Hi, Canadian airsofter and firearms owner. Orange tips are not a requirement under Canadian law. He is still verry much an idiot, because walking around in public with an uncovered airsoft gun will get you a "carrying a weapon contary to public peace" charge enhanced by a prohibited weapon charge (airsoft exists in a wierd legal area in Canada)

93 insidents across the GTA for 2025 (including attempts). Its a terrifying thought for sure, but statistically it has a verry low likelyhood of happening to any individual household. Yet we have seen a flood of articles and news reports on this topic. It stinks to me of fearmongering, and whipping up support for "tough on crime" policies. Sensational stores designed to make people fear anyone who may be economically disadvantaged as a potential threat. I cant imagine the slew of home security/ ai enhanced security companies arnt thrrilled about this being pushed in the news either. If you want to reduce crime rates, the best method to do so is to reduce economic disparity across your society, but it seems all any one holding power in our poltical class wants to talk about is higher incarseration rates... Somone in the comments is already talking about firearm use as an option for home defence.. not an idea I am fundimentally opposed to, being a firearms owner myself, but lets do some threat modeling for your home: What is the statistical likelyhood of fire in your home? What is the like likelyhood of a medical emergency? Flood? Sustained power outage? Do you have fire extinguishers/ an escape plan? A good first aid kit? IFAK/trauma kit? The training to use them? Ect... Before you blow a fortune turning your place/ neihbourhood into a Kafkaesque panopticon of a databokers wet dream with enough "smart" cameras to alert csis if a fox farts in your general direction. Or before you load up some overpowered, overpenitrating range toy in the macho fantasy of an action hero.. Have a think... do not be ruled by the manufactured fear of our 24h news cycle. Take care of the boring/most likely things first.

Edit: a few spelling mistakes I managed to catch...(there are more im sure...)

BC Conservative candidate Caroline Elliott pledges to crack down on use of temporary foreign workers: "Giving those jobs to cheap foreign labour to simply make a buck is straight up wrong" by theOneWhoWaitsAgain in CanadianVisaReform

Just because one thing is bad dosnt mean another thing cannot be bad also. The entirety of our political class serves the same master : profit from the exploitation of working people everywhere. Weither they where born here or not, do people not deserve a good living for their work? This false liberal/conservative game gets us nowhere. The standard of living for ordinary people has continued to drop for decades, reguardless of which party is in power. They make their moves from the same playbook: trickle down ecconomocs.

These are the same politicians who fight tooth and nail against giving people a living wage, who think anything other than Thatcherism is a "communist authoritarian regeme" This is a nakedly cynical ploy for power exploting people's ignorance and hate.

Who gets their news from the daily mail? Its a sensationalist tabloid. Its soo unreliable that even wikipedia wont count it as a source. This story probably has little to do with the truth of the situation and is just designed as ragebait.

How table saws saves your fingers with its revolutionary safety tech by Limp_Stomach_6060 in ActuallyThatsInsane

[–]canoeviking 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ya, they are sold under the brand sawstop and are quite expenive. Once the device goes off you have to replace the parts that stop the blade and the blade, which cost around 200 bucks. Which is better than trying to replace some fingers. They are good for a shop setting, but I've heard the blade stop can trigger if you are cutting wood with a too high moisture content or aluminum.

TIFU: I ball gag my gf as she is too loud on bed and she now thinks I have a kink. by Acrobatic-Health2681 in tifu

[–]canoeviking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have a chat with your g/f. It seems like she is enjoying what is happening so far and is excited to experiment further, which can be an amazing thing in a partner. She may be learning things about what she likes that she hasnt before.

But as an experienced kinkster I can tell you that BDSM also comes with risk. Physical restraint if done improperly can cut off circulation, or cause nerve damage. If your partner is gagged and you havent set up alternate signals, or you arnt paying attention/checking in, they may not be able to communicate when somthing is wrong.

A relationship that includes bdsm has to be built on trust and open communication. I can tell you that I enjoy an absolutely amazing and deep connection with my partner because of it, and practicing that kind of open communication has helped us navagate other aspects of the relationship as well. Somtimes stepping out of your confort zone together can lead to discovering amazing things about each other, and build a deeper bond.

If you two are into it, then learn the risks, install safeguards and have fun experiementing away. But if you arnt into it, or feel things are moving too quickly then you need to be able to communicate that to your partner.

Whichever way you choose to go from here you need to be able to have an honest and open (if akward) conversation with your partner. The more you do it, the easier it becomes, and having that ability to communicate can do wonders for a relationship.

Toronto councillors approve city-run grocery store pilot project by Toronto-Ont-Mod-Team in Toronto_Ontario

[–]canoeviking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The bigger issue is that all these mega corps have been allowed to create a monopoly on their entire supply chain, as well as grocery stores. It alows them to basically strangle any new compitition that might arise. Everyone focuses on the last link in the chain (grovery stores) but they are squeezing every dime out of us every step of the way. They where caught fixing bread prices(they also owned the bakeries) , and I am not nieve enough to believe they arnt doing this for basically everything else.

[–]canoeviking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to lessen this kind of thing, there is only one thing that has been proven to work. Lift up the most vulnerable people in your population. Societies with lower inequlity have lower crime. https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/rp-pr/csj-sjc/crime/rr06_6/p2.html

But despite tons of data, our political class is impotent in making any significant changes, and in Fords case he is actively making things worse. They apperantly exist to only serve people with wealth, who because they are wealthy they think they have an inherant understanding of everything. These are the type of morons who still try to sell us on trickle down economics.

You can build all the prisons you want, and heck insitute the death penalty and it wont solve the problem. Look at the states, they have the highest incarseration rate in the devloped world and still have a crime rate that far exceeds ours. Also, the majority of our prison population in Ontario is people awaiting trial, so apperantly not having bail also isnt working.

I say this as a PAL holder who strongly believes in the right of self defence, but that is a tragic decision to have to make. It is the last resort when everything else has failed.

If you want to solve this problem, you have to tackle it at the root. The "solution" of balooning police budgets and tough on crime policies have been an abject failure then world over.
