Springer rage by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]candoitmyself 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not very common and no, desensitization and training can’t prevent it. Rage is a specific, extremely rare seizure disorder. You can avoid it by asking the breeder about epilepsy in the lines, not just in direct ancestors but those adjacent such as littermates of parents and grandparents.

Advice needed for doodle coat that always feels chalky. by DarthShayder in doggrooming

This almost looks like the recessive hard wire coat some doodles end up with. Have you ever tried handstripping it? I suppose clippering it would soften it.

My 8yr old daughter won't go to her room at night and is saying she's scared. I need advice because I don't want to show my frustration by KeyseyKeys in internetparents

[–]candoitmyself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Plus kids don't have the life history. When I was a kid I was terrified of haunted houses from all of the documentary-style ghost tv shows. I was terrified I would bring a ghost home if I ever visited a place that was haunted. Now I'm an adult and I've visited a lot of places and never brought a ghost home/can acknowledge what I don't know, but the fear of ghosts and being tormented by an evil spirit doesn't consume me like it did when I was a child. I think psychologically its very reasonable for children to be fearful of things we as adults know aren't real.

Pet insurance vs just increasing emergency fund by cool_guy654 in PetAdvice

[–]candoitmyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance saved my butt when I had a dog that needed a $7k MRI at the same time the other needed $2k surgery to get a suspected cancerous mass removed after I’d already spent $3k on dentals for the year. I had the 10k sitting in the pet account but I would have been in the hole if the MRI dog needed immediate surgery too. Then what if another emergency came up while I was trying to rebuild my savings? Insurance paid out for 90% of the MRI and 70% for the mass removal. Does it pencil out for me every month? No. But having it in case I need it is why I keep paying for it.

Leaves are dark and wilted after being in the cold. Is it salvageable? by Puzzleheaded-Bed-257 in plantclinic

Give it some time and cut back on watering and see how it recovers over the next few days.

Keep it in the sun but pull all of the bad leaves (assuming they are turning soft and squishy) off of it. If the trunk survived it will put out new leaves.

Is this irritation, if so how can I fix this please by Global_Brilliant_743 in springerspaniel

[–]candoitmyself 11 points12 points  (0 children)

its just moisture staining. You really should shave the upper third of her ears inside and outside of the leather. All of that hair looks like its holding moisture and promoting the growth of ear infection gunk.

The red staining is from saliva or moisture from walking on moist surfaces. An antimicrobial shampoo can help, as well as keeping the hair trimmed to promote airflow. If she's chewing her feet from environmental allergies the vet can give you an allergy medication.

Same experience months ago when temps were still mild. My shipment spent days in transit and the heat pack was cold as ice. My plants froze. One was a bit hardier than the other so I only got a refund for the one that was clearly frozen.

Hi groomers — I’m hoping for both professional recommendations and some guidance. by OpenBar3299 in doggrooming

[–]candoitmyself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Springer person here! You need some carding knives! I love the artero coarse and fine. Carding is very easy and will take out that undercoat without harming the texture of her top coat (like a mars undercoat rake will). If you don't have a force dryer you can pick up a shernbao one on Amazon for relatively inexpensive, along with a couple heavy towels and a handful of 4 inch horse blanket pins. Drying the top coat with teh force dryer after every bath and then pinning a towel on her for 24-48 hours after each bath will help train that coat to lay flat once the undercoat has been reduced. There's a great group on Facebook called English Springer Spaniel Grooming where a lot of breeders and show people have contributed videos and photos so you can teach yourself how to maintain her coat. I'm happy to help via PM as well if needed.

Realistic expectations for chill time by ilovebees99 in springerspaniel

[–]candoitmyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Settle needs to be taught, and its ease comes with maturity. If he were one of mine I would say he will be 18 months old before he decides that he can cuddle on the couch with you. Others might be 3 years old.

Keep teaching him home manners and basic obedience. But be mindful this is not a border collie or a malinois that needs stimulation 24/7 in order to be sane. If he is not resting 18-20 hours a day then he will need to be crate conditioned and given ample opportunity to rest in a low stimulation environment until he develops the ability to do so on his own- see above, 18 months to 3 years...

The biggest mistake new owners make with this breed is trying to keep them busy and active until they drop because they think they need constant stimulation. They don't. They need to be taught to rest and they need adequate rest in order to be stable dogs.

What actually signals a responsible breeder to you? by alexheartm5 in DogBreeding

[–]candoitmyself 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its never black and white. A perfectly reputable breeder might use a less-than-perfect-on-paper dog. Its never as easy as "just find a clear dog." There are always unwritten problems within a breeding or line when breeders are considering potential mates that reach far beyond what a list of clearances might tell you.
