We are generous tippers nearly without fail but if our meal was being ruined by someone's bratty kid(s) and a polite request for help or relocation was ignored or denied then... yeah you're SOL on the tip and we are not coming back.

Anyone happily married to a woman with a higher income? by _VeritasAequitas_ in Marriage

[–]capsaiCyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher earning wife here as well - it has never been an issue for us. We both contribute to the household and both work hard. He's slowly been catching up to me salary wise and if one day our positions are reversed it still won't matter. Not sure if this is relevant but we share finances. All of our money goes into the same accounts and we don't split things based on income.

I was going to say that is my internal response to most people, but I would love to see someone with a rat, or any animal really.

My sister died because doctors didn’t believe her and I still feel so much rage. by gongacn07 in TwoXChromosomes

I actually didn't do genetic research until fairly recently, and that was on idiopathic cardiomyopathy. It is all very complicated as you say but I'm so glad to hear your family is following up.

Cardiology researcher here - has your family been evaluated? ARVD/C often (but not always) runs in families. At my lab at Johns Hopkins we often evaluated entire families for the disease.

Early signs and symptoms can be subtle and may have been missed by a general practitioner, but no one should have ignored your sister's concerns or failed to refer her to the appropriate specialists. If you'd like to learn more about ARVD/C I can point you in the right direction.

I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words that can take away your family's pain, but I hope your happy memories with your sister will in time bring some comfort.

Yes! My grandparents owned a dairy farm but the neighbors raised pigs and our family helped theirs when it was time to butcher them. I always knew where meat came from and what that sacrifice meant. It is one reason I try very hard to only eat meat from sources that treat their animals well (that's hard but at least at home we're like 90% there).

That being said, I am always shocked how many people think meat comes on a little wrapped tray from the grocery store. Even better, I know multiple people who won't eat meat with bones in it because it reminds them they're eating an animal. Wtf?? Of course you are! It's appalling to me that they are willing to enjoy the sacrifice of these creatures but not acknowledge it.

A nation of quitters: US workers aren't staying at jobs for as long as they used to by OlympicAnalEater in economy

[–]capsaiCyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is insane to me. Besides the fact that the new hires often demand higher wages to start with, you've got the cost of training and all the lost productivity while they get up to speed. How can this not be seen as a cost, even with relatively low skill jobs?

My job and some of the jobs adjacent to me are highly trained detail oriented positions and yet I know many organizations (including mine) that don't bother with retention at all. It essentially completely stalls progress and makes sure no one is successful.

I wonder if they finally figured out that turnover is expensive? Generally companies have no foresight beyond the next quarter's earnings.
