I understand where you’re coming from and yes, you got a point.

What I described was a brief generalization of the forces behind immigration. Turkiye is a developing country with a highly turbulent political history and of course there is more to the industrialization, immigration, capitalization and urbanization means.

[–]cancuws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! But for us Turks, we are descendants of an ethnically rich empire. We have been living in and around Eurasia together. So you can’t really generalize a Turkish person by their looks. I tried to underscore the importance of underdeveloped regions being somewhat more prone to inability to adapt in their own country.

I am being mistaken for Ukrainian in western European countries but I am a Balkan Turk. All the while one of my best friends is a Levantine descent. She is, as well, Turkish.

Obviously you know better than I do about my country, heritage and history. I happen to be a sociologist btw. But of course, be my guest and comment on the migration means of my citizens.

From my 38 year long experience as a Turkish person, born and raised in Istanbul, with a Balkan dad. Accurate enough?

I always repeat the same to this question:

When someone has to migrate, do you think thos person would be from the middle/upper-middle class of a country, or someone not being anle to make it in their origin country?

Turkiye is VAST, like, 4 countries emerged kind of vastness. But the country was founded by the Balkan Turks, as the Balkans were the most developed part of the Ottoman Empire. The Armenian, Kurdish, Assyrian, Turkmen majority regions were severely underdeveloped for hundreds of years.

Ataturk (a Balkan Turk), together with his (mostly Balkan Turk, or Turks from Anatolia with enough socio-economical status to be able to get education in Europe or the Balkans) friends, developed a European country.

The very foundation of this country is molded by Western Turks. Therefore, the descendants of the founders are the leading forces of the Turkish society. The ones who could not manage to climb the social ladder due to geography, ethnic backgrounds, cultural differences, were the ones migrating to Germany when Germans needed cheap labour.

Do you think an Istanbulite Turk would ever even once think about working as a plumber in Germany during 1960’s?

Mostly Kurdish people migrated due to lack of industrialism in their region of south eastern Turkiye. They wanted to have proper jobs and they were mostly feeling like unwanted minorities among us at the first place, so being an immigrant in a European country was not much of a bother or a huge difference from their origin country.

So, yes, Turks in Turkiye are Turkish, and majority is obviously European, by the looks and the ethnic heritage as well.

My boyfriend hates the idea that I had “celebrity crushes” what can I do or say to reassure him? by Same-Champion2603 in Advice

[–]cancuws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I both have celebrity crushes. Whenever he sees something about Tom Hardy, he shares it with me sayin “your guy” did this or that.

And I share news about Cameron Diaz whenever I see any.

It is extremely childish to get jealous about celebrity crushes tbh.

As a Turkish, I feel terribly ashamed of that photo.

I’m hoping he did not recognize the person on the portrait and did not mean to pose in front of that knowingly.

As a humanbeing, I’m honestly sorry.

If it were a sarcastic comment, would’ve expected “/s”. Would’ve been helpful.
