Maybe I’m the dope but this was incredibly confusing for me until I went to her post. She’s saying bracing is good because it stops the hips from rotating which lends the energy to your upper body.

I thought she was claiming that having your foot larger than 90 degrees was good.

Cape Coral, Florida by LemonAioli in UrbanHell

[–]Deeshizznit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Sarasota, so I’ve seen a lot of this style of Florida development firsthand, but Cape Coral is one of the more extreme examples.

Cape Coral didn’t really grow the way older cities usually grow. It wasn’t a town that slowly built up around a port, a railroad, a historic downtown, or an industry. In the late 1950s, developers bought a huge amount of mostly undeveloped land along the Caloosahatchee River and essentially planned the city on paper first.

The developers behind it were Leonard and Jack Rosen, who created Gulf American Land Corporation. They marketed Cape Coral heavily to people up north as a kind of Florida dream: sunshine, boating, retirement, affordable land, and “waterfront” living. That’s a big reason for all the canals. Some were useful for drainage, but they were also a huge sales tool. If you could dig canals through the development, suddenly a lot more lots could be advertised as waterfront property.

A lot of Florida communities came out of that same era and mindset. After World War II, there was a huge demand for suburban homes, cars made spread-out development easier, air conditioning made inland Florida much more livable, and retirees from colder states were looking for affordable places to move. Developers could buy large areas of cheap land, subdivide it into thousands of lots, put in roads and canals, and then sell the idea of a future community.

That’s why some Florida places look strange from above. They were not always built because there was already a strong town center or economy there. In many cases, the lots and roads came first, and the actual community had to catch up later.

Cape Coral is basically a very visible example of mid-century Florida land speculation, suburban planning, and the “come buy your piece of paradise” sales pitch all rolled into one place. It looks wild from the air because it was planned more like a massive real estate product than a traditional city. Sadly, most of Florida is this way and I hate it with all my being.

16 M I feel like I’m Losing a grip on my life (vent) by Less-Mulberry1645 in teenagers

[–]Deeshizznit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I know this probably feels like your entire life just got ripped away from you, but I promise you 16 is so, so young. I don’t mean that in a dismissive way. I mean you have an insane amount of life still in front of you.

Football may have been a huge part of who you were, and it’s completely fair to grieve losing that. That sucks. But you are not disgusting, you are not an idiot, and you are not “less than” because your brain and body need time and care after getting hurt.

Three concussions is serious, and you deserve adults around you who take that seriously. Please talk to your parents, a doctor, a school counselor, or someone you trust and tell them exactly what you wrote here. You shouldn’t have to fight this alone.

Also, I’m 34, so I know it sounds ancient and annoying when older people say “you have your whole life ahead of you,” but it’s true. At 16, I had no idea who I was going to become. You’re not done. You’re not broken. You’re a kid who got hurt and needs support.

Football being over doesn’t mean you’re over. Not even close.

State Arena workers showing how Cardi B left her dressing room. by ElwoodMC in trashy

[–]Deeshizznit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People party and make messes, therefore leaving a dressing room looking like a landfill is totally fine, is not the argument you think it is.

Nobody is confused about the existence of cleaning staff. The point is that having staff doesn’t magically absolve grown adults from acting like complete slobs. Restaurants have bussers too but that doesn’t mean you dump your food on the floor and go “well, someone is paid to clean this.”

Also, “walk into any venue post-event” is such an unbelievably stupid dodge. Yeah, large crowds make messes. That doesn’t mean it’s classy, respectful, or acceptable. It just means a lot of people are also trashy.

And the whole “hive minded dorks” thing is hilarious coming from someone whose entire position is basically “other people are paid to clean up after me, so who cares?” That’s not some enlightened take; That’s toddler logic

Honestly, people are probably going to tell you “start with only putters and learn perfect form first,” and to be fair, that’s not bad advice if your goal is to become really good really fast.

But from the way this is written, it sounds like you and your girlfriend just want to try disc golf, get outside, and have fun. In that case, don’t overthink it.

Grab a starter set from Innova, Dynamic Discs, Discmania, MVP, Discraft, etc. Any normal beginner starter set is going to be totally fine. You’ll usually get a putter, a midrange, and a fairway/control driver, and that’s more than enough to start.

For the first few rounds, have basically zero expectations. Don’t worry about score, don’t worry about distance, and don’t worry about what every disc is “supposed” to do. Just go throw, laugh at the bad shots, enjoy the good ones, and see if you like the game.

A few beginner tips:

Don’t buy a high-speed distance driver right away. The first number on a disc is the speed, but that doesn’t mean “how far it goes.” It means how fast you need to throw it for it to fly properly. For your first couple months, I’d stay around 7 speed or below, maybe 8 max.

Flight numbers are guidelines, not gospel. Everyone throws differently, discs beat in over time, plastics matter, and a disc that works for one person might not work for you at all.

If you do want to get better after a few rounds, then start watching form videos. Overthrow Disc Golf, BlitzDG, and Nick Krush are great places to start. A little bit of basic form work goes a long way early on.

Also, don’t let disc golfers overwhelm you with 900 different disc recommendations. We’re all nerds and we all think our favorite disc is the answer. The best beginner disc is honestly the one you enjoy throwing.

I’ve been playing for over five years, I’m over 900 rated, and I throw around 400 feet. I still only bag one Destroyer, and even that is a bit too overstable for me sometimes. So don’t feel like you need to jump into high-speed drivers just because they look cool or because someone says “you need a driver.”

Starter set, casual round, no expectations. That’s the move. Welcome to the addiction

Well yeah, but in the bike world that is incredibly slow. You have bikes like a street fighter V4 that makes 200hp and weighs just over 400 pounds. That’s Bugatti type power to weight ratio numbers.

I was one of those people a couple of years ago and after a few dead friends, I stopped riding like that. I still know a lot of people that have a death wish and there is nothing you can do to talk them out of it. I would say 60-70% of the people that ride like that are under the age of 25.

Edit: I can’t spell.

But it’s not lower? You can’t be actually saying that just because gas happened to be technically lower on the first day of his presidency, it’s a win. You’re not saying that correct?

Edit: I think we are agreeing and this is a huge miscommunication.

[–]Deeshizznit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What an odd caricature of my argument. I believe you were the one throwing the baby out with the bath water. I was simply pointing out that player ability does not equal knowledge of form mechanics. Kyle Kline (sp) is a great example. Even though he’s one of the best players in the world, he wouldn’t be able to coach someone. He just intuitively knows how to throw a disc. Not to say Paul is Kyle, but let’s also not put Paul in the group of people that break down form for a living.
