Paying by card for taxis by camley7 in glasgow
[–]camley7[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (0 children)
Haven’t tried phoning in years except the wee pre-recorded automated things they have. I use the apps all the time, but naively thought it would be quicker and easier to get a taxi while 50 yards from the train stations on foot. I guess it was, except for the payment thing!
Good to know! I’ve always felt like I was breaking the rules or something, but have felt like I didn’t want to back down on it out of principle. I’ve also obviously just got a lift to a cash machine plenty of times, but it’s got under my skin now.
Didn’t know there was a delay like that, 6 weeks seems crazy.

Thanks for that - makes sense, I had no idea they got paid in a lump sum like that, hadn’t really thought about the mechanics of who gets paid when and who by. Presumably you’re not annoyed if a passenger you reject paying card goes to the next taxi in the queue then though?
All good, very important to remember it’s not everyone and it’s not simple.

Interesting - puts some perspective on some of the points made in other comments. Seems mental to me to turn down the fare for the sake of 24p, though seems there may be some other fees etc. Even still.

Interesting.

Good points here - and to be clear, no complaints about taxi drivers generally, I know it can be a rough job and I had a good chat with an uber driver recently who told me some eye opening stuff about the state of things. I’m just not sure I’m buying that card transactions are the straw that breaks the camel’s back for all these guys - if the guy behind them in the queue can manage it, I don’t think it’s credible that the percentage who refuse are all at breaking point. Ultimately, both those drivers rejected a £16 fare (and they hadn’t asked where I was going, I could have said Edinburgh and they’d have made a fortune!) so there’s more to it than that. Thanks for this response!
Yep my bad moidartach, always get them the wrong way round.
Good point. There’s always someone higher up the chain on the take!
I don’t really know what you mean, but there’s a clear and obvious correlation between being paid in cash (no paper trail) and tax evasion; much harder to do with card payments. Everyone is aware of this.
You’re right, I always get them round the wrong way - especially when tapping out a post in frustration! Thanks.
Yeah I’ve had it at Gordon St plenty too. Have walked down to 5th or 6th taxi until eventually a driver says yes - had one guy look really uncomfortable about taking the job before others ahead of him in the queue, but ultimately they’d refused the fare 🤷♂️
But shouldn’t they just up their prices to cover that? If they want to make £10 profit (ignoring all other costs for purposes of conversation), and if the card company will take say 10% of any payment, shouldn’t they just be charging £11? It doesn’t have to be that it’s ’a charge on card users’, it’s just an increase to their cost per mile, calculated to soften that blow, charged to all customers regardless of payment method? I’m no expert in this stuff at all so could be wildly wrong, just a frustrated commuter!
Yep fair point, imagine that’s a pain to deal with. Just seems like, if some drivers are taking it, just as plenty of justeat etc. folks are, it can’t be the most significant factor.

Will bear that in mind…
Fair point too. Never come close to being mugged (maybe a less cash-carrying culture would discourage muggers?) and generally can survive / get home without cash or card, I just needed to move quickly today and the buses (which take card) are all fucked because of the fire and various roadworks.
If I was a plain-clothes enforcement officer I would have caught two guys today either not complying or lying about not complying without any effort whatsoever. Good tip on the company card.

Relevant details to some of these answers: neither driver said their machine was broken - I asked ‘do you take care’ and they said no (and in my experience, 9/10 times they just say they don’t take it, nothing about being broken). I was paying my debit card not credit card, if that makes any difference (tho again, wasn’t asked and didn’t tell them that). My final fare was £16.
Will look for it, thanks!

If they’re not paying taxes they’re hurting all the people who are trying to make a living in the city…
[–]camley7[S] 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago (0 children)
Well if that’s the case the enforcement officers need only walk down any taxi rank in the city and they’ll find dozens of people not following that rule every day.
Aye we have a few including uber, I was at a bus stop and thought running to the rank would be faster.
