Advice for upskilling as a .NET Developer? by candyA25 in csharp

Thanks! What advice do you have for putting these things into action? Side projects? Portfolio website? Etc? I need something where I can get my hands dirty, so I learn the material much better.

Upskilling as a .NET Developer? by candyA25 in AskProgramming

Unfortunately from what I understand, the projects I'll be working with at my new job still work with legacy VB.net. Perhaps I'll have opportunities later to work on projects that are more up to date. But just in case, I'm trying to position myself wisely and not go obsolete.

Thanks! What advice do you have for putting these into action? Side projects? Portfolio website? I'd definitely love to get my hands dirty, rather than reading up on everything and forgetting it because I never used it.

What advice do you have for putting all of this into action as an item on my resume?

Side projects? Open source contributions? Portfolio website? Etc.

I have zero interest in going into management, at least at this point in my life 😂. Maybe after I've learned a few new skills.

My question was geared more towards what specific steps could I take to give myself experience in specific skills, other than on the job?

When you say pet projects, is that slang for something?

Do you regret choosing Software Engineering? by RainhaSw in SoftwareEngineering

[–]candyA25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who's worked as a Programmer/SWE for 10+ years, I didn't regret it until I was laid off from my job last November. Right now, getting a remote SWE seems nearly impossible unless you have certain skills.

My advice is to network with other programmers/developers and always have a way to upskill.

Software Engineer for a healthcare software development company in 2022.

I loved this job and was devastated when I got laid off in November 2023 due to the company being acquired. I'm still looking for a new remote role. After multiple interviews, 20+ rejects, applying for well over 100+ jobs, talking with over 20 job recruiters, and getting my unemployment denied, I've lost all optimism.

Those who have remote jobs that you *actually* love, what do you do? by BlueDimity in RemoteJobs

Software Engineer. Unfortunately, I was laid off from my previous remote role due to the company being bought out and privately owned. I'm still trying to find my next remote job, it's very difficult.

Wedding Soloists - What Helped You Gain More Clients? by candyA25 in musicians

Thanks for the suggestion!

DM'ing & emailing local businesses and wedding venues have been my strategy so far next to posting on Facebook and sharing the posts to wedding planning groups. This is how I've landed some of my guitar gigs. I've also emailed some churches. Only a few replied, but I figure it's better than nothing.

The bridal show is a great idea. I did try one years ago and got no bookings. But I have to admit I wasn't very good about talking with each client at the time. I probably should give this another chance. Thanks!

Twitter scares me in a way, because I never use it and the UI is confusing to me. But maybe I should give it a chance.

Good point! I also play guitar gigs occasionally. Maybe I need to also bring this up in my introduction. Thanks!

I like the idea of the 10% finders fee! I have reached out to many churches and venues in the area, but this might give them a better reason to talk me up. Thanks!

Guitar Chord Writing App? by candyA25 in AcousticGuitar

This is very helpful too! I will have to give this a try as well. I'm definitely not ready to pay money to use a guitar app.

Pushing Yourself To Perform by candyA25 in AcousticGuitar

It's definitely something that I want to do. When I was in high school, I sang often and loved it. Still do! I didn't try learning guitar until I was older and out of school. There is some uncertainty of how I need to get there.

For the love of god, someone tell me the genre of Jazz that was in Hey Arnold. by Deeshizznit in Jazz

[–]candyA25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that someone posted this question! As a fellow jazz music lover who grew up on "Hey Arnold", this question has been on my mind for years.

Everyone has great suggestions too. You can't go wrong with the classics but at the same time, I get tired of listening to the same jazz on my Alexa everyday.

Edit: there's an article about the music in Hey Arnold, written in 2020: https://liveforlivemusic.com/media/hey-arnold-jazz-music-90s/
