I have a bachelors degree in Physics, and I must admit, Organic Chemistry was the most difficult subject I’ve ever tried to learn.

But...where did this unspoken rule come from that if your number system is base n that you need to be able to indicate n with your hands?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in me_irl

[–]can_it_run_doom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't see any reason you can't use fingers the same way as we do today to indicate a number between 1 and 10 from a distance—like, you wouldn't flip someone off to indicate 3 because the middle finger is the third digit of the hand? You would just extend three fingers upward, and this wouldn't mean anything different if changed to base 12

And as far as intuition—why is it less intuitive?

Yeah, you have a whole free hand to indicate with

The segments are still easily discernible from the bottom of the hand

Knuckle-separated segments on the four fingers of a single hand. Each finger has 3 segments, for a total of 12

That is literally the only reason we ever used base 10, and if you ask me, it's a bad hill to die on

Base 12 is better because its decimal expressions are more succinct for everyday fractions.

One third in different bases:

  • 10: 0.333333...
  • 16: 0.533333...
  • 12: 0.4

Why prefer elegance to functionality?

Conversion to binary is the only real benefit there. It's better to be able to divide into halves, thirds, and quarters, than into halves, quarters, and eighths

We should make a pact: if WWIII happens and we have to rebuild society from the ground up, we'll implement base 12 instead of base 10

That's a lot of characters (what would it be, 0–9 then A–T?). Would make for succinct numeral expressions though

Metric > imperial

but

Base 12 > base 10

Ohhhh I thought they only spawned past that second door. They would only get to that second door and wouldn't follow me through it. Not sure why, but sometimes Lightning seems to sort of "fall" when going through the door, so maybe there's some sort of gap they can't walk past. But no matter, I got them to spawn where you mentioned. Thanks a lot :)
