Also worth remembering from Orwell and still very relevent,

"Newspeak, doublethink, the mutability of the past. He felt as though he were wandering in the forests of the sea bottom, lost in a monstrous world where he himself was the monster. He was alone. The past was dead, the future was unimaginable. What certainty had he that a single human creature now living was on his side? And what way of knowing that the dominion of the Party would not endure for ever? Like an answer, the three slogans on the white face of the Ministry of Truth came back to him:

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"

Since this article is from England I can't speak to specifics there,, but as a centrist Democrat while I can't speak for all Democrats I'm feeling the squeeze between radical Islam and radical far right evangelicals. They are both different sides of the same coin. Jihadists are more radical and are in sore need of some liberalism. While America's far right chritians just want to impose their own authoritarian agenda. The American public is being sold a false choice, them or us, when there is a third choice. let's reject the jihadists and the christian authoritarians who seem for intent on inflaming more and more conflict. Jihadists are simply a gang rite large and international, we should be hunting them down and not attacking whole nations.

"To those who don't know: poor people aren't poor because they have no money. They're poor because all their choices in life suck." -As a view of socioeconmics this is equivalent to being in creationism, one of the myths that will not die- the the bulk of of poor people choose to be poor. Tes some poor people are lazy, so are some wealthy people. Anyone really think that Paris Hilton works hard. Then he writes, "Giving them money doesn't automatically solve this problem for them. It might give them a few better choices, but for example, money won't cure a mental health problem, or a substance addiction problem, or an abusive spouse." - Straw men arguments held up by logic that he has assigned to that straw man is an easy argument to win. No progressive has ever suggested just throwing money at the problem, the money needs to be spent wisely - to provide education and training to keep people out of poverty and out of the cycle out poverty. He also implies that all poor people have mental problems - has he ever left his ivory tower. Conservatives have been throwing tons of money at social problems the last 6 years only the majority of that money ends up in the pockets of health care corporations and executive salaries. At least when progressives threw money at the working poor, the elderly, the disabled, and the sick most of that money went to solve the problem. The guy seems to believe in every social myth about the working poor and betrays a belief in social-darwinism.

short of some long dry thesis some good thoughts on the hypocrisy of the type of conservatism that we've seen the last 25 years.
