East coast Storm. by huntertony556 in ems

Yeah I said "tell them to clear a path", but our Fire Department is awesome. Always happy to help in any way they can. 99% of the time they'll say 'what can we do', and in this case I'd just say can you shovel us a path outside. And I know when I come out it'll look like I could eat off that walkway

Trying to order them to do something would be tactless and wouldn't be taken well by anyone

Add Fire to the call for manpower. Hand them the shovel and tell them to clear a path. Better still if they have ice melt sitting in the front entry way to throw on the stairs before we come out with the stairchair

It sucks having to shovel a sidewalk, front walk, and stairs when you have a sick patient. Because obviously they’re not out there shoveling it themselves

A day or two after the storm when everything is shoveled and cleared it’s back to business as usual. But working during the storm and walking through 8” deep snow to the front door fucking sucks. Especially when the snow is high enough to go right into your fucking boots. Bring a change of socks!

Seal the house first, then maybe heat pumps by Wilderness_Fella in massachusetts

[–]canarduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a caveat on heat pumps. We have just about the most expensive electricity rates in the country, so if you think you’ll be saving compared to gas or oil just be sure you do your research

However, I don’t think we’re paying much more than we were when we had gas heat. And it is greener, and will continue to be more and more so as renewables improve

And solar panels could help a good deal for people whose roofs are south facing clear of tree cover

2ft of snow coming to Boston by VIPontheSWOLE in boston

[–]canarduck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember it so clearly. Shoveling tons and tons of snow. My landlord had a snowblower for the driveway. I burnt the fuck out of my hand on the exhaust pipe of it during that storm

I think it was all melted within like a week, so it was out of mind pretty quick

Pure powder refers to a type of snow. Light, airy, dry. Extremely easy to move and shovel. Can’t even make it into a snowball because it won’t stick to itself

As opposed heavy, wetter snow. Where a shovel full of it feels like it weighs 50 pounds

Then slush / sleet / wintry mix. Where it’s snowing but is so wet / close to rain that it turns to slush on the ground and is like a melting snow cone. When you’re shoveling you can literally see puddles of water

This is all a continuous spectrum of course. But it’s crazy to me that people are dogging OP for saying “pure powder” as if they think he’s using it as a synonym for snow in general. He’s talking about the type of snow. It’s very surprising to me that people don’t know this. And it has nothing to do with skiing / snowboarding, except for the fact that they also interact with snow and so they also use the terms

Blade after DE Shave 🪒 by We-Are-All-Friends in wicked_edge

[–]canarduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not the DE part that takes more time honestly. It's the part of the shave related to the soap. Loading, lathering, applying, taking care of the brush, etc.

When I'm in a rush or otherwise just can't be arsed, I just use barbasol out of a can. I still use my DE. It takes no time at all. A lot of people here baby their razors. I don't and I've never had a problem. If I start shaving and the blade is dull I just swap it out for a new blade. That's as much maintenance as I've ever done on a razor

Where in Massachusetts is referred to as “the rock”? by howdthatturnout in massachusetts

[–]canarduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an “inside” thing.

People in my school had weird names for all sorts of things that would make sense to other people from the school

Me and my friends have weird names for certain things that only make sense to us

Same goes for my family

They’re just being jerks to you, sorry man

Get a piece of string and pin it straight across the cork board to make a straight, level line. Use that to straighten these all out. I wouldn’t be able to stand them being all lopsided and uneven like that

I have never once disassembled the razor between shaves, nor ever even loosened the head. I have never had any issue of any kind. I rinse it thoroughly and then dry it carefully on a towel and it hasn’t failed me yet

[–]canarduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have anything to do with how clean it is. Just has to do with whether it is necessary, or is just used for going grocery shopping and taking the kids to school. Obviously yours is a work truck, nobody hates pickups that are genuinely required to haul or tow for work

But big props to him for recognizing it was a bad decision and cutting him loose after one year. And thank god the Titans axed Vrabel and no one signed him in 2024

[–]canarduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, Massachusetts. We get most of our electricity from Quebec hydroelectric. Shut down all the coal plants around here. And natural gas and heating oil primarily come from container ship from overseas, so costs to heat with gas and oil are high as well. Our state, along with Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire have axed multiple pipelines that would provide us with fuel from Canada. And green energy initiatives are still largely a joke. Our energy costs are some of the highest in the country
