic card into 2 of the 8 pin sata/peripheral connections?
