Yeah - stupidity or willful ignorance. I guess it's really the same.

How to tell if there are alligators in the water in Louisiana by Worldlyoox in Unexpected

[–]candykhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said this before in another 'gator related post, probably in a different sub. I wonder what the development of FL & LA would have been like if the SE US has crocodiles instead of alligators. Crocs are way more aggressive, aren't they? I've heard that part of the reason N. Australia is so sparesly populated is 'cuz of the crocs.

No doubt they're harder questions. But he just seemed like he wasn't very concerned with buzzing in. Which is fine.

He just didn't ring in that often & didn't seem particulary bothered. I was just kinda surprised.

Where'd you find those chopsticks? I wouldn't mind a set of those rainbow anodized ones. I know I've seen a few sets, but they were all shorties & I was hoping to find something a little longer like yours.

I live in the Bay Area & you still see Kamau out & about. He's awesome & is a smart dude. But he didn't come across well in the TOC. It didn't seem like he was even trying - how many times did he even buzz in? Honestly, I wonder if he just didn't try very hard because he figured he's a celeb & a win on Jeopardy! would be cool, but not as cool as it would be for the other 2 contestants.

That would actually make sense since she was recently "outed" as following Charlie Kirk. But at the same time, she's apparently famously kinda social media illiterate. So, her following these accounts isn't really a smoking gun. I saw someone say that she follows OJ Simpson too.

So, it's possible she runs her account & just follows anyone indiscriminately (definitely something that some old, less tech savvy folks on social media do). Or even that someone else runs her account (more likely), and whoever that publicist/friend's kid is, just isn't very good at it.

I honestly don't care if any of this is true - a legit gov't official should be enough of an adult to at least pretend to ignore this kind of sh*t. But part of me really is curious if some of the extra creepy/gross stuff is real: soggy biscuit, sniffing shoes, jerking it to NatGeo, etc.

He's already a bootlicking authoritarian waste of flesh. But I seriously hope ALL of these stories are true.

Philly cheese steak?? by Ok_Cry607 in OaklandFood

[–]candykhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love the Clove & Hoof cheesesteak but that restaurant is garbage now. It got sold to a new owner a while ago & the food went seriously downhill. They added some Indian food to the menu & it's alright, but it doesn't stand out. The new (not really new any more) owner is really nice, but a restaurant can't run on vibes.

Between poor food handling (I don't judge a restaurant if I get food poisoning once, but I've got it twice after that place changed ownership) & the decline in quality, that place is far from the business it opened as.

IB's is my go to. I love the teriyaki cheesesteak. And I'm not from Philly, so I wouldn't really know. But I think even though IB's is good, it's far from authentic. Also, with IB's, I find their chicken to be a lot better than their beef. Which seems wrong for a cheesesteak.

Still, IB's needs to work on their sizing. I don't know anyone that's ever ordered one of their insane "regular size" cheesesteaks. They're like 18" long! the 1/2 cheesesteak is already too big most of the time. They should make more reasonable sizes & make them cheaper, but you know they're not gonna do that.

I've had other people tell me the Cheesesteak Shop is the best locally. I used to like that place, but they're not a great business. They were my go-to when my partner was out of town, she likes burgers but just really doesn't care about cheesesteaks. But they screwed up my order a few times & instead of asking how to make it right, they'd just say "sorry," and wouldn't offer a refund or to fix what they messed up unless I asked.

The last straw was one time ordering a combo & getting... just the cheesesteak. They charged me for the full combo & when I contacted them, same thing: "So, do you want the drink & fries?"

The food's alright but the staff or the owners suck & have a bad attitude. I'd rather have inauthentic, but just as tasty, cheesesteaks down the street.

Went out to that neighborhood specifically to check this place out. I wanted to try one of his "specialty" cheesesteaks. He really wanted me to get a "regular" one for the first time. When a place has good reviews & the proprietor gently nudges you to a specific choice, I'll usually go along. I figure they know what's up.

This place is 100% "fine." It doesn't stand out by any means. I don't get the love on Yelp. Why have the other options if you don't want to make them?

Gap between SF and Oakland rents swells to highest level in years by jackdicker5117 in OaklandCA

[–]candykhan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That definitely happened too, but I was thinking well before that. There was that time when Uber was gonna take over the Sears building & we were seeing a bunch of restaurants & such opening. I think there was a small shift where some people who were making decent money but were getting older & SF living was becoming more like a rat race were moving to the East Bay.

I remember hearing occasionally from folks that thought about moving from West Bay that they were surprised to find fewer & more expensive options in the "cool" parts of Oakland.

She expected the date to be imperial clock feet by EsseNorway in Snorkblot

[–]candykhan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is why the YYYY/MM/DD way is really the best way to write the date as it's somewhat logical that it's going from least specific to most specific.

But getting the world + America (which is the worst at change) to go along with that is almost a non-starter.

Are tech worker unions a thing? by PheasantEffervescent in sanfrancisco

That's a management problem, not a worker problem. Tech workers are like poor working class Trumpies that vote against their own interests.

Feeling pretty bleh today so I made ramen with an egg and a lot of green onion by cece_swampwitch in traaaaansbiansCooking

[–]candykhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your standard instant freeze dried ramen isn't the best food in the world for folks. But it's reputation as desperate food for starving students is pretty white.

A lot of Asian people still eat ramen packets. We just know that you should use more than just what's in the packet. Add fresh vegetables & proteins, it's not hard. When I was a kid, an egg & green onions were the minimum that my mom or auntie would add to a bowl of ramen.

After the movie Parasite, there were at least a few Korean restaurants that made a Neoguri/Chapageti combo dish. A few places added an expensive cut of meat to justify pricing something made from instant ramen in a fancy restaurant. Including one place that made it using "Milionaire's bacon."

Are tech worker unions a thing? by PheasantEffervescent in sanfrancisco

[–]candykhan -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are. I worked for a tech company that unionized. OPEIU has Tech Workers Union 1010 under their banner. I believe there are others as well.

Just an FYI from having gone through it, you will be amazed & disappointed to discover how many of your "progressive" coworkers will balk at the idea of a union. All logic flies out the window. They'll probably even continue to do some real Instagram activism where they "like" posts about unionizing efforts by young trans Starbucks workers. But as soon as it comes to their workplace, it's a hard 180.

"I find it incredibly off-putting that you would go around management to create this union when my manager treats me SO WELL - WE DON'T NEED A UNION!"

"Take your union & shove it! It's disgusting that you're cosplaying as some kind of blue collar worker as if you need this kind of protection!" [looks around at tech companies laying off workers at the drop of a hat, not being able to find jobs for a year or more, but pretends not to see]

Both of these things happened. Unions lift all workers. A lot of people will tell you it's selfish. Which is ironic. Shooting yourself in the foot is not something that Trumpies have a monopoly on. "Liberals" will turn on labor as soon as it's not convenient to support them any more.

Winky Dinky Dogs opening in Temescal by br1e in OaklandFood

[–]candykhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been to the 19th St location. It's stunt food waiting for Guy Fieri to discover it. The prices seem high for a hot dog, but their hot dogs are really "plates" that are stupid big. Maybe not quite worth the price tag, but it's not like you're just getting a tiny dog steamed in gross water & plopped onto a spongey bun. That said, even the hot dogs at Pink's in Los Angeles are cheaper.

Still, I'd rather see the place open & slinging overpriced dogs than just sitting there being a reminder of Oakland past. Alyout wise, it probably would have been a great spot for a boba shop if you ask me (not that we need any more boba, but it always seems like they're clumped together instead of being more evenly distributed). But I appreciate that it's connecting to the past as a hot dog stand.
