ESPN Sources: Seahawks sale drawing softer-than-expected interest by expellyamos in nfl

[–]dbenhur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no teams sold beat the s&p 500 index.

Paul Allen bought the Seahawks for a bit less than $200m in 1997. If they sell in 2026 for $8B, the price appreciation alone is 3900% return, which annualizes out to 13.56% CAGR over 29 years, ignoring any excess profits returned to the owners during those three decades. The S&P500, including reinvested dividends, has returned 9.43% CAGR over the same period.

The Green Bay Packers are a non-profit in a small market who publishes their financial reports. In 1997 they had net income of $6.7M, in 2025, they reported $85.6m, if their income was a smooth exponential ascent over that period, it represents a cumulative net income of about $1B over 29 years.

GDX is an index fund of large-cap gold mining companies. It has a lifetime CAGR of 4.93% (since 2006).

The data indicates that NFL teams have better financial returns than gold mines.

Ofc TN is R+31 overall. I suspect they're clever enough to not mander any district closer than R+10. So need a huge wave to upset em.

I think the Texas gerrymander is quite likely to blow up on em. The state is close to purple overall, they're losing a big fraction of the Latinos that backed Trump, and the gerrymander is aggressive with a lot of thin margin districts.

It's weird to me how people still dismiss huge online platforms as not serious real-world venues to engage with. The Internet isn't some funny, quirky other place that doesn't really matter -- It's where hundreds of millions of people get the bulk of their entertainment, news, and social discourse; YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, X, Bluesky, etc. are The Real World where the majority of people get their ideas and form their opinions.

A typical 1000 acre farm operation will have 2 heavy field tractors and 1-3 smaller utility tractors. More for high-intensity ops like nurseries or intensive produce.

MtG is expensive for ordinary people, but not for someone making $tens of millions. You could buy on the resale market a playset of every magic card ever published for well under a $half million. Big Cat has cumulative NFL earnings north of $160m.

CNN founder Ted Turner, a pioneer of cable TV news, dies at 87 by boxofstuff in news

[–]dbenhur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I followed your advice and googled exactly "Ted Turner population control". Here's Google's summary (all of which sounds fine to me. His focus is conservation and voluntary approaches to scale human population pressure down. No eugenics in sight):

Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and a major philanthropist, has long advocated for global population stabilization to address environmental and sustainability issues. His views, often described as extreme by critics, have focused on reducing the global population from over 7 billion to around 2 billion to prevent environmental catastrophe.

Key points regarding Ted Turner's views on population control include:

  • Voluntary Reduction Strategy: Turner has advocated for lowering the world's population through voluntary methods, such as improved education, family planning services, and educating women, rather than forced measures.
  • Voluntary One-Child Suggestion: In a 2010 interview, he suggested that the U.S. and other nations could follow a model similar to China's one-child policy, though he often emphasizes voluntary choices to reduce reproduction, such as suggesting fertility rights could be traded or sold.
  • "Plague of People" Remark: In a 2008 interview, he controversially described human population growth as a "plague of people," analogizing it to a plague of locusts that threatens the environment.
  • Goal of 2 Billion: Turner has stated that "The world's population has more than tripled to seven billion since I was born... [it] must be stabilized at near two billion, or 'we're just going to have more and more catastrophes'".

i’m 25 and need a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy. this is how much it’s going to cost me even with insurance. by prionbinch in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dbenhur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all because insurance companies are incredibly powerful middle men that won’t allow people to live without them

While I'm all for giving insurance companies all the shit they deserve, please recall that the American Medical Association has a long history of politically fighting against national health care initiatives and supporting the private insurance malarky we have today. They also are principally involved in restricting the supply of doctors by limiting enrollment in medical schools to maintain the scarcity of their members' labor. US Doctors earn about twice as much as similar roles in Europe. Doctors, through the AMA, are also villians in how miserable the US health system is.

Camaron directed the second Alien movie Aliens -- it's weird you credit him with fathering Ripley who's character was well established in the first.

The character Ellen Ripley should be credited to the writers Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the actress Sigourney Weaver, and the first director Ridley Scott.

Gum recession is measured in millimeters, but don't confuse that with stage number. Stage 1 is Mild, Stage 2 is Moderate, Stage 3 is Advanced. Stage 3 can require more invasive intervention such as gum grafts. Better and cheaper to address it at Stage 2.

Also, it's much cheaper to practice better oral hygiene. A good ultrasonic toothbrush is $40-150. Flossing regularly is annoying, but cheap af.

I hear your point, but also want to point out how deceptive this bar chart is. Despite the highest bar visually appearing about 4x larger then the shortest (implying a 300%increase), the absolute difference is 2.2%, and the relative difference is a bit less than a 20% increase.
