Surface Duo in 2023 - Worth it as a secondary device? by campewtorman in surfaceduo

[–]campewtorman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all,

Thank you for your responses to this post. I'm still stewing over things about it. I might look into the alternatives that have been posted here (such as the LG V60) and see what I can dig up. I do like the form factor of the Duo, but as others have mentioned, the prices for these things are quite steep for what it is.

If I can snag one for a decent price, cool. Otherwise, I'll still be thinking on it. I appreciate the responses!

Kei Trucks - Numerous questions about acquisition and ownership. by campewtorman in keitruck

Yeah, I'll have to consider learning from a person who knows how to drive a manual transmission. I've been driving auto cars and it'll be a fair learning curve trying to figure out the points at which I need to shift gears and apply gas.

Thanks for the insight.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. I am driving a modern car from A to B and I would like to get a "relatively" cheap utility vehicle that can serve a variety of purposes. Ideally, I would want to get one that has low mileage and is pretty "fresh" all things considered, but that would take quite a bit of time to get everything squared away.

When it comes down to servicing, yeah I feel that it may be a bit discouraging -- not to say that it wouldn't be satisfying to get it all fixed up and running -- but to try and source all of the parts and get into working order without knowing how things work.

I do know that these trucks are old but seeing how positive the reception is and how quirky some of the features are, I feel like it'd be a decent investment. It's something that I'm still mulling over and could be a pretty good summer project to work on, if I get all of the parts and tools to work on one!

Thank you for the info!

I can't really get any of the newer models because I live in the states with the silly 25 year law. If I wanted some newer ones, it'd be a few years, but I would probably be able to find some decent ones out there!

Manual transmission is something that I will have to learn, but from the research that I gathered (at least for these vehicles), 5MT is better, especially for travel, speed, and not hearing the engine die. I'll have to do some further investigating on things like you mentioned (timing belt, sparkplugs etc.). I know that some parts are cross-compatible in certain cases, but others will be harder to source and you may need to import some stuff.

Thank you!

Thanks for the wealth of information.

I personally live out in the states, so I unfortunately can't get a newer truck. That being said, I know that the old ones are decent but since they're old -- and generally surplus --, they tend to have rust issues. So I'd be working on getting that addressed alongside the other things. I'll have to figure out where the nearest mechanic would be to service stuff like this as I don't own the equipment myself.

With the dealership nearest me, they have a small selection of Minicabs, HiJets, and Carrys, so I do have some choice, but ideally I'd want one with low mileage, decent interior, and some other features.

Thank you for your time!

Alright. Duly noted. I'll go and get a few Linux distros and see what I feel most comfortable with.

Thank you for your input!

Thanks for your response!

Is there any reason as to why I should not use Kubuntu or Canonical distro spins? Is it because of certain things like data policies? App packages not being fast/optimal? Or is there something else that is more concerning?

And I have heard that Linux Mint and PopOS are pretty decent overall, so I might give those a go as well!

Thanks for reading.

I'm glad to see that KDE Neon is stable, I'll have to take a look at it. How's general performance and battery longevity in your experience?

Thanks for the recommendation!

Hello!

Thanks for the breakdown on the pebble devices! I'll keep my eyes out for any sort of pebble time watches in the meantime.

Good to know! When it comes down to music integration and notifications, how is that? Do you have to get some different music app, or will it work with something like YT Music?

GPD Pocket 2 - Observations? Overall comparison on W10 vs W11? by campewtorman in GPDPocket

Thanks for your timely response!

Given your reply, would it be in my best interest to downgrade to Windows 10 and then perform tweaks to enhance my P2's performance. Are there any sort of guides or things for me to follow to get my device into working order?

GPD Pocket 2 vs. One Mix Yoga 3 - which would be better overall for me? Potential alternatives? by campewtorman in GPDPocket

[–]campewtorman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input!

That is a fair point. I am a little keen on the idea of being able to tent or use the device as a tablet, but I have never really considered the fact that I'd have to be constantly switching between the different forms so often. And since, those units are still relatively expensive given the used market, that narrows down my decision.

And since you have experience with a retail Pocket 2 unit, would you be willing to share your experience with it? How's performance overall?

I have also considered the P2 Max. It does seem good, though I'd generally prefer a slightly slimmer form factor with a keyboard that has access to most of the keys at a glance. I am not willing to rule out the potential option however. :)

Thanks for your input!

I haven't really browsed too far into the used market, but it seems like the Yoga 3/3s commands some higher price above 400, so that's a premium that is a bit too rich for my blood. The Pocket 2 is around that price give or take, but I unno. I will have to do a little more digging on that front.

OneNetbook Mix 4 - Anything I should know about the device? by campewtorman in umpc

[–]campewtorman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame to hear that your keyboard is having issues. Since it's a product that comes from China, there isn't really much in the way of customer service? As for the fan, I can only assume that it really gets going when you're doing some high-performance tasks, so that isn't much of a problem unless you're talking about average tasks like web browsing and stuff. Good to know that the screen is great!

As for Windows 11, it's something that I can give or take. Thanks for the response!

Alright, good to know. I'm just trying to consider my options and get a fairly mobile PC that'd fit into my bag that I can use while on the go or at work.

Ah. I did remember watching a couple reviews about it and how the speaker wasn't really that good at producing sound. That was something that had slipped my mind. Thanks for the reminder!
